  • The AT1628VS is a medium sized woodturning lathe from our Trade Series range and it is a very popular choice among discerning woodturners. We are so impressed with its quality and performance that we decided to equip our Skill Centre with several of these lathes as soon as we could. Supplied as a bench top model with the option to purchase a leg stand if required, the lathe and leg stand are of heavy cast iron construction to minimise vibration. The 1628 woodturning lathe features electronic variable speed supplied via an inverter with two speed ranges for maximum torque at low speeds. The advantage of variable speed is that you can fine tune the speed of the lathe to the work in hand. This is especially important when turning large or out of balance workpieces and it is so convenient for fast speed changes. Spindle indexing is provided at 10° intervals and a magnetic control console with start/stop, speed control and forward/reverse can be conveniently positioned for the work in hand. Everything about the lathe feels just right, with cam-lock action of the tool rest banjo and tailstock, all controls work smoothly and effortlessly. A swivelling headstock can be very useful, especially if bench mounting the lathe but it will also slide along to the tailstock end of the bed. This allows the turning of larger diameter bowls and platters off the end of the bed and increases the capacity considerably. A 460mm bed extension kit is available as an optional extra and this can be bolted onto either end of the lathe bed. If you have the lathe fitted to the cast iron leg stand it can also be attached in a lower position offering an impressive 875mm swing over the bed. This is achieved by moving the tool rest banjo down onto the bed extension and fitting the tool rest extension post supplied with the bed extension kit. If you are serious about your woodturning and want a lathe that offers excellent performance, features and value, this lathe would be a sound choice. Supplied with Axminster four prong drive centre, Axminster revolving tailstock centre, 150mm (6")faceplate and a knockout bar.

great video, and great featured machine, especially the alignment pin, if you have any interest, look into 'Tramming a head" in a milling machine, all the dial indicator work just to set it back to zero!!- that's why this pin idea is so good, should get a design prize for this fellas :)))

Thanks alot for the review. I really love the robustness of this wood turning lathe.
My only concern I would love to rsise, is the absence of chuck in these models. Why please? Love from Kenya.

    Hi Axminster folks!
Loving my 1628; one of the last before you re-labled as 406 :)
I'd like to be able to occasionally move the lathe out from its 'wall facing' position but the legs don't have the bolt holes to allow fitment of the lifting castors (vid time 16:25 here). Any chance of a template so I can drill and tap them myself? Just to get them in exactly the right place, in the hope that you might get the wheels back in stock at some point... (part no.507151?) :)
    All the best,
    Frank

Hi Frank, we do not have a template for these castors. The only dimensions we have are as follows -
Mounting plate is 74mm wide x 120mm high
With the lever down the overall width is 185mm
Distance centre to centre between fixing points is 103mm.
      I hope this helps!

@@axminster Brilliant, thank you very much! If I might trouble you for one last measurement... Are you able to give the distance from the bottom edge of the lathe leg, up to where the first fixing hole should be? I'll be able to work out the optimum position when I get the wheels of course, but just in case you have that measurement it'll save some head scratching when I get to it. No worries at all if not :)

I'm a little confused. I came here from your website where I was viewing the AT406WL , I noticed the lathe shown here is the AT1628, then when I went back to your website to check, I see that the 'in detail' description on the AT406WL page describes the lathe as AT1628VS. Could you clarify this for me please?
Ideally I am looking for a trade wood lathe in the middle range of the market, but it must be mobile.
I see you are out of stock for the stands of the AT406WL/AT1628VS Lathes, do you know how long for please? Also, in the picture it does not show the stands showing the pre-drilled holes for the Axminster Workbench Castors, will your new stock have these holes?
Thanks for any help you can give

I've done more research, even though your vidio says 2018, the model shown above is around 6 years old, is the model advertised on your site AT406WL, the same model, but just with a different number?

I guess Axminster don't review their own RUclips comments then? 😒

      Dear Mr Chapman,
Please accept my apologies for the delay in response.
The AT406WL was previously known as the AT1628VS.
We are expecting stock of the stand for this model to be available towards the end of April, you can place a back order for this online or sign up to be notified by email when this in back in stock.
Please be advised that the stand comes pre drilled you just need to remove the feet, the thread size is M6. I hope this helps.
      Kind regards

Axminster Tools & Machinery it's just a shame the motor was dropped from 2hp to the current( no pun intended) 1.5hp on the rebranded model.
