No one is better than Fed. His reflexes and touch are absolutely amazing. The tremendous pace in the modern game coupled with the slowness of the courts makes it's much harder to volley now than the past and that's really why the serve and volley game has died. That's what made Fed so remarkable is that he still could still play the net even though the net game is severely handicapped.
@twinwankel the speed difference would be a good argument if Federer was an actual S&Ver and utilized volleying as a primary strategy instead of the occasional one. It's still impressive and he was good at it, but you're delusional if you think he was a better volleyer than Edberg, McEnroe, Rafter, etc. Those guys lived and died by their volleys, that was their bread and butter. Then again, I always see you going on about Fed so I can't wait to hear your next argument about how he actually had a more effective serve than Isner and Karlovic too.
Jack Sock was a terrific net player but much of his doubles success came from the difficulty of volleying against his massive top spin forehand; he usually stayed back on his serve.
Nadal is really underrated on his volleys because people just have an image of him grinding around balls and hitting loopy forehands. Tsitsipas also has great hands, much better than Dimitrov or Evans imo.
Great video, guys. Showing my age here, but the best natural volleyer I've ever seen is John McEnroe. After him, Edberg and Sampras stand out for me. And, of course, in the women's game, Navratilova.
Interesting to think of great volleyers today-ignoring the old guys (who are just all really solid), some great volleyers from singles are Alcaraz, Dan Evans, Hurcatz, and Struff. Makes sense for the big servers to be great and most the Brits are super solid at the net (must be a thing they actually work on). As for Alcaraz, he's got that Spaniard gene Nadal has. Just brutally efficient net play and not a lot of flair. (Of course, all the top doubles specialists today are amazing, but that hardly counts.)
Really? you don't think any of this is taught? This is a bit over restrictive because this is more a 'push-volley' technique he uses. Learning to work across the ball better with the lower edge near the throat would really open up your volley skills. But YES, Nadal is a very underrated volley'r....Great hands and better technique than we saw here by far.
one of the biggest problems with British tennis are these god awful carpet courts we have to play on! they encourage absolutely zero rallying skills. brits produce some of the best volleyers, slice backhands, chip chargers lol in the game....shame they can't play on real courts.

Federer is my go to great volleyer as well as Stefan Edberg. Honorary mention Pete Sampras

What I loved about Fed was his ability to completely change his game once Nadal won Wimbledon.. insane volley, insane player! 🫶🏼
