Maybe it's an age thing, i'm about to turn 39, but I see Tropic Thunder as a timeless comedy. Now that I think about it really I've seen lots of reaction videos on YT of younger people seeing it for the first time and cracking the f up all the way through. There aren't a ton of comedies from that time that I think will stand the test of time but this is totally one of them
Believe me, there aren’t very many black people that are or were upset about Robert Downey Jr. doing Black Face in this movie. Look up interviews of black comedians talking about this movie. Everyone loves his character in the movie and it was done with taste. It was a commentary on white-washing and everyone understood it. Edit: I am a 30yr old Black man btw
Jack black is a national treasure. Also, comedy isn’t meant to be taken so seriously but I think this movie was a perfect comedy movie especially for the time. Don’t get movies like this any more, hilarious😂
This was not before Iron Man. Iron Man came out 6 months before this and RDJ was a big star again by the time Tropic Thunder came out so it was an even bigger deal that he played this character.
The Tobey McGuire movie you were thinking of is “Brothers” about him going to war, and his wife thinks he died until he reemerges tears later and his brother (Jake Gyllenhal) is the new dad to his kid and thats why he was on the brink of sanity
its really sad how we cant even talk about a movie these days without fear of being demonetized and deplatformed. As always thanks for the video. Here's to one day being able to return to the normalcy which was once the discussion of media without unnecessary eggshells to walk over.
I loved this movie, and I think the humor still can hold up, but it seems that TikTok brain won out today haha. There is definitely a message to this movie, but that’s okay.
The more I watch this video the more disappointed I am that you didn’t get the massage or just ignored the message and satire of the film. Everything isn’t for everyone and that’s okay but still a little disappointing. Great vid either way.
You guys bringing up Danny McBride reminded me of this show called vice principals. I’m watching it’s also starring Walton Goggins (cooper from fallout)
This was right after Tom Cruise started showing his real personality and beliefs which greatly damaged his career. He did this role to rejuvenate his career and the way people saw him. He then went hard into his Mission Impossible franchise and doing his crazy stunts. This film was that pivot point for him. "Forget that I'm a brainwashed psycho cult member. Look at how funny and silly I can be! Watch this crazy stunt I did!" It truly was a brilliant move by his management and marketing team.
I feel like I missed the context of this channel how did Matty not see all these movies? He’s the perfect age for these to all be swarming when he was in highschool Strict parents? American religious house? Or as simple as “no I need to replay oblivion”
And the torture scene with Ben stiller he was saying Damien cut not because he all of a sudden realised that it’s not the movie anymore but he was was yelling cut because he still thinks it’s a movie otherwise why would he say that if it wasn’t a scene before that he says to them let’s do the torture scene now and after when he meets the kid boss he ask him if there were any rewrites he missed
I think you got the humor just fine, Matty, particular the TIVO scene. If you haven't seen it may I recommend the original Mission: Impossible? And to see more quality Jack Black, check out Tenacious D
@@kademarlowe1419 Its really funny man, It was a staple in my teenage years. I understand lots of dumb jokes but it's pretty funny, especially the throwaway gags throughout the movie. You don't like it thats fine, I think its one of those movies that age really well.
Comedy can get outdated. This movie came out when I was in 7th grade. So when I rewatch movies like this, I consider it my old middle school humor which I don’t find too funny anymore. Not that it’s offensive to me in anyway, just not lol funny anymore….
@@LockPlays yeah i mean comedy is prob the most subjective genre out of film so it's no worries, sometimes you're in the mood sometime you're not haha.
I disagree with Loch hard on this one. Given the current state of Hollywood I dont think this movie has ever been more relevant. I mean look at what happened with Rachel Zegler regarding the the whole Snow White remake. That kind of ego still persists to this day and this movie lampoons that...HARD. Love to hear you guys talking movies but I really think you missed the mark on this one when it comes to calling it dated
It's not the parody of Hollywood; the white washing, or the apolitical jokes that felt dated to me, but everything surrounding it. I'll watch it again though, maybe I wasn't in the right mood for it.
Ummm no offence but I feel you’re wrong on few things in your opinion and there was a message behind it which flew right over your head apparently 😆and I’m not saying that to be a dick so don’t assume that please this movie is hilarious if you understand it and know the message behind it and still stands the test of time as one of the best comedies out there because of how daring it was so daring that RDJ didn’t get any controversy or push back from the black community most say it was the most hilarious thing they ever seen and when some people tried to stir the pot (mostly white people) they got shut down RIGHT AWAY lol Ben stillers simple jack was the only one to get controversy
The three black acting greats of Hollywood: Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Robert Downey Jr
Will Pinkett

“I don’t drop character until the dvd commentary” - RDJ

Also probably the reason Justin Theroux wrote the terrible Iron Man 2 script
@positivetakes5592 Yeah, wouldn't be shocked if they met on this film and Downey suggested him for Iron Man 2.
8:28, it's wild yall didnt understand the message for this movie. It is a ridiculously hilarious comedy, but it definitely had a message or two.
What do you mean "YOU PEOPLE?"
Don't be ridiculous

The fake trailers got me back in the day watching it in theaters.
One of my all time favorites
Whenever I watch your intro, it takes me back to the finale montage of The Great Movie Ride
This movie was incredible and the cast for it was amazing I still can’t believe Tom Cruise was in the movie

Lock looking rugged this week.
WE ARE FWAMING DWAGON
Need a episode on Assault On Arkham the Animated movie set in the Arkham game universe.

Exact same water bottle as you. But I left the cover on.
Starfield has Armin Shimerman as Walter in Constellation.

Robert Downey Jr and Tobey Maguire are in this movie. Did this count as a Avengers Movie?
One of the all time great comedies.
This movie is a national treasure 😂😂😂
Tenacious D
The movie isn't outdated, you have just let political correctness shape your opinion of it which is what comedy should never adhere to.
The non PC jokes were the ones that still worked. It's everything else that didn't work for me.

Love you boys but lots of L takes here
My opinion on Jack Black has never changed - I still don’t like him
Fkn L take you guys don’t get comedy at all. Disappointed lol wtf.
I've never cared for this one. I'm not sure why but the humor never resonated with me.
