    Diesel no Trailer: 19.5 mpg
    Diesel w/ 7000lbs: 10.7 mpg
    Gas no Trailer: 17mpg
    Gas w/ 7000lbs 9.5 mpg
    F150 3.5L Ecoboost w/ 7000lbs 8.5mpg

      Good call xXBurntBaconXx: It's pretty obvious isn't it? Hell, even all emissioned up, it's still the DIESEL for the WIN! Figure out how to bypass all that emissions crap, that they keep slapping on modern diesels, and you'll pickup more fuel economy and performance from that diesel. It's been proven time and time again over the years.

      Factor in the huge price premium over the gas engine. Then factor in all the repair bills when that diesel gets some miles and the egr coolers fail. When the diesel particulate filter fails, when the scr system fails. You will be money ahead buying the gas engine by far. And the gas engine is faster up the IKE!

      Diesel engines usually get bad fuel economy when new, they're not fully broke in till about 70,000 miles. I would expect if they ran the same test a year or two later the diesel would pickup at least a couple of MPG.

      Inferno Beast I heard this mentioned when I bought my Harley. Lol. I saw no difference when paying for the up front cost vs when selling that thing on the back side. The higher resale didn’t out weigh the up front cost.

    This is the informative testing that we all need! Real world, everyday driven testing is the only comparative way to know what is available in the truck market. Would be curious to know what the test numbers would be for all makes of trucks across the board. I believe most of us would gain insight into what MPG we would actually get with this kind of testing. In this economy, where every penny counts, we need this information to make an informative and subjective decision. Great job guys and keep up the outstanding work you do for us all!

    TFL, You guys are doing a great job, and I really value these reviews for my future purchasing decisions. Thank You so much for your time and effort.
    Here is how you could do even better.
    1. Note, the mileage of the vehicles that you are testing. Its something we should know.
    2. Validate with the company there is no detuned system to aid break in.
    3. At the beginning and/or end of the video, provide a quick list of applicable options and specs like weight, off road packages, axle ratios etc... That way I don't have to scroll through the video if I forgot something
    PS...if you are talking Diesel vs Gas savings, its best to consider resale value into the equation and it would not hurt to remind people of the big picture for their big decisions. Truck buyers who plan to trade in down the road account for the higher value, (usually at least the cost of the diesel option) of their diesel trucks. Since New vs Resale is the highest cost of a vehicle for the majority of drivers, I believe its at least worth noting now and again.
    Additionally, you did not factor DPF into the equation for your diesel mileage. You never do....

    Diesel vs Gas discussion, the diesel engine will be worth much more when you go to trade in or sell the truck so you do not need to save the $5k in fuel alone. It is true they cost more to maintain so it really boils down to do you like to drive torque or horsepower? I personally love to run diesel engines, low rpm stump pulling power and better economy in all situations.... Nice job guys.

    The V8 gas Titan XD got 1.1 mpg better than the previous test with the 2016 F150 3.5L Ecoboost towing the same trailer (9.6 mpg Titan vs the 8.5 mpg F150). Kinda surprising given how much heavier the Titan XD is compared to that F150. Those turbos were working hard.

      @@silvermanrol definitely 2021 XD pro4x. It is smoother, has more payload because gas engine is lighter. I drive it everyday. Diesel shifted hard (normal) and during regen it smelled like diesel. I hated taking it to short trips because i knew i would get there before it warms up and would clog the filter or not finish regen. Just too much worries with diesels. I know some people remove the emissions but it wasnt for me. Both tow well.

      The EcoBoost they tested was the heaviest version available with 22" wheels, i.e. not representative of what an XLT would do. Most people have an XLT or Lariat, not the Limited.

    • @arbiter1
      @arbiter1 8 лет назад

      Most other trucks they test are the heaviest or their lineup so saying is not a good representative is kinda wrong. Turbo needs to be under under load to produce the boost the engine needs to make its power which means it needs to run more throttle then a naturally aspirated truck.

