      Hi Brandon! If you right click on the database, you can choose show in finder or show in explorer. If you’re not sure where to find the database in DaVinci Resolve, just click on the little home icon at the bottom right of the screen to bring up the project manager. Your database should be on the left-hand side, if not there’s a little icon on the top left of that project manager window, click that and you should see the database. Thanks for watching!

      @@moeheatproductions My two cents: The thing here is, if creating a project and saving the project is so difficult that it's not clear from the getgo and requires a RUclips video from anybody who "pretty often" gets asked the question "where are my files"... it means this is NOT a good system.

    Great video, thanks Jason, your style is very clear and helpful. I'm still not really any clearer, to be honest! Haha, I open all the folders and see weird subfolders with meaningless numbers... and no reference whatsoever to the project names I assign! I'm already imagining how much work I'll lose when I try to back this stuff up..

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад +1

      Once you get way down into the Folders, there’s usually a text file that tells you the project name. Typically you’re not gonna pick through the database to try and find things. It’s a little confusing until you dig around in there and get a good understanding of how it’s all set up and works.

When I ask to Reveal in Finder the original DB it highlights "Resolve Disk Database" in a folder called DaVinci Resolve. But when I try to find this in the location window I can't? Should I just store it in Mac HD? Sorry for all the dumb questions and Thanks for all your help!

    • @JasonYadlovski

      Hi! You can really store it anywhere on your internal drive. The default location is ok to go with or pick anywhere you'd like. You may have to use the option to 'show folder contents' to reveal the resolve disk database folder. Thanks for watching!!!

    • @JasonYadlovski

      Hi! You can open up the project manager (The little house icon at the bottom right) right click on your project and choose export project archive. That will bundle everything up that they need. When they get the file they can go into resolve, open the project manager and choose import project archive. If you only need a project file but not all of the media, etc. then you can right click on the project in the project manager and choose just export project. Hope this helps!

    One thing you may want to add here is the "Live Save" feature. It should be used in conjunction with backups. You will not have to save as many backups this way. I also recommend manually exporting a .drp file which is your project file to a location of your choice then backup those up as well. Overall, your video was very helpful and everything was explained in a clear concise way. Awesome job!

    1:14 So you say I shouldn't have the database on an external drive... but what if I'm editing on multiple machines. Would it be ok to store the database on my NAS, where I'm also storing all my files and basically do all my editing off of?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад +1

      Hi! So you can store it on an external drive, I did for a little bit however it’s recommended by BlackMagic Design that you keep it on your internal drive. After they told me that, I moved it to my internal drive and haven’t looked back. You can always just export the project file, which is a small file, and then import it in your database on your other computer. It’s really not too big a deal to do that. Remember it does not matter where you’re media lives, you can keep that on an external drive if you want. I’m not sure if you would run into problems by having a database on an external drive or not, you can try it but I would hate for something to happen your project and then it not be recoverable or something. Hope this helps a little bit, thanks for watching!

      @@JasonYadlovski Aah ok thanks for that explanation that does make sense. I'm currently trying out Resolve to see if I like it enough to make the switch from Premiere, so I'm totally used to just having separate project files. It doesn't happen very often that I need to open a project on multiple machines, but I was just wondering if it'd even be possible. But if I could just export the project file and open it on another machine, that would totally work.

    For example, the video clips in the timeline that you just put in DaVinci from a Sandisk Camera but want to delete the clips from the Sd card so you have more space to film but want to keep the footage inside DaVinci resolve like “iMovie” does without saying media offline ?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 месяца назад +1

      Davinci Resolve only references your media. The media and video files don’t actually live inside of DaVinci Resolve. So you would need to have the hard drive where your media is stored backed up Resolve only saves the project files, which includes things like the timelines what clips you put inside the project, etc. does that help clarify? Resolve does not work in the same way that iMovie does.

    Jason, do you know how to stop Resolve from generating a folder on an external RAID? I used to use a G-Speed Studio as my scratch disc but upgraded to a G-Speed Shuttle SSD RAID. I deleted the Studio drive from the Media Storage Locations in Preferences. But every time I restart Resolve after deleting the automagically generated folder on the older drive, Resolve creates a new one. It creates a “DaVinci Resolve” folder with an empty “DaVinci Resolve Cache” folder inside.

