  • Hi
    I hope you like this brief review of my new lathe.
    I can't wait to start turning on it and show you some of my creations.
    If you have any specific questions regarding this lathe, please don't hesistate to leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer.
    Thanks for watching.
    Cheers!
    Disclamer: I do not recommend any of the methods/techniques I use as these could be unsafe. Woodturning is a potentially hazerdous activity and it is your responsibility to use proper methods/techniques and follow appropriate health and safety practices.

    I bought the same lathe Andrew, beautiful machine, very versatile

    I have this lathe and it is fantastic. I tend to use it in the higher speed range for most things unless I am turning particularly large pieces. I would definitely recommend bolting it to the bench, the forces generated by a lathe this powerful can make it walk! Once bolted, put lots of heavy stuff in the cupboard. Enjoy your new toy!
    All the best
    Jim

      Hi Jim. Thanks for the advice. After using the lathe a few times I decided to change the speed to the higher range as you suggest. I agree, the lathe is absolutely fantastic and having such precise control is brilliant. Bolting down is now on my 'to do' list. Keep those great milliput videos coming - you are an inspiration! Cheers. Andrew

    I have just bought this lathe although it is now called the AT406WL. I bought the legs for it and found that at my height of 5’9” it could do with being a bit lower. But I use a little stand of 1” thick which is perfect for the odd times I need to be above my work. So far I love the machine. Mine also came with a double morse taper which ensures that the stocks are lined up before spindle turning. If you want to use a bench for the lathe than the spindle is 370mm above the base of the feet..

      Hi Bill - I'm sure you will be very happy with your new lathe. My AT1628vs was a cracking machine to use. I've since moved on to model engineering and had to sell all my woodturning gear to free up space. Have fun!
      Cheers

      Hi Andy. I'm glad it was of some use. My original budget was less than £1000, but I'm happy I decided to spend more. It is a great lathe and I'm convinced it will meet my needs for many years to come. Good luck in making your decision. If you have any questions, just drop me a message. If you are ever in the Tadcaster/York area you are welcome to call by and have a closer look.
      Cheers. Andrew

    Nice informative video, i am a new turner and have a Nova Comet II , small hobby lathe, i had the same problem with a face plate not having any grub screws in, i looked online for a machine shop near to me, got them to drill and tap a two holes and put my own grub screws in, job a gooden

      Hi Mart. A great solution. So far I've avoided reverse turning, but something for me to consider in future.
      Many thanks for the feedback. Happy turning!
      Cheers. Andrew

      I only use the reverse on my lathe when sanding, sometimes the grain in the wood still picks up when you stroke it with your fingers, sanding in both directions gets rid of this i have found.

    BTW, my wife got me a tool shop brand 12 x 38 for christmas. haven't had much chance to play with it yet, just turned a small snowman ornament for her as a thanks. hope to have time between school semesters this summer to practice up a bit. it is much faster than my old homemade lathe (600-(I think) 3200; ten speed)

    Sweet machine. Really like the moveable control box. How about the swing and between centers length? Now for some turnings for that wonderful family.

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  7 лет назад

      Hi Bill. Thanks for the comment. I should have explained the way the model number is derived. 16 refers to max bowl diameter. So 8in between spindle and bed. 28in theoretical spindle length. Cheers. Andrew

    congratulations on your new tool. may it give you many years of faithful service. with that in mind... you do know that WD-40 is water-based, right? just a thought, maybe get some tool wax or even better gun oil like Ballistol. your toll, your shop, your call. just a suggestion. be safe, some wood has a difference in mass internally, so bolting it down might be a good idea after all. cheers.

      i was under the impression that WD$) was in fact a water repellent, I have over many years used it over distributor caps, HT Leads but to mention a few.....

    Looks great Andrew. I'm sure that will give you many happy hours and a few frustrating ones of play.
    Why do they not fit a hand screw on the cover to change the belt speed? Somewhere you need to go but need tools. I've noticed that a lot on several tools.

