I just used one 2 months ago lol. I asked for a a "spot light" and the gaffer was like you want a source 4 leko? and I was like "anything you think that will get the job done is ok" and he said "copy" (I needed very 'sourcey' lights for a job involving dancing)
DP just needs to have a vision and know relative desired contrast ratios and focal lengths. The gaffer does the rest. One man bands need to have a hat for every occasion. So, the parameters change based on the scale of the job. Patrick has one job. You want to be a Patrick.
You are an amazing mentor. BTW: When you are talking about "pools of light" are those static pools or could wind / water create dynamic scattering effects on the pools? I'm wondering whether the famous Tyrell office shot from Blade Runner (1982) is generating these pools of light. When the gaffers and art designers were asking Ridley what was informing those scintillating pools he just said "Nothing, I just need it to generate visual interest". Are your pools of light always informed by some real cause or is it mostly to generate texture and visual interest?
DP/Gaffer here. Spot on. Speaking of spots, we still use source 4 Lekos all the time. Don't be skeptical, they are still amazing.

A video recap of all your lighting scenarios would be very cool-bar scene, office scene, etc.
And maybe some new ones we haven’t seen yet?
Buy the courses 😅
Patric in his Best shape 😂 great stuff as always 🤙🏻

Question Patrick, do you ever work with Gaffer & Gears Andrew Lock? I really appreciate both your extensive knowledge sharing capabilities. Thanks!
Do you operate whilst dping?
Considering operating the camera would most likely prevent him from enjoying his cappucino, I'm guessing no
@ no cappuccino = no set
Operating is a young man's job who still has a good back to break.
I live in NYC and my Monstera leaves are not as green as yours…what is your secret? Is this a lighting thing or did you do in post? 😉
Haha, love this. Though, you would have made more as a producer 🤪
wow all the toys are in the truck? i gotta move to australia :)
cmon source4s are great!! :D
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣besst advice everrrr
In other words, as a DP, you don't need to be a good gaffer...and a good gaffer doesn't need to be a good DP.
you get the best person in their field. a good gaffer needs to be a good gaffer
He’s a new man, folks.