    How about the media files itself? I was looking to confirm this. Looks like Davinci Resolve accesses the media files directly from their sources, that's why when I moved the files or the disk got disconnected, the files appeared as offline. It's different from iMovie I reckon.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад +1

      Hi! Yeah the media files can live anywhere, it doesn't matter. Resolve just remembers their location and links them. It doesn't actually import any media into the project. If your files get moved you can always relink them and you should be good to go. I've got a video on that if you need help with it. You are correct, it's not like iMovie where it actually imports the media into the program. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

      Hi! I hope this is a hypothetical..🤭...DaVinci Resolve does not back up your media files. DaVinci Resolve will only backup the project files, assuming you've got the settings set to make the backups and keep them for a length of time. The default is not very long - maybe a few days, I forget off the top of my head. Resolve can also backup the Database file that contains all of the project files, but you have to do that manually.
      Do you use Time Machine or some other backup method? If you do, you should be able to grab your files from there. I've got a video on DaVinci Resolve Workflow where I talk about backup options, that may be helpful if you want to check that out: ruclips.net/video/97ixRQ6m2hI/видео.html

    I have been looking for a video that easily explains the best method to create libraries in DR and properly saving projects/files, and I gotta say you sir did a great job with this video! Super helpful... Thanks!
    If you don't mind me asking a question: I have an old laptop that comes with a 1TB-HDD internal drive, and it's filling up pretty fast, making everything super slow. So I am getting both an SSD and HDD external drives.
    Now when I start using them for accessing/ storing files..
    - Would you suggest that I create a database on my external SSD to edit of (i.e keeping all my files in it while editing)?
    - Then after I finish editing and exporting my project, how can I move my projects to my external HDD?
    - Would this help increase the speed? or should I always edit of off my laptop internal HDD and then free up the space to an external HDD?
    Sorry about the long question lol, and I hope you could help me.
    Thank you in advance!

      Hi! Awesome, thanks for checking out my video! Glad you found it helpful! You might also find this video I did about Workflow, It answers a lot of your questions: ruclips.net/video/97ixRQ6m2hI/видео.html
      Just to answer some of your question here:
      - You should always keep the Database on your INTERNAL hard drive. I've spoken with Black Magic Design about putting it on an external drive, and they recommend the using the internal drive for your database. The database is relatively small, even with lots of projects. It will run fastest on the internal drive.
      - I keep all my active media files on an SSD. When my project is complete, I just move the folder in Finder (or explorer) to a different external drive (a Drobo). Then you just open the project in Resolve again and relink the files. Then you are good to go.
      - Depending on how fast your external drive is, Resolve may run 'Faster' if the media files are on your internal drive.
      Defiantly check out my workflow video. I elaborate on these and some other things too. I think it will help you a lot and answer your questions. Feel free to ask any more questions you may have!

    the issue i am having is when I choose a file location in project settings it reverts back to the media storage setting, I am confused about this, so if i want a dedicated cache drive do i set this in media storage? even though i copy raw footage into another drive ? i.e. drive D:/ is my project files drive and drive E:/ i want to be my cache. so do i set my cache drive in media storage so its always a cache drive and nothing else?

    • @JasonYadlovski

      Hi! When you set a file path in the Preferences --> System menu, that's the default location for the cache and stills. You can override that by changing the cache/stills location in the project settings. The media for your project can live anywhere. When you bring it into Resolve, it will just remember the path to where it is on your system. Does this help at all?

    • @CreativeRamy
      @CreativeRamy 4 года назад +1

      @@JasonYadlovski ok so I can dump my raw footage on drive D:/ as example and then I can set drive E:/to be system cache. So to do so it's at preferences > system > media storage. Is this correct?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 года назад

      Yes, you can place your footage on your D:/ drive, and set the Cache to go on another drive. Yes, if you change/add a media storage location in the Preferences path you listed, it should store the files there. That path will remain the same for all projects.
      If you want to change the path for say one project, you can do that by going to File -> Project Settings -> Master Settings on the left -> Scroll down to working folders, and you can update the path there. This path is on a project level - so when you start a new project it will default to the location in the preferences. Hope this helps!

