I think that in Mario kart, bagging is good and fun if it is in proportion (so slowing down to be just behind the pack but not half a lap) and if it brings consistent but not overwhelming results (6th for an average player with average luck)

also Troy, for clarity, the bagging nerf only applies on the 3rd item or after, so the 1st and second item will be proper power items for your position, but if you were to get a 3rd item from the same set within a certain time or backing up you'll get the bananas and green shells (or other non power items). so first 2 items will always be safe when attempting to bag but any after that will be useless.
I think its the perfect change.. they haven't killed bagging at all, but it does mean you must keep moving forwards at all times. Makes it less farcial and a little less overpowered as you cant just cycle items until you have a shock.
@JT29501 it's a good change but you can still get 3 or 4 power items if your willing to wait extra long (about 5-7 seconds)

I’m kind of glad bagging was nerfed. In Mario kart 8, it already sucks enough 2nd place can pull lots of reds and power items if 1st is front running, but when it becomes a strat for every race, it becomes annoying.
The nerf doesn’t change the fact that 2nd place can keep pulling reds tho
Bagging was never a "strat for every race" there were a ton of tracks where bagging wasn't viable, and while on some tracks bagging was strong you still needed to play smart and get good rng.

The game has 96 courses and only a few of them have bagging as a great strategy.
At first I did not think the change would actually affect bagging but since the update I've actually been getting firsts from front running, staying in the middle and just playing normally by using items smartly and doing good lines in tracks that were bagging tracks in the past. Pretty happy about it
The fact that this happens for any box that you hit more than once is astounding. Like, it makes the game much more varied, with you being unable to take the same Double Item boxes multiple times, but still.

The nerf to bagging was probably for the better, but I'll miss moments on cheese land when you bill extend and carry a shock into first. I'm sure the community will find a way around the change anyways, the community is awesome ( apart from when they back spam you lol)

9:09 that happen to me in the first race online and lost horribly , however the second time this track showed up i got first place. Sometimes the items that the players get in the back compared with yours can really screw you up.

Absolutely, the Boo ruins my races all the times and just sucks now. It appears way too often in MK8.
I wish it stole your second instead of the current item. having a defense stolen right before a red shell, or mushrooms stolen right before you take a short cut is way too unfair and not fun at all

I am surprised they didn’t nerfed bagging years prior. In a racing game players should always be moving forward. Staying back hoping sting items can make them win instead of just driving shouldn’t be a thing

I would go as far to say thar power items becoming way stronger was a pretty obvious side effect
Bagging just meant you had to be a better runner if you want to win + know which tracks you truly should just bag. Majority of the time though running is the better strategy and even when it isn’t you can sometimes be such a good runner you’ll win anyway. It added diversity in playstyles and players with truly strong lines weren’t effected by it, they def shouldn’t have removed it imo
I respect the argument that it added playstytle diversity. However I still stand my previous argument which is that in a racing game you shouldn’t intimately stop and stay in the back to hope to get carry by items(even if it takes skill to do so). You should always be driving forward.
@@dh3913I don’t care how strong your lines are, if you’re frontrunning cheese land and somebody dodges a shock with a bullet last lap and has a good item in the back you just aren’t winning. And that wasn’t an uncommon occurrence on cheese land considering how frequent bagging was on it, usually at least one person would get a good setup and dodge the shock. Bagging wasn’t good on every stage but was TOO strong on some stages, so definitely deserved a nerf. (Which is what it got. It wasn’t removed, you can still do it, just with restrictions that make it more difficult and less powerful)
@@JacobPDeIiNoNi From experience I don’t think dodging shock with a bill was really THAT common, but even if it is fine. Like 2-3 tracks where bagging is the definitive strat. Out of 96 tracks in the game I’d say that it was actually a nice change of pace.