    • @noblekitty
      @noblekitty 8 лет назад

      It doesn't have to run more throttle or anything. If you look at all the truck towing comparisons, the ecoboost engine always operate at the lower RPM vs other N/A v8s. How's that equate to more throttle? The boost from the turbo allows the engine to get more oxygen. More oxygen leads to more fuel can be injected each stroke. which leads to more torque per stroke. More torque means less RPM to produce the same amount of horsepower vs less torque engine which needs higher RPM. However, less RPM =/= less fuel consumption. It takes horsepower to perform certain task of work. And it takes X amount of fuel to produce X amount of Horsepower. Most gasoline engines nowadays are very similar in efficiency as in the amount of kinetic energy they can extract from fuel, which is about 30-35%. There are many other factors which will affect MPG, beside the engine alone.
      Have they considered the wind speed and direction on the route? or the time it takes each truck to reach 70 mph? accelerate faster costs more energy. Wind drags costs energy, quite a bit in fact.
      After all, the point of making the ecoboost F150 is for 90% of consumers who rarely tow with their trucks. For those rare instance of towing, do you think they would die over a 1 mpg differences (if that's even true, since TFLTruck didn't measure the wind speed and direction on different test days). When they are not towing, the ecoboost 4x4 F150 is rated for 22 mpg vs the 4x4 XD Titan 18 mpg highway. If you plan to tow everyday, you already made a mistake buying a gasoline powered pickup, let alone deciding between the ecoboost or N/A V8s.

  • @douglas685
    @douglas685 4 года назад

    Wow. The V8 did great. I'm really starting to like the idea of a Titan V8 XD. You can find the base S crew cabs with 4x4 in the low 30's, that's pretty good value and that V8 isn't extremely thirsty despite being such a big truck. No nonsense truck plus Japanese reliability without crazy pricing.. the base interior is pretty nice too. Add some aftermarket heated leather seats and it's possible to get quite a nice HD truck for mid 30k's

  • @marcotony15
    @marcotony15 7 лет назад

    What are the full specs again for both. Is the diesel 4x4? I don't know if the 4x4 would be any different on the mileage
    Would the 4x4 take a lot of maintenance?

  • @davva360
    @davva360 8 лет назад +20

    I am not anti diesel, i own a diesel RAM 2500 and a gas F250 and I have said this for years. Diesels only make sense if you do a lot of miles. The up front cost difference is a lot to make up when you are only looking at about 10% better mpg.
    If you tow a lot, and I mean almost every day and plan to put a lot of miles on it , the diesel may be a better bet, but if you do not, gas is the way to go.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 8 лет назад

      And or or? Tow and miles or tow or miles. I run massive distances but almost never tow great weight.

    • @davva360
      @davva360 8 лет назад +3

      In my area you would never make up the cost with miles because while diesel gets about 10% better mpg the fuel costs about 10% more so it is a wash.
      I know it is not the same everywhere though so in some places you can make up the initial cost in mpg, as long as you do a lot of miles.

    • @unknownunknowns
      @unknownunknowns 7 лет назад

      davva360 But what about maintenance since diesels are generally lower?

    • @Chuckers84
      @Chuckers84 7 лет назад +2

      Stefan Unson still wouldn't make up for it gasoline engines have come along way and there is very little maintenance involved when maintain properly plus diesel maintenance is quite a bit more expensive. The amount of oil used in the diesels is significantly more and the filters are expensive to say the least

    • @davva360
      @davva360 7 лет назад +2

      I don't agree diesels are cheaper to maintain at all. Oil changes for example. If you go by recommended intervals the diesel will go further between changes but the oil change will cost at least twice as much as it uses twice as much oil. Diesels now also require DEF and usually a fuel filter change at every oil change. My gas truck is $30 per oil change every 7500 miles. My diesel is $90 to do an oil change every 15000 miles (recommended, i never go over 10k).

    Wind resistance makes a big deal towing. I tow my 26' travel trailer, usually at 62-63 MPH. If I get a wind-less day I get 11 - 11.25 mpg. If I get a average headwind I get middle 10's. A strong headwind anywhere from 8 - 10 mpg. Best I ever got with a nice tailwind was 13 mpg. RV trailer is 10' 7' tall with a slight rack( rake?) and weighs 6000lbs. I usually can keep it in overdrive (6th) at 1750 rpm's on the flat. Gas mileage will improve about a 1/2 mpg on secondary roads where the speeds are 50 - 55 mph. Towing with a 5.7 L Tundra (2014). My last RV trailer was the same brand, one foot shorter length and 8" shorter height and I got on average one mpg better. Without towing I get 20-21 mpg highway and 15-16 city. The only issue with the Tundra I'm limited to 9900lbs. towing capacity.