    Hey! Your video is great and informative. But you show everything inside Davinci, I mean after opening Davinci. My big problem is, that my Software won't start. So my choice would be to reinstall. But I don't want to lose hundreds, maybe thousands of (often manually) synced videos in over 20 projects. And here is the question. Will I lose all my saved projects if I reinstall, (and if I do I will also upgrade from 17 to 18 already), as I can not just simply copy project files to a backup folder. I don't know where they are to find, not like in other VE Softwares, or DAWs or anything usual.
    Do you have a tip for me? How do I copy/backup files without opening DR?

      What version are you on? PC or Mac? Maybe I can point you to the database file... Strange that it won't open. When you upgrade, it shouldn't delete or remove your existing database, Resolve should just use it and ask to upgrade it. You should also be able to back it up before Resolve upgrades it. You shouldn't loose any projects, but I can't guarantee it. . . I don't want to be the reason you loose anything. 😜

    Hello,
    so if I understand the first part correctly, the projects are store all in one default location (i.e. "the database").
    Is there any possibility to save each project to a separate folder? e.g. I want to have the project file in a folder together with the related media files. for example, I have multiple small projects organized in folders, it's almost always a video of myself talking, a screengrab of what i was doing, and a few picures /short videos to show. The are organized on my disk in folders named after the topic it covers. Can I force the Project Files from DaVinci to go to these folders as well?
    That would be much easier to navigate, I would simply open the folder, click on the project file and it would open in DaVinci...

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  2 года назад

      Unfortunately all of the projects must live in the database. You can always export the project file and then place it wherever you want if that works for you. I always keep all of my project media together in an organized folder structure like you mentioned but projects themselves must stay in the database, you can’t have them separate. It’s just not how resolve works. I do have a beginners workflow video that might help you out if you’re interested in searching for that on my channel.

What happens though to the stills and caches files (which I would like to keep in separate folders) if you have specified locations in the Master Settings? So when you set the file path in the Media Storage location (In preferences menu), that will be the default location for the still and cache files as well as the scratch disk for DaVinci Resolve. The first location that is listed will always be the default for Still and Cache files.
      In the Project settings under Master Settings/Working folder, you have the option to change one or both of those location from the default location if you choose to.

      Jason Yadlovski Thanks Jason I will give it a try and see what happens. The other question I do not know if you can answer is does Resolve need the Local Database even if you add a new one. The reason I ask this is I have disconnected all my databases except one I have created and I find it will not let me add the effects using a PostgreSQL database from fairlight as it is says that it failed to open the the database connection as it could not connect to the server running on 127.0.0.1 The effects database is the one from Fairlight and I have tried loading it using the installer with the downloaded file but this creates the effects but does not seem to add them to Resolve.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 года назад

      Hmmm, not sure what might be going on there. I'd recommend that any databases be kept on your local hard drive for best performance. I was told that is the best thing to do, directly by Black Magic Design. I would think that if you loaded the effects they should work. Assuming they aren't on one of the drives you disconnected. Strange that it won't let you reinstall them. Not sure I have any suggestions on this one. 🤔

    my cache clip folder is on my desktop. It takes up 82 GB of storage. Is it OK to just delete it all? Or else how can I navigate the folders of random numbers and letters so that I delete what should be deleted? because 82 GB is too much space for my computer.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад +1

      Hi! The easy answer is yes you can delete it. But if you have created optimized media that will be deleted too. If you are in DR 16 you can go thru the playback menu in each project and delete the both the optimized media files and the render cache files in the projects you’d like to. If you are in DR 17 you can delete the entire folder. Either way there should be a text file in that location on your desktop that should tell you which projects all those random numbers correspond to if you just want to delete specific projects cache. If DaVinci Resolve needs any of that stuff, it can always re-create it when you open a project again. Hope this helps!