I'm not really a huge fan of changes that try to prevent people from playing the game how they like, but I can also appreciate that feeling like bagging is required to win on certain tracks ruined those courses for some (Cheese Land being infamous for it).
Troy I firmly believe in your quest to make Funky work, it's just gonna take some time getting used to his stats. If you find it hard to get mini turbos on certain corners, it never hurts to counter hop before a drift so you can charge the mini turbo faster.
Definitely gotta remember to do the counter hops more now
Im 50/50 on the bagging change. I like that they nerfed it. It was kind of bad for the game, but i did like how it diversified the way people played instead of just constantly trying to front run. It also had to make you more knowledgeable about which tracks would benefit from each play style. It also is an unintentional nerf to heavy weights since they benefited the best from bagging. But overall i would say its an alright change even though im kinda disappointed about it. I do feel like people overvalued its usefulness though.

@@Lord_of_eels It's not just a racing game, it's a kart racer. If you only want to frontrun, why not just go play forza or something? Having these items that let you make big comebacks from behind is part of what separates this from a racing sim.

4:01 to clarify, on major ramps in this game, there are more animations for the characters, on ramps like GBA MC, Wii RR, Wild Woods, etc

I want to see an FFA with all the wii tracks in the game! They've remade so many of the same tracks now
Bagging seems to not be completely dead yet, but it's a lot more difficult. You can only get one good item at each set. This means that if you purposefully slow down before the next set, you can still get a good item. You have to be lucky though, because you only have one shot.
Edit: You can actually get two good items at each set (I was thinking of double boxes as one item for some reason), so technically you can get a good item by taking one single box and then backing up and getting another single box.
I'm so glad they essentially patched out bagging. It's fun for true competitive play like clan wars where you're trying to strategize but for just playing online with strangers, it's no fun to see a bunch of people fishing for an item to win the race. It's not really a race anymore at that point! I'm curious, are you planning on doing a wii tournament in 8 deluxe? Like where you only play tracks from wii?
Something that would be cool to see in a future video would be you taking one of the guess the tracks based off music or mini maps. My buddies and I used to do them all the time, curious to see if you'd get 100%. Loving the content.
It's a small thing, but you don't gotta fast-forward little parts like you did at the end of the Maple Treeway. It's slightly immersion breaking, and even if nothing crazy happens or you don't talk, I really just enjoy watching you play!

Kidding aside, I think Peachette has an UNDENIABLY cute design. I honestly love it, but I hate the reason for its existence. Why on earth make Toadette look like Peach? It's unnatural and unoriginal. It was an excuse to shove Peach's game mechanics into NSMBUD; a way of letting you play Peach while denying you from playing Peach. I hate it! XD
Nintendo wanted to have their cake and eat it too!

I love how there was a little moment where Troy was nearly sold on Peachette but the final race was epic amazing Funky Goodness. Nice job, Troy!
Also, it seems that the unique tricks are more easily accessible with the "side trick" on not small ramps or half pipes. I was able to get the Pauline singing, Funky Kong wave ride & Ice Cream Mii Ice cream swing when doing a "side trick" on Squeaky Clean Sprint's half pipe toward the end and on one of the top parts of the SNES Bowser's Castle. Try it out, I guess...

It's ridiculous that competitive play is just item bagging and who ever smuggles thier items unto first is guaranteed victory
i honestly think this nerf is just perfect, you'll never see people staying in the same box again, now bagging is more involving and a little more challenging, so i think this was the perfect way to nerf it without completely removing it or affecting the game too much.

The bagging nerf is a huge W

In MK8 all characters have 3 trick animations, each unique for karts and bikes/ATVs. They have two normal trick animations that get cycled and one animation exclusive to Anti-Gravity boost ramps (so long as you don't input a front or back flip). The only characters who have the same exact animations for all vehicles are Bowser Jr., Dry Bones, and King Boo.
I am kind of satisfied that begging is removed since it actually makes it less of a hassle online and may actually be more fair to players this time around.
There’s 3 trick animations for each character. The new mii suits change one trick animation. And one trick animation is changed when you use either a kart or bike, regardless of character choice.

