Hey I keep having problems with the thumb bar, I’ve tighten the two main external screws and it kinda helps but then goes back to having the same problem again. Basically the thumb bar won’t disengage sometimes and I gotta like reel and try to lift the thumb bar up at the same time. The thumb bar doesn’t want to come up on its own after I start reeling. I haven’t found many people with this issue at all, reel is barely used because it did this out of the box and the insides look brand new. Never had issues with Shimano reels in the past and you seem like an expert and really have great detailed videos. Have you ever encountered this problem? Thanks
Sticking thumb bars and trip levers are a common problem on bait casting reels. It is usually associated with dirt or dried grease, but sometimes the cause is a bent or broken part. Hard to say what is causing your issue - Dennis
Hi Dennis how are you that's a nice reel I was looking at one the other day in a bait and tackle store thanks 🐟
I like the form factor of these reels and the dependability - Dennis
Hi there do you have a video on how to replace the worm gear and level wind on a CVL400? Thanks Phil
I don't have that video. I will see if I have one of these in the shop and will do a video if there is one around. It is not that difficult. Thanks for asking - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle thank you.
Thanks.
You're welcome
You are a very knowledgeable and skilled guy. Your video doesn’t help the viewer visualize what you are doing while talking through. It would help your viewers if you show the washers closer to the camera and change the angle of your camera so that the viewers can see past your hands and arms. I found your video helpful but I don’t think I got as much out of it than if I had been able to see better what was being done. Thank you.
Thanks for the note. I have been trying to do what you suggest. The older videos were not as clear or focused. I appreciate the concern and the suggestions - I am always trying to improve - Dennis
is the cardiff really that much better ? i fish 1-2 times a week max
They are both good reels and will meet your needs.
I need to replace the roller clutch, I believe part 2295 on my reel. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.
Yes - if the part is sold separately, you should be able to push it out through the back of the side plate.
If you have the part, just follow the steps in this video until the side plate is removed and then us a screwdriver or something else to push the clutch through. If you need the part, you can try Southwesternparts.com
I've been tapeing the line to the spool with masking tape because it kept giving me trouble.
Yes - that is an option. I will use a rubber band if I get bothered enough. Usually I just press on, but it is annoying. Thanks for the note and for watching - Dennis
What's your take on comparing a Corvalus up against a Abu Garcia ambassador round reel?
I currently have two ambassadors in the 5600 size. I have them both geared down to the 5.3:1 gear ratio. In your opinion which one would you say is better. The Shimano Corvalus, or the ambassador reels when it comes to stripers and large catfish? I'm on the west coast so our stripers don't get as big as the East Coast. But I would love to hear your opinion since you work on all these reels. Thanks
I think they are even competition. Both are well made and will last. I prefer the graphite case of the Shimano, but the Ambassadors have certainly proven themselves. I would probably go with the Corvalus if I really had to choose - Dennis
@@2ndChanceTackle well I'm already use to the ambassader reels. I've learned those reels inside and out, and how to get the most out of them. I guess I'll stay with what I'm familiar with.
Thank you for your opinion.
Not lubricated spool and other side of the reel?
I will have to look and see how I did this one - Dennis
Hey Dennis, my Corvalus has no like slippage, and the drag works fine when the reel is dry, however whenever I use it and the reel gets wet the drag just completely craps out. I’ve taken it apart and the drag washers seem okay, do you have an idea hat could be wrong?
Are you fishing with mono or braid? If it is braid, you should check for braid slip and make sure the spool has the backing to prevent the line from slipping. That is my first suggestion - Dennis
2 years late to the show, I used my Corvalus for the first time yesterday and I was sure the drag was screwed, I took it apart and cleaned the drag washer, no difference, then I read this post and sceptical as I was, I took the braid off and put it on with a dab of super glue at the spool and it worked out great, after 50+ years of fishing I had never experienced this problem, lesson learned.
Do you think that this reel would pair good with an 11ft salmon float rod or should I go smaller on the reel?
Yes - I should pair well - Best wishes - Dennis
What's your opinion on Penn reels like the USA jigmaster 500. Is it worth getting a more expensive brand like Shimano or Diawa? I am thinking of getting 2 after market aluminum frames from Tiburon for my jigmasters. However if the be actual guys are not that good, it may not be worth it. I'm from the west coast and out hear our big fish are yellowtail and yellow fin tuna. I don't see alot of guys using 500's out here.
I would not go the JigMaster with upgrade route. You can do reel with a Shimano Tekota or Torium or the Daiwa Sealine or Seagate. These will give you more performance and what you are looking for at a price comparable to the Tiburon upgrade. If you like Penn - The Penn Squall or Fathom would be in that price range.
People still use jigmasters and Newell reels over here (San Diego) but it is mostly older people and the occasional person new to fishing with a limited budget. Nothing wrong with the classic reels but the money you will spend upgrading them can put you around or over the price of a modern reel. The older reels are easier to service at home tho and proven reliable. Get a 30 size conventional reel or if you don't want to lay line down mainly a 400 sized baitcaster (Lexa, kumodo, tranx) and you can handle anything from half day to 1 day boats. You can fish #20 - #30 pound lines for live bait and bump up to #40 for throwing iron jigs.
Most west coast fisherman have at least one rod/reel combo in the following categories. #15, #20-30, #40, #50-60. Guys going down to baja go even higher.
If you are just starting stick to a #25 for live bait and maybe a rod for throwing 3-4oz lures.
Dennis recommendtion of the Penn fathom is a great place to start. The size 15 holds plenty of braid for party boat fishing and has a magnetic cast control and great free spool. Very lightweight and sensitive when matched with a modern fiberglass and graphite blended rod.
Does this have auto engage and does it have a baitclicker???
My brother gave me this reel but I don’t know why it will let line loose. The drag on it is good and it reels line in good just the switch to let go of line is working good I need help
I'm not sure what you are asking. Is the switch not working? Are the drags not holding? I will try to help but I need a little more information.
Please send me a note to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com and I will try. If you can attach a short video that shows the problem, that would help further. Thank you
Dennis
Hi i have the same reel I did the same process beacuse my had little noise when I use throw it but it still make the noise u think it bearings
Yes - it is most likely that your bearings will need to be replaced - Dennis
Do u think it the SPOOL SHAFT BEARING (0.65G)
That does sound like a bearing noise. I think it would be best to replace both - Dennis
My free spool button isn't working. What can I do to fix it?
That is usually the result of dried grease. Take the side plate off and spray the area with a penetrating oil like WD40 and work the release in an out a few times to see if it makes a difference
@@2ndChanceTackle thank you much. I'll do it as soon as I get home. I'll let you know if that's the problem and that is again!
Got it fixed. Turned out the little lever slipped off the button due to the finger screws being loose. Got if fixed up. Thank you again for the quick response.
for pike ? casting lures up to 90 grams around 3oz ?
Yes, you can use these for Pike. Thanks for watching - Dennis