    This is really helpful. I wonder if the 'Capture' folder is where all of my voice over ends up? I record this directly into an audio track in Resolve. I find this to be a confusing method of file handling. Resolve could benefit from researching how popular DAW programs handle their files. If it's possible I'd just like to specify one single project folder for each project and have everything live in that. So all optimized media, capture, cache, import and project file exists in one folder that you set up at the beginning of each project. How about a tutorial for that Jason? This would make it easier for backups as I'm constantly shuffling folders around external SDD drives.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 года назад

      Hi! Thanks for watching! You do have the ability to set where the voice over is recored and saved to. If you go to your project settings (File - Project settings or Gear icon at the bottom right of the screen). In there, look for Capture and Playback on the left, then on the right under 'Capture' you can select the 'Save Clips To' location to anywhere you want. You'll also see the default location there.
      I hear ya about keeping everything together. I think you basically need to set that file structure up for yourself since Resole does not actually import any media. It really just links to it all. Here's a video on how I set up my workflow that may be helpful: ruclips.net/video/97ixRQ6m2hI/видео.html Also if you want to use optimized media, it's all managed by Resolve, but if you want to try the new Proxy Media, it's the same thing as optimized media but can be completely managed by you. Yeah, Resolve doesn't work like that - having all files in one location. All project files live in the database/project library. You media for each project can live anywhere you'd like. The Resolve project file just links to the media. Cache files can also live anywhere you'd like. Hey! To go back up a level in your folders, look at where you see the folders listed in the project manager, I forget if it’s along the bottom of the window or the top but just click on the text of the folder name where you want to go, I don’t know why they didn’t make it more intuitive. To move projects you can copy in one folder then go to the next and paste in there and then delete the original file that you copied. It’s a little confusing they could’ve did a better job with that but that should work for you. If you still have troubles, let me know. Thanks for watching!

The app start-up project manager I still can't figure out but once working on a project and going to the project manager via the menu there I cut the stuff I wanted to move at the deeper level then closed project manager and re-opened it and pasted it back at a top level and sorted it accordingly from three. Hi Winston! Are you looking for the actual project file itself or the file that has been exported from the Deliver tab? To see where your project files live (where the database is), you'll have to open Resolve, then open the Project Manager, right click on the Database and choose 'Reveal in Finder/Explorer'. If you are looking for the file that was rendered, that would be set when you export the file. Same if you were to Export the project file, you would choose the location when exporting it. Won’t saving ‘Database’ to internal hard drive use up too much space? I only have about 60GB free on my MacBook pro, so I save everything to external hard drive. Or is the DaVinci Resolve 17 database small enough for internal drive to cope?

      Hi! The database is relatively small. For example I have a few years worth of RUclips videos along with all my other projects in one database and when I back it up it’s only 600 mb. Originally I thought like you do and I put it on external external drive. Then I spoke with blackmagicdesign and they said it should be on an internal drive for the best performance. Hi Jason, thanks for all your great videos- I really like them. Would you like to to an update on this video?
    I would like to see an overview and best practice of where to store which data, how to handle projects best, … .
    Some details:
    Basics about Projects and Databases. Where are they stored. Handling: What should be in one project and how handle after finishing (store on external drive). For example making a series of podcasts - should every podcast be in an own project?
    How to handle grafics, audios, … that are used in several projects? Having them on an external HDD and coping them always into each project again. After finishing the project and moving the closed project to an external hdd. Can these data be excluded from the project backup or will they then fill up the hdd because they are saved again and again in every project, … .
    From my site that could be a whole series about project and data organisation, how to work, export, backup projects, project specific data as well as general often (in several projects) used material.
    Would be great 🎉, thanks again, Marco

      I believe you can actually add the locations in the DaVinci Resolve preferences. This allows resolve to start with the first listed location and use that, if that location isn’t there, goes to the next listed location and uses that and so on and so on. I’m not near my computer now, but I think it’s in preferences. So you would just list your drives in the order you want resolved to use them.
      Otherwise if you did not use this message you would need to select the location each time you change the drive or it will pop up a message and say I can’t find a location.

      Was live save on? It should save every change If live save is on. 🤔

      @@JasonYadlovski you want to know the funny thing about all this.... the fact I WANT to learn more about this program to do better, lmao.
      I watched another video that didn't have live save on and I was getting the notices it was saving but in the end just got a project in red and in editing the whole video was in red too, sigh.
      SO I've decided to start fresh, once watching YOUR videos on how to save and bring the project up lol
      also it seems running an i5 8400 with a 1060, and 32gb ram MIGHT had helped with the crashing as I did have a few windows open, haha

      Keep working on your channels and posting videos. You’ll get there, you can do it. I was very skeptical when I got started too But slowly, little by little, subscribers started to come and views came too. It takes time to build momentum but if you really want it you can get there. 😁👍