"I just pray that they nerf the red shells in the next Mario Kart game" that one hit right home for me, Red shells are just too darn common, and its especially scary how often 2nd place gets a triple red and a regular red, and it hurts even more when 1st place are pretty much guaranteed to get a coin, which makes it very hard to front run in this game.
and what hurt even more is the double item boxes, while it always guarantee 1st 1 protective item, it also means that 2nd might get 4 reds.
i would much rather prefer that they buffed the drop chance for blue shells for any placement, but HARD nerfed the drop rate for red shells for any placement above 4 - 5th place, because nothing feels worse that being 1st the entire race, and then you get comboed/Mario karted all the way down to 8 - 12 place.
42:04 So the way the new bagging thing works is, you can stop at a single box twice (so you could get a box and wait till you get the next box), however, you can't use your first box item and get a really good third box item. After two boxes you will get something really bad. So yes, you can still pull the shock/bullet while bagging you just can't bag for more than 2 item boxes at once if that makes sense.

Fun fact about tricks in 8: there’s 2 kinds of tricks poses, big and small. For example, Mario has 2 small trick poses and 1 big trick pose while driving a kart (which I believe to be the standard amount). When tricking on what the game considers a small trick jump, he will only do one of his two small trick poses. On a big jump, if the last pose he did wasn’t his big trick pose, he will do his big pose. Also, if you spin your vehicle left or right while doing a big pose, your character will pose independently from the vehicle/not spin with the vehicle.
I hate bagging. It defeats the point of racing if staying behind grants you buffs so powerful you end up overtake someone who’s actually racing normally in a racing game

I remember watching the “world championships” that N puts on, when the announcers explained what bagging was it sounded like a exploit or even devious way to play the game which I hypothesize sounded off brand to N so maybe that was a cause
Hey! Wanted to say, that every character has 3 animations per vehicle type (3 car and 3 bike/atv). You will switch between the first 2 animations (the simpler/shorter of the 3) when activating tricks. The only way to access your third “special” animation, is with very specific trick ramps. Smaller ramps and normal ramps will just switch between the 2 other ones. The glider ramps, will only pick your shortest/least dynamic animation of the 2, to accommodate the glider. Hope this helps explain the confusion you had with Funky Kong’s trick animations!
About the truck animations:
Each driver has 6 trick animations, 3 for kart, 3 for bike
You can preform 2 of the 3 trick animations while NOT in anti gravity
While the 3rd one can only be preformed in anti gravity

It's been a couple days now since the release of wave 6 and it still feels unreal to see Funky Kong in 8DX
I think the worst thing the changes to bagging will do is actually limit the combos that are viable for online and competitive play. The heavy characters with higher top speeds are viable because bagging exists and when you use the power items you will go faster than someone using Yoshi or a baby character, so before you could still do well on a below average combo but not really anymore. Also if you get comboed just after an item set and are decently far behind you race is practically ruined because you can’t just back up to get an item to catch back up, you will need to go all the way to the next item set for the power items.
Personally I didn’t really mind bagging, but it was only on a handful of tracks and I don’t know how well the new tracks would have been for bagging, maybe DK Jungle to get through the hairpins quicker but the tracks aren’t really that off-road heavy which is when bagging helps a lot.

While I was learning the courses in Grand Prix mode, I was figuring out if you could still do the DK Mountain cut, and I learned that the best(/only?) way to do it on inward drift is the "2008 strat" you used in the All Boost Panels FlounderFest, going up the bank and hard drifting into the cut. Actually managed to pull it off once on 50cc. Figuring out how to/if you could do all the Wii tricks still was probably my favorite part of the DLC, not certain why.

I'm fine with the new bagging changes. Even as far back as to playing competitively back in the MKDS days, I never really bag myself that often and always preferred just going as fast as I can. I'm actually quite surprised that Nintendo addressed this in this update and I'm also interested to see how they handle balancing in a potential future Mario Kart game too.
The bagging change is excellent. It also means this rule will likely flow over into the next MK. Can't complain.

i absolutely love that they changed bagging. it means people actually have to be able to drive the courses now to be good at the game. i havent played online yet but i just know its gonna be such a better experience

I raced in worldwide lobbies today and I found that the item change didn't just prevent bagging, it also changed what items you get in the lower ranks. I was in all positions for a little while and I found that the best items come from 7th-9th place. When I was in 10th-12th place, I only got mushrooms. Singular and Triple's. I got shells, bananas, and bombs in 4th-6th, and mostly mushrooms along with coins in 1st-3rd. Not sure if that's everyone, but that was my experience today.