    From a titan diesel driver when i use cruise control i get 18mpg but when i change over to manual and keep my foot lightly on pedal i get 22mpg on highway at 70 mph. And on streets i get 18mpg by keeping the foot light and im not crawling either i keep a constant speed of 40-42mph on the streets. Cruise control robs you of mpg because the system pushes the break on the downhill instead of taking advantage of the acceleration

    The reason for that 5000 dollar premium for the diesel is because of how easy it will tow the weight. Even though the diesel tow only 1000 pounds more the way it does it is way more confident. The truck is limited by the chassis and other things rather than the power of the engine.if you plan on towing the diesel will make it so much easier while returning better mpg and longer longevity.

  • @NavySturmGewehr

    The premium of diesel over gasoline engine costs isn't as much of a factor if you intend to trade the truck in later in its life. Diesels command a better resale value.

    • @larry8065
      @larry8065 8 лет назад +5

      And why do they command better resale value? Because morons are willing to pay way more for something they THINK is way better....even though this video just proves that notion isn't really true.

    • @joenissan
      @joenissan 8 лет назад +6

      Lmao!!! Really? Did we forget that you ALREADY PAID THE EXTRA 5g FOR THE DIESEL?! You'll never get that back and with on a mile or two per gallon difference, you'll be paying MUCH more in the long run since diesel is more expensive at the pump. C'mon people, it's easy math. Unless you feel more manly with an engine that sounds like it's got marbles in it, it makes no sense.

    • @joenissan
      @joenissan 8 лет назад

      +carbonking53 Longevity has been a non issue ever since gas V8s have been easily going over 200k miles. Unless you're an over the road trucker who needs to last a million miles, most don't keep vehicles that long anyhow. As for quieter towing, lol.....not sure what you've been towing with, but even with higher gas engine RPMs during hill climbs, the diesel is still louder, although they've gotten better. Like I said, especially for this class, diesel makes sense only to those who feel they get an extra "man card" by driving one, and are bad at math.

    • @joenissan
      @joenissan 8 лет назад +1

      +john roark you've apparently not seen any of the reviews. Quite the contrary in fact. The gasser feels far more spry, even while towing the gauntlet . The diesel tows 1000 lbs more while the gasser has a 550 lbs payload advantage.

    • @joenissan
      @joenissan 8 лет назад

      The gauntlet test was the same exact 10k weight. My point isn't necessarily a gas vs diesel in general, but this particular truck/engine combo. I've been towing for well over 30 years and I agree, in general diesels are the heavy haulers. But it this case, Nissans Endurance handles just fine and in this case, maybe better.

When I first bought it i was only getting around 16 mpg. after about 20,000 miles i was getting high 18's to 19 mpg. at 90,000 miles it gets between 21 and 22 mpg not towing. I have heard others having the same experience with their diesels. This is at between 3,000 and 4,000 feet elevation.

    • @dylanmacaya9166
      @dylanmacaya9166 5 лет назад

      They definitely need extra time (read mileage) to break in well and loosen up to achieve their maximum best fuel mileage. I think the XD Cummins in this test only has about 8000 miles on it. It will continue to do considerably better MPG numbers as is it doubles, triples, and quadruples its mileage. Both in laden and unladen tests.

      Note they had different transmission and rear end ratios. That can make a huge difference. But their speed also tends to equalize things because the aerodynamic drag becomes a greater factor when you up the speed.

    • @douglas685
      @douglas685 4 года назад

      It's probably because the 5.6l V8 is tuned for at least decent mpg since it's also used in the regular truck (which is EPA rated) and the diesel is a cummins which isn't. Cummins and Nissan were probably "eh" on mpg tuning for it, and more tuned it for power and usability

