    Fantastic execution Chris. Y’know, when I make pick guards I like to take two pieces of blue masking tape and some super glue, then I tape over my eyes and my mouth and sniff the glue until I pass out. My pick guards are terrible, but I’m having the time of my life!

    my favorite part of the video is when Chris was making the duplicate template and made a point of taking his hands off the piece while the router spun down. If I keep my hands on the piece, I either move it a little bit and put it into the bit or think I can lift it off and put it into the bit. Ever happen to you Chris? :) Nice video by the way. Beautiful Daily Driver.

      Those small tele PU routes are SMALL! I’ve decided it’s worth the extra 10 seconds to let it wind down before trying to remove it, or move it to another small hole like a Strat PU route. I did not come up with this idea out of expert previous attempts. 😬🤪

    Thanks for putting this up! I've got a Silvertone Strat clone that uses a non-standard Strat pickguard. So that makes it virtually impossible to find replacements because standard Strat pickguard don't fit. They don't cover all of the routed out portion down by the jack, under the lower horn of the pickguard. So I can't just buy new ones. I actually ended up buying an entire 'nother Silvertone so I could just mod one for HSS, which I did, and keep the other SSS. So if I want new pickguards, I can, either make them myself or buy custom pg's made from a tracing of mine.

    Great video! Any tips for speeds and feeds cutting plastic on the router? I was recently trying to flush trim pickguard material to a template I made, after cutting the material down as close as possible to the template with a bandsaw. I tried high, medium, and low speeds on the router, and it would just pull the material into the bit, ripping a big chunk out. The same operations at different speeds work fine on MDF, solid wood, and ply. I ended up shaping the guard with a card scraper, but I'd like to be able to use the template I made.

    • @texastoastchris
      @texastoastchris 4 года назад

      We run the router at the same speed-full speed. Try taping the guard closer to the edge. What you experienced is kind of what I. Was trying to get across with making sure your material is well attached close to the edge. Also make sure you go the right direction. It seems more important with plastic than other materials.

  • @ResoBridge

    Kind of easy if you have a workshop full of machine tools and templates, not so great if you have to do it by hand! I have made pick guards, rough cutting them out with an Abrafile (which are no longer available) and filing, sanding and polishing by hand. It takes a while .... and forget trying to bevel them.