I liked bagging, as it gave the game more depth than just straight front running, as that can get stale, so I did like bagging, but I agree that it needed to be nerfed

Troy I played this wave with my family today, first time playing it! But I had one huge issue! So at one point I felt really dumb as I followed an arrow on Rome and it ran me straight into a wall, like, the arrow points right or something but it ran me straight into a wall! I felt kinda stupid wondering if I did something wrong, but then a few seconds later my mum, at the exact same arrow, followed it and ran into the same wall at the same spot I did! I dunno if we both are stupid, but considering it led both of us into a wall, that does seem like bad design! Otherwise yeah, love the invincibility frames, and the item box respawns are great!
Bagging is still possible. A lot of new bagging techs have already been discovered.

Even though I did bag from time to time, it's much better for the game to nerf it. I feel like races will be more enjoyable now.
Also there are two different trick animations for tricking normally, and two for tricking with a speed boost. So funky Kong riding the wave IS a bike animation
The surfing animation only occasionally plays when tricking in zero gravity. Most characters have an exclusive zero grav trick.

I think it might be a good shake up to the competitive scene, especially relating to how now some teams won't be able to rely on shocks as much, any other form of bagging can still be done with pretty easy workarounds, it's just that cicling through items for shock is not as reliable anymore.
Also I have to say the toxicity coming from casual players on twitter yesterday was actually insane, had to make a video about it and everything.

That big shortcut with halfpipe is oretty nice, but you can do it without touching the Halfpipe as well
I’m only at the beginning of the video, but if you still don’t know, you can only get the third trick animation while in anti-gravity. This works with both bikes and karts.

I’ve heard that Funky Kong’s riding-the-wave animation only plays if antigravity is active.
Falling before a blue is worth it on some tracks, just need to test out which ones it works on, that rainbow road track has a very far respawn trigger.
MK8D finally feels complete. Funky Kong has returned, classic tracks were wonderfully revamped, and bagging got a much needed nerf. All we need from nintendo is to fix the issues with item/server lag. really happy overall.
I th8nk it can be argued using the worse combo could actually be detrimental. The timing of inputs would be very different, so if you’re trying to do things like how you’ve been used to it won’t work out

Bagging is still viable, just don't sit at the item boxes, ive been just hopping around untill im in last then go for a double box but apparently you can get bills frequently in 6th-7th so getting a bill is rare with that stratergy

On dk mountain, i think there should be a item set on the track in between gap jump. Makes an option to take the track path if you need items.
I like the bagging nerf because before the update it seemed like Mario Kart was a racing game in the same way McDonalds is a burger business.
bagging is one of the strategies that probably gived more mixed feelings in the community, but also a mechanic that did mk8d more unique in playstyle more than its other predecessors. It opened a way for unusual builds like heavys and an unconventional method of playstyle more base of map knoledge than the other "viable" strategy that was just the default going forward. I think nintendo is trying to get rid of bagging to try to get players to play more aggressively, but consequently they have just made the gameflow much more linear, and what I personally consider a painful loss. I may be exaggerating, but this is why I see only top tiers of top tiers in the future of online thriving in both casual and competitive.

you can still get a star or bullet bill in 2nd place with 12 players online. it also depends how far the player was. i was in 2nd place for 2 laps and the person was very far. so when i was on final lap and the person in 1st place was like way in the front. when i got a double item. i got a star and bullet bill in 2nd place but it still was not enough to catch up to him.
Sounds to me like they basically patched out hard bagging (i.e. sitting at a box) entirely but you're still allowed to soft bag (holding back in the race to get better items but still actually racing). I think this is a good thing overall, even though it's obvious Nintendo only actually did it because "dAt'S nOt HoW yOu PlAy ThE gAmE".
Ok so hear me out:
They nerfed bagging by making it so you get worse items if you grab the boxes while stopped/slow or driving in reverse, and if you grab the same boxes.
So theoretically, you could wait about five seconds behind a set of boxes, wait until you're in a good spot for items, accelerate to top speed, swerve to hit two boxes (if there's no double box) and still get good items, under the condition that you can't reroll.
Bagging may still exist, just in a more balanced state.