  • @chrisbaker2903
    @chrisbaker2903 6 лет назад +1

    Where that 1 mpg difference comes into play is really in range per tank. If you've got 35 gallons that's 30 extra miles you can go without worry. You still might run out of fuel or not if you tend to push the limits. I have to say though that you drive to fast. Yes I know what the speed limits are but towing is better done slower. Plus you need a much longer loop and you need some hills thrown in there. I have a 2001 Dodge 3500, 5.9 Cummins inline 6, 6 speed manual transmission, 3.73 gears, dually extended cab. I towed a 30' toyhauler about 8,000 lbs 4900 miles and averaged 12.5 mpg driving between 55 and 60 mph the entire distance. Oddly enough, I got exactly the same mileage towing the same trailer on the same loop with a 94 ford 7.3 Powerstroke with 5 speed manual, crew cab F350, 4.10 gears same speeds. I've tested my Dodge at different speeds. Driving unladen at 75 I got 16.7, at 70 = 17, 65=19.5, 55 = 22.5 and 45=27. You just can't get around the barn door aerodynamic drag factor. Those tests except for the last one were on a loop from the Antelope Valley in CA to the Northwest corner of Arizona and back. I did the 45 mph test around Lancaster, Rosamond, Mojave etc driving exactly as I normally would except for the top speed. Man was it boring.

    The rpms aren't going to change because the torque converter is locked. Doesn't matter what you are pulling, if you are in top gear at 70mph, the rpm will not change unless the torque converter unlocks or thw transmission downshifts.

    Looks like there's a good reason Ram passed on that 5.0 Cummins when they were offered it. That mileage difference is so small it make no sense. Hopefully the tuners will be able to wake up that motor, I'm sure it has a hell of a lot more in it. You could get a 3/4 ton diesel and get better mileage, better towing, and better resale for around the same market purchase price. Or if you're not towing as much get the Ram 1500 diesel and get 28mpg unloaded and 14-15mpg towing 7k.

    @TFL.. thanks guys. After 4 years, this is your first, sensible "test". The diesel achieves about 10% better economy than gas, for both conditions. Within the Nissan brand, the diesel math is simply equal to gas math, when ALL factors are considered: costs for fuel, maintenance, purchase, etc. The old argument that diesel outlasts gas is no longer relevant to this specific comparison, because the modern materials will likely ensure the gas and diesel variants will achieve equal lifespans [assuming both are not driven to extremes]. Where the diesel is supposed to excel is in the engine braking, but the diesel Titan has not this feature, and thus the advantage is lost. However, when comparing the Titan diesel to other brands, in fact a Silverado 2500 SRW Diesel achieves the same economy under same conditions, yet has much more capacity and the engine braking, for about the same price as the Titan. Thus the Titan remains imho over priced for its capabilities. Your tests for Titan and Silverado prove this assertion. IF Nissan were to install a proper engine brake on the diesel, my opinion may change: but minus this feature, the Nissan is simply not worthwhile for serious trucking.

      update.
      A/ Per all TFL vids:
      1/The data seems to show: a/ the ecobust gets about 8.5 mpg; b/ all V8s across all brands are averaging about 9.5 mpg; c/ the Titan XD Cummins Diesel averages about 10.5 mpg. Thus, all are highly comparable for mpg. The best for mpg is the Ram ecodiesel, but this is for very much less towing weight.
      2/ The XD does have more towing capability overall than all other brands for 150/1500 segment: about 30% more.
      3/ the XD is well appointed, quiet, smooth.
      B/ Per my dealer visits recently, the delivered price of the XD is about $8k less than MSRP; one was about $10k lower. If this pricing holds, then the XD is in fact priced competitively for the 150/1500 segment, and becomes far more attractive to me. The XD price is at the segment top, but it has the Cummins and Aisin, which are not cheap, and both cannot be questioned for reliability and strength, and both give the XD extra capability. The price premium is starting to look acceptable.
      C/ No dealer will yet allow me to test drive an XD with a 9k# trailer. But all dealers tell me the Cummins and Aisin work together to provide engine braking. I cannot find any info about this from Cummins or Aisin, or any web forums, so cannot confirm. But no 150/1500 truck has effective engine braking, so the XD is average or above for this. Still, I do wish Cummins or Nissan would install a proper exhaust brake: a 5L motor should be very capable to tolerate this.
      D/ conclusion: the XD at $8k lower is now a serious option for towing a 9k# trailer weekly.

For the long run, you can't beat Cummins. You don't even have to worry about them till after 300k miles. My comments are pointless in this case because I would never own a Nissan anyway. Just my 2 cents.