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  7 лет назад

      Hi Paul - Fair point about lack of hand screw on the cover. I think other folks have mentioned this on other forums. It doesn't bother me too much as I now keep the belt on the faster speed and only check belt tension occasionally.
      Cheers. Andrew

    Hello Andrew, it's been almost a year now since you got the lathe, have you bolted it down yet? If you haven't, why not? To operate it safely, it should be bolted down. It's a nice looking lathe, and it does seem to operate father smoothly. Thanks for this video.

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  6 лет назад

      Hi Len - thanks for commenting. No, I've not bolted it down (yet). All the work I undertake is very much balanced, apart from the occasional off-centre stuff. The lathe runs super smooth and I don't try to turn large out of balanced objects. If I ever get courage to undertake such activities I will definitely bolt the lathe to the bench, and then bolt the bench to the floor! I'm very safety conscious and there has never been an instance where the lathe has moved. It's a really heavy piece of gear. Love it!
      Cheers
      Andrew

    Very nice review.. 50hz ? what voltage...? We have no distributors of Axminster here in the United State it's a beautiful lathe.. I would bolt it down for safety...

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Garry. Thanks for the comments.... The motor is 3-phase but the inverter allows it to be connected to standard UK domestic mains (240v 50Hz). It's become a very poular lathe with pro, semi-pro, and learners like me. The lathe is built to a very good standard, although manufactured by Kingcraft Machinery Company in Taiwan. It might be that this company also manufactures similar products for distribution in USA. If you are in the market for a new lathe it might be worth contacting them. Bolting of the lathe is still on my 'to do' list.
      All the best and happy turning!

    Hi Andrew, thanks for the helpful video. I'm hoping to purchase this lathe at the turn of the year and, like you, will be bench mounting it so that I can get the height right for me. I am hundreds of miles away from an axminster branch: would it be possible for you to give me the spindle height measurement (from the bottom of the lathe where it meets the bench to the centre point of the drive spur)? That way I would be able to build the bench in advance. Thanks again. Graeme

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Graeme
      Lucky you!
      I've just done some measurements.... I am about 5'9" height. They say that if you measure from floor to your elbow with your lower arm horizontal, this is the height the centre of the headstock spindle should be from the floor. The height of my bench is about 28.25". The distance from the bottom of the lathe to the centre of the spindle is 14.5". So the total distance from the floor to the centre of the spindle is 42.75" and I find this a comfortable working height.
      I hope that this info is of use.
      Feel free to ask any other questions you might have - and I will try to help.
      Happy Christmas!
      Andrew

    • @littlebottleseverywhere
      @littlebottleseverywhere 6 лет назад

      WOW - that was fast :@) Thank you very much indeed, that is exactly what I was looking for. I'm about the same height as you and I was thinking that if I purchased the legs I would have to build myself a box to stand on!!! Again, thanks for taking the time to do this for me, it's really appreciated. Merry Christmas to you & yours. G

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  6 лет назад

      Hi Graeme. No problem. The legs would definitely be too high for me. Mike Waldt also did a review. I think he is over 6ft tall and the legs were spot on for him.
      All the best.
      Andrew

    • @littlebottleseverywhere
      @littlebottleseverywhere 6 лет назад

      Sorry, Andrew, I'm wondering if I could please trouble you for another measurement? I was going by the "overall dimensions" as listed on the website and realised that they're not, quite, overall! The length of the base is 1150mm but I'm wondering how much the motor sticks out from the headstock. The height measurement you gave me will let me build the stand: if I could please ask you to measure the overall length of the lathe (base + motor) then I will be able to figure out where to put it. Sorry to be a pest.
      I hope you had a good Christmas.
      G

    • @tiddlerfromtad
      @tiddlerfromtad  6 лет назад

      Hi Graeme.
      Just got back home from relatives....
      If you slide the headstock left to the end of the bed, the motor will overhang by 9in. If you slide the tailstock right to the other end, the handwheel will overhanging by 6.5in. This would then give you the max 28in between spindles. So if you only ever need 21in between spindles, you don't need to overhang the motor.
      I hope that helps.
      Cheers
      Andrew
