      Did you end up with a 1st gen sequoia? I'm try to decide between the 1st and 2nd Gen sequoia because of 4.7 vs 5.7 v8 for towing 4000 pound camper. More power is better, but if 4.7 can more than handle it, I'll pay the lower price tag

    i bought my mom an 04 Toyota and can agree with the chalky white paint. I will add that I had to fix the traction light coming on and off.. it was due to a wire that was shorting out on the PRNDL shifter. just re-terminated and problem was good to go.

      Owned a 2001 tundra and traded in for an 06 double cab almost 13 years ago. Mine is natural white which is a single stage, no clear coat paint. Apparently all their natural colors were done single stage. After she became chalky I had it repainted 2 years ago with a healthy clear coat. Looks brand new. I've had to replace inner/outer tie rods, radiator cap, normal wear and tear. That's it. I did have the dealer do my timing chain and associated water pump, etc at the prescribed interval. In the next year I plan on changing all AC components myself, proactively changing the alternator, and keeping an eye on the secondary air injection system. Keeping her a while longer.

    I have an 03 Sequoia with 270k. I've had to replace the front sway bar end links twice and the rear door handle once. I have rust on the rear wheel wells and a broken radio antenna. Also, some of the radio lights don't work. And my driver door rattles on windy days or when going over a bump. A shop is now fabricating new replacement parts. Other than that, my Sequoia has been trouble free since I purchased it in July 2003.

    ‘07 Sequoia. First issue was rear door handle breaking, and replacing the cable. $50 for parts and a couple hours labor. Did the cheater wire like the video for emergency opening. Next issue was that primary air pump thing that makes it Cali compliant....the fan blades are plastic and they disintegrated. I put a bypass on it, cost $100ish, annoying fan whine gone. Axle warped at 130k, had to replace it along with Ujoints. Need to replace shocks and struts. Radiator split at 140k, replaced it. It’s been a pretty reliable ride all these years and overall maintenance costs are good. It was my wife’s primary vehicle for a few years, then mine for a few years, and now my college age son is driving it. We plan on driving it for awhile longer.

    Glad I found this! I was just doing research on these, I want to buy a larger SUV to turn into a camping rig/DD. Seeing yours with almost 400k on it is a good testament to the longevity! The other vehicle I'm considering is a Tahoe/Yukon of the same year, but I think the Yota has a better look and interior (though I really love the GM V8's). Obviously the 4.7 lasts a long time, but I really hate that it has a timing belt.

    Well. Just had to scrap my 2001 Sequoia. So sad to see her go. 225K. Too bad, she still runs like a top. Bought new in Nov 2000. She has been a great vehicle. I was one of the very first frames to have been replaced by Toyota. Fought to get it done in 2013. The rust has just become too much. Rear end had to replace the diff cover which is actually sealed. You can purchase a steel cover and weld it after cutting off the rusted one. Also had issues with tailgate window rails rotting out and handle replacment. The rear emergency brakes needed to be replace. The ends were rotted out. Could not repair cost effectively. Drivers side manifold needs to be replaced. Then mech calls and says bad news. Oil pan is rotted and leaking. Checked it out and it is so rusted cannot even epoxy it. Too much to pull the motor to replace it. Living in high salt new england did its number on it. I towed a boat every summer for the last 15 years with it. Never had a problem. Good news is that I found a 2006 and it just had the frame replaced and control arms in OCT 2018. She is in great shape. Hardly any rust underneath. Body excellent. Just going to have them replace the water pump and timing belt as part of the deal. Out with the real old and in with the less old. Cannot wait to pick it up.

    '02 SR5, ~245k, daily drive, 10 years in salt/snow (Ohio) and 5 years in desert heat (Las Vegas), bought for cheap when it was 4 years old. First, we are SUPER hard on cars, I replace ceramic breaks almost yearly on our cars. I agree with tie rods, antenna, back window, and power steering issues. I have replaced all myself with little issue. I just bought the shocks, struts, and ball joints for their first replacement. It is worth the couple of extra bucks to get Moog parts that last compared to the cheaper options. I am also doing the timing belt and alternator for maybe the the first time(I can't remember for sure) in the fall when it cools down. Otherwise, this car is insanely reliable and worth the price. So much so, that my in-laws just bought an '08 based on seeing how little issues we have. No paint or rust issues. I would recommend the headlight restore kits for under $10 and some elbow grease instead of replacing them. My horn did go out, which I replaced, but it seems to be a wiring/contact issue somewhere. That is the first thing I am tackling.
    Seriously, totally worth the price with little maintenance. As it stands today, I don't think I will ever buy a non-Toyota/Lexus based on how reliable they have been compared to my other cars.

