"Ripple in still waters, when there is no pebble tossed, nor wind to blow." The whole song is like a Zen koan; only gets better with age and a little wisdom.

I played a recorded version of Ripple from a Dead CD at my little brother's funeral over the sound system in the church. Johnny was not a huge fan of the Dead, but with this beautiful song, I could see there was not a dry eye in congregation. He was a church pastor, called to Glory way too early, and had a lot of friends. I doubt I'll ever have as many friends as my younger brother.

I had this played at my best friends memorial, at his request, in the middle of the ocean as we spread his ashes in the water. We had talked about it since we were teenagers, following the band up and down the East Coast in the 80's, early 90's, so I knew this is what he wanted.❤ It's an absolutely beautiful song...and a beautiful way to say goodbye or "see ya later"...
And i think many Deadheads probably use Ripple in the same way...what a gift and a Blessing...
    Thank you, Jerry & Hunter❤😇✌️

I saw him with the JGB band about that time. His bass player OD'd after the tour. He closed that show, it was in the Rochester War Memorial in NY, with "What A wonderful World." I was truly moved. I recognized a liberty in playing in this band and his solos that was different than his playing with the G.D.
I came away thinking I liked his playing with this band as much if not more than with the GD.
He gave his soul to us in his music for safe keeping and to share.

    • @pinkpriss

I've always planned to have the tune (along with P.H.'s Lighter Shade of Pale and a few select others) starting at 4:20 PM on 4/20/20XX, to be blasting out at heaven's shattering Richter Scale 7.77 inducing volume, from four Sikorsky Raiders (each with two massive speaker rigs) Cris-crossing high enough above to deafeningly rock the world of everyone on the ground below from Palo Alto to Half Moon Bay to San Rafael to Sausalito while my surviving dear ones hand scatter my ashes on SF Bay from a party catamaran then scatter a trail of seeds culled from Thailand to Tibet and Santa Cruz to the Oregon border, from the boat dock to the memorial party restaurant... I guess I should probably start thinking about opening a go-fund-me type account maybe...

I"m convinced this was written as a prayer.
I read somewhere that JG didn't love playing it live most of the time -- felt it was too sacred to be performed loosely.
If that's not true, I'd rather not be disillusioned.
It's so amazing to be able to listen in on their work-in-progress chatter; "genius at work," literally.
Mr Angus, I can't thank you enough for promoting it here.

    Ripple...
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
    It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
    Perhaps they're better left unsung.
    I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.
    Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
    Nor wind to blow.
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.
There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.
    Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
    Nor wind to blow.
You, who choose to lead, must follow
But if you fall you fall alone.
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.
    La dee da da da,
    La da da da da,
Da da da, da da, da da da da da
    La da da da,
    La da da, da da,
    La da da da,
    La da, da da.

The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues
Fourteen years ago, I began writing The Encyclopedia Of Jerry Garcia Music Venues. It's the only book that combines all of Jerry's side band dates and the Grateful Dead's dates together by venue.
Alphabetically by state, there are over 1300 venues that include rehearsal, recording, performance, living spaces and planned/canceled show venues.
The history of each venue is here including architects, builders, owners, opening night performances and other notable appearances, murals, statues, stage prosceniums, backstage areas, pipe organs, secret rooms, hidden tunnels, restorations and demolitions.
Jerry's history at each venue includes the bands he played with, setlists, opening acts and other information giving the reader an idea of what went down at every date on every tour. In many cases via dated photos, what guitar Jerry was playing, and other anecdotal stuff that we love to read. I've added eyewitness reports to as many specific dates as possible. These are numerous, hysterical and heartwarming.
Thus far I‘ve collected over 1120 hi res venue photos approved by over 900 photographers. I've utilized college and public library special collections, historical societies, museums, Flickr and others. There aren't any Jerry photos, I have photos of the venues themselves to highlight where he played. Jerry owned over 130 musical instruments in his lifetime, giving away most of them. It's all chronicled in a 300 page section called Jerry's Musical Instruments.
Envision a two volume, 2400 page set protected in a slipcase, similar to an old bible. This is a book that resembles the records kept for medieval pilgrimages to holy sites. People will want to know centuries from now where it all took place...so there ya go!
On June 3rd the Kickstarter campaign launches with a cool little video starring me, and Jerry! That's where you can get the pre-purchase discount. I need your help to reach my goal in order to print this fantastic book. If I’m successful the book will be printed and ready in March 2024.

  • @BlackAngelRocks
    @BlackAngelRocks 9 лет назад +26

I'm not a Deadhead, but Jerry Garcia is definitely a "great souled one" as they say about Gandhi. If anyone thinks white people don't have "soul in their music" as do Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles and many other, have a listen to this hippie out of the San Francisco Bay Area. He just screams "guru".....

    • @WolffBachner
      @WolffBachner 9 лет назад +4

Black Angel And the fact that Jerry just wanted to play music and never wanted to be a guru helped kill him.

    • @BlackAngelRocks
      @BlackAngelRocks 9 лет назад +8

Wolff Bachner If you listen to any interviews with Jerry Garcia......he sounds like a guru. He was brilliant, kind, was a great story teller and had a wonderful philosophy......peace, love and the brotherhood of man. He was also extremely funny. When he talks about the Grateful Dead, Neal Cassidy, Ken Kesey, Palo Alto and San Francisco in the 1950s and 1960's, he speaks of such things as playing music for one minute at the Acid Tests and then quitting because the band was so high. At the very least, I would say that Jerry Garcia was interested in sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll.....

The jewery of Grisman puts Jerry in an awkward place. From David's opening bs of "mandolin plays percussion" to his attempt to dominate what should be a quietly building backing fill that turned into a an attempt to lead and dominate which made Jerry smile as he was thrown off by it. #shouldve been Grisman not Garcia
