As I was watching this, our Cricklewood Green CD switched on the rotation - !! WOW! Anyway, my husband and I are huge fans of yours and TYA--and have been for 50 years. I just recently acquired a bass and I'm starting to get the feel of it by playing along to some tunes by Deep Purple and Bad Company - and of course, TYA. However, even the speed you played at is way beyond my comprehension. At this stage, your talent is just something to admire and possibly aspire to. Thank you so much, Leo for doing this on YT. You're very special to many of us fans. 🤩💥😎🌟👍💫🎸💙😉
Hi Leo, I'm 20 and from Kent. I find it extraordinary that you have all this material on RUclips you have produced yourself! I have been playing guitar for nearly a year and I am thinking about getting into bass guitar as there are too many guitarists in my band. Your bass playing on Ten Years After records is so so good. Very inspiring. All the best, Harvey. P.S. "I'm going home" is a personal favourite, live in Germany.
Hi Harvey Glad you enjoyed my videos. I started playing bass myself many years ago because we had too many guitarist in my band. I loved the bass and have never looked back. All the very best to you with your own musical journey. Regards Leo
Thank you sir. It is such a treat to hear your stories. I have been playing 45 years and still have so much to learn. I love listening to gentlemen like yourself, and your experiences. And like I mentioned before, you were the main reason that I started playing the bass. Thank you so much, and I look forward to more videos.
Hi Leo! I’ve been playing bass for about two years now- since my fourteenth birthday when I got my squire. You’re SUCH an inspiration and I wanted to say thank you for all the effort and hard work you’ve put into for the sake of great music and bass playing. I love playing bass and hearing you play yours always makes me wanna keep going and going
"Let the song tell you what to play, then be yourself" Perfect summary to which I can only add "If you don't feel it, don't play it", legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson's timeless advice.
TYA was my favorite band in High School in 1984, lol. Undead I still hold in High regard. Show us a little demonstration of the great stuff you played on I May Be Wrong. So good to see you Mr. Lyons!! Bill from North Hollywood CA
Leo, thank you so much for posting these. I've loved you, your music and Ten Years After since getting my first TYA album Watt. Thanks for so much great music Leo!!
Thank you so much, Mr. Lyons. Such great insight. I'm 69 years old and took up the bass on a whim 2 years ago. Learning pretty much on my own with online courses. You're playing has always inspired me and now your words inspire me even more. Thank you again, sir.

Great video! I started learning bass a couple of years ago and started out reading music straight away (realised it's importance). I've since played at many jam sessions and played with a jazz orchestra for a few months before the pandemic hit.
Hi Leo, so cool to hear your stories. Could you please explain your sense of groove, being in the pocket, playing laid back yet in an exciting way ? ....the Holy Grail of bass
Three cords and the truth 👌 billy bluff is my new favorite technique haha you've lead a fascinating life, I'm very jealous of your era 😁 thanks for the advice and tips again, but most of all your outlook, knowledge and showing us a bit of SOUL 🤘😉 thank you so much, so interesting and insightful. I'm gonna go for it cheif. "With a bit of help from my friends" 😁 Kind regards AJ
Hi Leo! Could you tell or explain a bit how you approach the bass on the solo for Good Morning Little School Girl? Thanks for sharing your time this videos are amazing and inspiring. Greetings from Chile
Leo, I am a guitar player, I started, as a young lad, in about 1976, with blues/rock but now play funk with a jazz feel. Regardless of being a guitarist, I love rhythm sections, yourself and Ric, Garibaldi and Prestia, Jaco and Pete Erskine. Who are the players who have influenced your playing?
Hi Duncan. So many players have given me inspiration. I think starting out . Bill Black, Ray Brown, Scott La Faro, and just about every record I listened too.
Leo, What kind of music do you like to listen to nowadays? I find myself listening to the music I grew up with mostly from back in the 60's. I guess I'm just stuck in my ways. I always enjoyed the way you played bass with TYA.
LEO, Happy New Year! I understand you are now based in the Principality. As an ex cub with back home your Auntie Nora being Arkala. I am also resident in the Bannau Brechiniog. Are you anywhere near? Best wishes Richard Hughes. UP the Stags!!
Hi again Leo...Im just wondering, what kind of person were you in the late 60's compared to now in 2024? Are you living in Tennessee now? ATE lol. I have a plate for a traler, my dad's, and it says "GAS". hehe . Have you seen that young girl, ELlen Plays Bass" on RUclips? She started out by using Youician and then another video lesson app, probably her dad too. Im thinking of trying it one day!
I think I'm the same person but I hope I've learned to be a better person as i've got older. I lived in Nashville for 16 years but now am back in the UK. I checked out the Elenplaysbass site. It's very interesting and she's a good player. It will be interesting to see how she develops as she gets older. Regards Leo
Thanks for the video. I agree, just go for it. We land on our heads a few times but we only need to land on our feet once!
I agree entirely.