    • @farmsgrace341
      @farmsgrace341 6 лет назад

      00101010111001101100 check to see if you are getting any contact on the horn switch behind the airbag. I have had this problem on a few older toyotas and Lexus. There is a thin ribbon in a rotating assembly that connects all the features of the steering wheel(horn, control buttons and airbag signal and power) to the rest of the vehicle. The ribbon moves around in the rotating assembly every time you move the steering wheel, which is a lot, so they eventually wear and break. When this happens your airbag light might come on too. It's not too hRd to replace though. Just got to pull the steering wheel .

      "02 SR5 w/260k, in 4wd every day where I live on top of a small "mountain" in WA state. Normal annual maintenance costs of around $500, and it runs like crazy. This rig is just totally reliable with no issues. Will be putting the Nokian studded Hakeppellitta 9's on this winter, because the dirt/rock/gravel "road" up to our place can get very icy and it's already really steep and twisty.

      Buy OEM for ball joints only. Ball joints are the most common catastrophic failure on first gen Tundras and Sequoias, and probably half of them are due to using MOOG replacements that are very poorly made. The other half is probably a total lack of maintenance/replacement.
      Toyota corrected their original issue with ball joints, and OEM replacement really is the only proven safe option (outside of upper control arm replacements with uniballs instead of ball joints).

    Bought 2001 V8 4 wheel drive Sequoia (195K miles) in April 2018. I LOVE this vehicle. I did break off the inside door handle on drivers side, so for now I roll down window to use the outdoor handle. Well, today I was idling in fast food drive through line for awhile and when I finally got on the road again I noticed a noise coming from my car when I would step on the gas pedal. I kept trying to confirm it was from my vehicle (getting 3 kids to be quiet). When I realized it was and stopped a feet hundred feet at the next stop sign, I saw white smoke coming from under the hood. I immediately pulled over. It is a hot texas day now (105 heat index). Waiting to have it towed now. Maybe radiator? The dashboard temp gauge never lit up though? Smell associated with smoke resembled a burning smell :( I hope my baby will be repairable. :(

    01 toyota Sequoia with 300k on it. replaced the trans on it, keeping it maintained. need to do an oil change soon. back hatch handle broke, window does not roll down because i installed a system in and it broke the window off the tracks and caused a loud rattle in my hatch that wont go away. relay and motor works in the door, you can hear it. but nothing happens. 3rd alternator so far. i need to upgrade the alt to a higher amprage and do a big 3 on it so it lessens the possibility of it going out. my drivers door has trouble closing. 02 sensors go out alot as well. normally 1 and 2. 3 and 4 seem to be still holding up well. evap sensor goes bad or needs to be cleaned alot. another problem is with the 01-02 Sequoias, the trac control and vsc trac with engage by itself and will not allow you to use the breaks and it could/will drag you to any part of the road. it will lock the steering too. so it could get scary. but if you take out the relay itll be good. i get 6-9mpg with the heavy weight in the back. when the 02 sensors go bad i get around 4-5mpg. when bad 02 sensors, oil change needed and air filter need to be cleaned, as well as the mass air flow sensor, mpg can decrease dramatically. no one believes when i say i dont get the rating from the car used. (12-16mpg) until they ride with me and watch the sensor counts the numbers down 1 mile every 2-3 minutes. and then theyre thankful their car gets at least 18mpg. but i love this truck. its a very reliable truck. built very well, structurally. if this truck ever gives out on me, you best believe im going to build it back up and drive it until it fails again. this truck isnt going anywhere.

  • @anotherflyer
    @anotherflyer 6 лет назад +2

    I recently installed my 4th tailgate release handle, and in the process, learned something important. Yes, the handle does fail, but it actually due to the faulty catch at the bottom. The catch is metal, but encapsulated in plastic, causing it to bind as it wears through. When it gets too bad, it puts excessive strain on the handle (at the other end of the cable). Replace the latch mechanism and keep it clean...you probably won't have to touch it again for 10 years. Also, consider replacing the rear window scraper seal and you will keep out the dirt and water that cause all the problems in the first place.

