Very nice and rustic - a woodland habitat fit for our avian friends. Glad you left the top unglued and un-nailed for annual cleanout. The drainage holes are appropriate, as well. Also happy to see that you did not put a perch under the entry hole, because birds do not need a perch. Predators, however, do. Thx for your service. OId former Navy here, as well ...
These are just beautiful! I love the idea of a natural bird house. I am developing a bird watering area on our wooded property and some log homes will fit in perfectly. THANK YOU so much for sharing your process and the house/hole specifications. :)
1. Wouldn't the hollowing have been a lot easier if you had cut the log to the shorter length beforehand? 2. On the house you demonstrated making, you put the branches pointing downward. What bird is going to want that? On the other house you showed, the branches point upward. Are you testing your birds?
Great house...it looks to be the style of the chickadee... but I think they have to be 10-15 feet at least...Bluebirds use the post height but the hole has to be bigger..... reason I say this is I made one some years ago with same dimension at post height it is still empty ...Just thought I'd mention it...what kind moved in yours?

Thank you Donald for giving me many ideas of how to make birdhouses. Look forward to see the birds using the boxes. Peace my friend too. vf