    Gentlemen could you please elaborate on why your numbers for the Nissan Titan Diesel Ike Gauntlet runs are so different. You did it once with the yellow one towing a 11,000 lb goose trailer and then did it again with the blue one towing a 7,000 lb box trailer when comparing it to the gas version. and the numbers didn't quite make sense to me. The Yellow towing 11,000 I think did it in like 8 something and the blue one towing 7,000 did it in 10 something. Is it due to the wind resistance on the box trailer even though its 4,000 less in weight? Reason I'm really curious is because I was very surprised to see the smaller trailer get less mpg and a slower time. If you could shed some light that would be great thanks. As a diesel fan I'm scratching my head as to why the Diesel got beat by the gas truck as well. Does that 7th speed in the gas truck really make that much difference or maybe your blue diesel has some issues considering that the yellow one pulled 11,000 lbs up the Ike almost 2 seconds faster with better mpg?

    • @duncdunc76
      @duncdunc76 7 лет назад

      My bad I miss heard the trailer weights I thought the box trailer was loaded with 7000 for Ike but it was 10000 something. Much closer to the goose trailers 11000 and I suppose with wind resistance it would make them pretty equal if not make the box trailer harder to tow depending on wind conditions. So wild that the gas truck bests the Diesel in power as it seams.

    I would get the gas you do take a hit on mpg but you gain 500pounds of payload which is alot. You would be able to have a 1800pound truck camper and all of the cargo that you want and still be under the limit not to mention diesel is more expensive you need to get det every once in while and its harder to find along with the $4000 premium

    • @rkalla
      @rkalla 8 лет назад

      You're thinking is definitely on the right track - my understanding is the high-torque diesel engines shine so well at highway speeds partly because they can cruise at super low RPMs and still pull as hard as they need to. That's why I was a little surprised by the 2k RPM on the diesel in this comparison. I've watched more Ram 1500 Ecodiesel review's than I care to admit and I feel like most of the highway MPG tests (which push near 30mpg without towing) are sitting around 12-1300 RPM.
      Just surprised overall at how "meh" the Cummings was in this application. Expected it to either get really solid MPG unladen OR almost identical MPG while towing (because it's relatively unbothered by the weight) and neither of those happened... it got right near gas MPG in both cases.
      Weird... or it's more likely I have no idea what I'm talking about and missing the point of the Cummings 5.0L :)

    • @crazyhass84
      @crazyhass84 8 лет назад

      +Riyad Kalla agreed. remember the ram eco diesel has a 8speed trans which is why its at 1500rpm at 70mph vs the 5.0l cummins with a 6speed behind it.
      at 7k the eco diesel is the choice. at 12k towing the 5.0l cummins might be the choice. but only if it gets better mpg than a ram 2500 with the 6.7l cummins (i doubt it will).

    I think Nissan has a bit of a problem here, based on these results. I'm really surprised this diesel is not performing better on MPG than this, and it puts credence behind the rumors that FCA rejected this engine because it wasn't up to snuff. Maybe I'm crazy but it seems like the Big 3 diesels - in 2500 guise - would be in the teens on MPG on this same MPG loop. Even the Colorado/Canyon Duramax, which could probably tow this load, might get better mileage on this loop. And I know some EcoDiesel owners will say theirs could do better, even if it has less power.
    The Super Ike will have to suss out just how much the diesel helps in this truck over the gas, towing the same load. But based on this, I think I'd get the gas V8 all day long and save the money. on the engine upgrade and the variability in fuel price.

    another topic...fuel. IF consumers increase demand for diesel trucks, obviously more diesel fuel will be consumed [duh]. What the average Joe forgets is this: every barrel of crude oil yields about 25% diesel and 50% gasoline. Thus, more diesel demanded will have 2 consequences. The price of diesel will rise, due to scarcity. The price of gas will decrease, due to over supply. For every gallon of diesel produced, along with it must be 2 gallons of gasoline. Food for thought ?

    Milage varies by driving habits, foot in the floorboard on a diesel will not translate into better fuel mileage than a closely rated gas engine model.
    Nissan now running TV ads in my area of Texas featuring the Titan Cummins Diesel, it will be most interesting to see sales figures at the end of the year..
    My neighbor has a Titan 1/2 ton that is about 3 years old, likes it, & gets slightly better fuel milage with a lockable bed cover, I figure the better fuel mileage attributed to less drag caused by wind turbulence in bed of pickup, caused by tailgate.. (don't know what engine he has, assume a V-6 or V-8..)