    • @bgtoups

      Yes, i have also had this same problem, and replacing the lock itself solved my problem, and will keep the handle latch good for a long time.

    I replaced my timing belt about a year ago on a 2007 sequoia 2WD at 89000 miles. I did not replace the camshaft seals or my crankshaft seal. Fast forward a year later and my passenger camshaft seal is leaking. Does this require the disassembly of the camshaft to get to it? I know on the 2001-2004 it’s simple to change out the camshaft seal but on 2005-2006 the camshaft has to be removed because of the VVT? Is there a work around? I was quoted $1500 to replace the camshaft seal by a mechanic? Ouch!

    Great video! Just bought one here in Lockport, IL a limited edition with 173k on it. Got some rust due to the Midwest though. Just like your video, door latch broke off so I ordered the replacement cord and a metal handle; Antenna won't go all the way up; and its currently in the shop for sway bar links, control arm and ball joints. Next step is to replace #3 and #4 02 sensors and get a new muffler because its growling! (LOL!) ALSO...checked online with Toyota for recalls and found one for the passenger side airbag. Getting that replaced Saturday. Other than that, its rides strong and I'm very pleased.

    As I was fixing my newly replaced metal rear hatch handle, I did something that I think will forever fix that metal handle.
    Since they just twist and bend down, and the main contact on inside of handle has an upside down V..
    I took needle nose pliers and bent it back to like new, then here's the key. I took a nice nail. A hammer. A pc of wood, and a cutting disc sitting by me.. so I tapped the nail with wood to give it about 3 small bends and a twist. Went under upsidedown V, upward, inward, over spring, then to the home stretch under (or may have had to go over.. doubt it though). About 5 zip tiies cut off clean. Hit the head n tip with cutting disc to fit perfectly, so it wont snag on door body.
    That thing will never break haha!!
    And honestly. It took like 10 minutes. Takes 20 to get it in n out of hatch lol. If you know how. Got it all back together before n been like "Damnit!! I forgot the Phillip's screws on the inside of outer panel." Lol

    I bought a 2006 Toyota Tundra DLB TRD Sr5 4x4 back in May of 2006 with 4miles on it. It's absolutely the best truck I've ever own...I Have 158,600 miles on it and all I've ever done to it other than the required maintenance is change the clip on the driver side rear for the emergency brake and the bushings on the front tie rod along with tires of course. I have used it to haul/tow just about everything there is and it also get used in the winter to plow snow. The only issue I have with it is, with the 4.7 L engine while towing it lacks power going up steep hills. I can't tell you how many time I towed other vehicles out when they get stuck - everything from cars to tractor trailers. I just put it in 4 WL, put the shifter in 2nd gear and use the L shift button. This button locks it in 1st gear and occasionally I might have to put chains on. This is NO BS. Oh did I mention that I live in the Mountains of Western Montana. I Love this Truck and will keep it until it dies but I think it will outlast me. Oh, I backed into a tree the other day while hunting so I have a dent in my rear bumper but other than that it's still in great shape. I've always had a Ford or Chevy before but I'll never hesitate to buy another Toyota if that time comes. Thanks, Nathan for letting me tell my story. Art

    Great video. I would add definitely do the lower ball joints if you haven't got them done under the recall. Also the steering rack bushings should be done in the high mileage rigs. When they get sloppy they can cause the steering rack to fatigue and crack. If you replace the lower ball joints or steering rack use ONLY OEM parts for those. A little more expensive but 10x the quality of Chinesium auto parts store ones. Another thing to watch for is the clutch fan gets brittle as is ages. When it explodes it can take out the radiator. But man with minimal maintenance these things are insanely durable.

    So I have a question I just bought a 2002 Sequoia and it has 251k and the transmission fluid looks brown so I was planning on changing it but someone else told me that if it’s brown with that many miles chances are the transmission may be worn and changing the fluid could expedite the transmission going out so they recommended that I leave it alone and not change it. What do you recommend? Is what they said true? Should I change it or just leave it alone? It shifts fine.
