This video just fixed my mower sir. I have that engine on a Snapper. VERY difficult to start last summer Removed the valve cover today and the intake rocker is very loose. Headed out to adjust them now. Thank you. Great video.
Glad I came across this while researching hoping to see that I was right in determining which valve was which. I think I was told I was wrong. Just trying to confirm I got it right. Mower runs good. I set one at 5 thousandths, the other at 6. I have to back to try to get the intake where it will stay adjusted. Should I set both of these at 5 thousandths like you did that one? 104M02-0223-F1

Tha is for this video. I HV one that i mest with and didn't understand how to set it back. Now I HV a idea of how to do it. Just got into the small engine thing. Luving it. Fix's about five in my first two day.
I’ve shown a few of the carb cleans on these machines, but yet to show a valve adjustment. Hopefully this helps someone, and glad I got to the bottom of the no start condition. Thanks for stopping by as always 🙏😎
Nice how to video Alex. Alot of mowers get tossed because of that valve issue. That mower is ready for sale. Your probably cutting grass already. Our grass is starting to green up but we had about 1/2 inch of snow 2 days ago. 👍🇺🇸🎥Roger
I’m guilty of overlooking the valves on these motors a lot. I’m glad I caught it though and it’s ready to be sold. I’ve got a toro revival video coming soon thanks to someone awesome. Yes I’ve already been cutting this season, but I hope it stays warm your way soon. Thank you as always.
Very clear instruction and understandable. My timemaster Toro has problems starting and bogs down easily. Not sure if it is this issue or head gasket or both.
Great tips as always . I got one I think I need to do check the valves on here soon as it has some chatter on startup . Congratulations on 300 subs 🔧👍🤘
I overlook these a lot. Hopefully it’s an easy fix on the one you have with a little chatter. Thanks you as always for stopping by John. I really appreciate it 🙏
I have the Troy built 240 and it just quit running after I cleaned the carburetor and flushed the gas tank then I opened the valve cover and walla, lose rocker arms and a quick adjustment and now it's running smooth. Thanks for the help.
Same problem you showed. I've adjusted the valve's before. But when I check by rotating the engine (mtd yard machine e300 125cc b n s) the rocker arm come loose again, won't stay adjusted. Found a small pice of metal (spring pice). Rods are not bent and feel no resistance rotating the engine. Going to check how the valve's feel next and check guides also. Wonder if there might be some internal issue also? Had this mower over 10yr. And I change the oil.
How's she goin'? Nice repair Alex. That was a good find to check those valves. Man that intake was some loose eh!! All fixed up now and ready to go mow!!! Take care!!!
Hey hey!! Hope all is well your way. Thank you for stopping by. Yes I’m glad I found the valves to be way out of spec and give me a chance to make a video. It’s running great now and ready to mow some grass.
I’ve got a 7hp Briggs on a Toro, I’ve cleaned, fixed, and adjusted everything but this so far. It’s a hard start condition. A couple pulls on the rope, or cranking forever with the electric start, it doesn’t start like it should. I’m going to tart his next, thanks,
Great video. The valve over on my 11yr old 550EX is stuck. I tapped on it and even tried to grab in with large channel lock pliers, and it would not budge. How can I remove it ?
Du you have a video on setzing the fuel needle right - on an older (i.e. 1990s) Briggs & Stratton push mower motor (those that have only one ! governor spring)?
Alex, have you ever had a cam lobe move on one of these engines? My daughter hit a stump and now it won’t do anything. Flywheel key is fine. When I picked up the mower it doesn’t pull through like the compression release is working. Been waiting on a new cam from Jacks for about a month now.
I finally figured out that this is what was going on with the little Murray mower I am working on. It will sputter and backfire a little every once in a while, but it won't do much of anything. I cleaned the carb twice, drained the tank, and replaced the fuel line. It didn't make any difference.
You set the exhaust to the same clearance as the intake? Shouldn't there be a .002-.004 difference? My motorcycle set at Intake .004-.006 exhaust .006-.008.
I know I am old fashioned but I like the flat heads better they rarely had problems unless they got burned or a seat came loose, but these over head valves seem to need adjusting a lot,, I am gonna have to to that to my Hustler mower with a Kohler engine, the engine starts but it tries to kick back some before it starts, I am guessing the valves are out of adjustment.
I agree. I had much less issues on most flatheads, besides the valve seats coming loose like you said. Seems to be a common trend to over complicate everything. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to check them on your kohler. Hopefully that does the trick.
Thought I had already posted this. Glad I came across this. I been trying to confirm which valve is which. I adjust them on one for a friend and chose the top as exhaust like the one you show at 3.34. I was thinking someone told me it was not but mower ran good for the minute or so I ran it. Now I need to make sure the intake ( bottom) one stays where I put it. Motor- 104M02-0223-F1 Craftsman M-230 163 CC I did not adjust them the same as you. I adjusted these at 4 and 6 thousandths. Should I adjust them the same as you did that one, both at 5 thousandths??

Thanks John. It’s easy to get scared by this face. I do the same every time I look in the mirror 😂. I was glad I figured this one out. Other than valves it most likely would have just been a worn out engine.
I'm having possibly the same problem intake valve is a little loose went through the carburetor cleaned in numerous times it'll fire up if you hit it with starting fluid and that's it fresh gas and everything could this be the one problem problem

How do you find a engine serial number? I keep trying to use Pro Chaser to buy carbs for my power equipment which is all Troy Bilt. But I always get sorry we can't help you. ..I use the model numbers like 11a-542q711.
There should be stickers on the side of the plastic cover on the engine or on the side of the engine block. Sometimes they want model and serial number to get an exact match.
Thank you. Yes it could very well be a lack of torque or maybe lock tight. This one did have a bent blade on it when I got it and I think they let it vibrate for a long time. I greatly appreciate you stopping by.
