Making a NEW Trunnion for BIG D11T Bulldozer! | Machining & Welding
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- Watch us transform a chunk of steel plate into a critical component for a giant bulldozer cylinder! We’re making a new trunnion for a D11T bulldozer’s blade lift cylinder barrel. We start with a thick piece of flame cut 350 grade steel plate and transform it on our trusty lathe. We start by turning the ends into spigot pins, the crucial connection points for the yoke bearings. Then we bore out the centre to the precise size for fitting over the barrel. We then show the fitting of the new trunnion on to our newly machined cylinder barrel before welding it out with dual shield wire. What do you think of this transformation!?
In this video we are using:
Hafco TM-1740G Centre lathe
Hafco BM-63VE Milling machine
WIA 500i Weldmatic welder

Hopefully no demonetisation on this one
No worries on my part about the Franna. Can't rush excellence.
Nice work guys, have a spectacular weekend. (My lorikeet watches with me, he enjoys his chats with George)
Peeling the trunion like an onion.
I'm a machinist by trade but I still find watching this channel cathartic. Today I spent 8 hours making a specialized bolt for a nuclear power plant. The tightest tolerance was in tenths and it had a parabolic contour for a metal on metal seal. I respect the breadth of Curtis's skillset. I could probably compete on the machining end but I'd be lost with the various types of welding he managed to do so they look easy.
cheers mate, respect! 😎👊
My mind is beginning to boggle from the description of that bolt for a nuclear power station! With some Aussie politicians talking about nuclear power stations and the description of that bolt, it has got me worried that Australia may no longer have enough high end engineering tradespeople to build and maintain said power stations.
There was an article on ABC a few years ago that Australia is going to need something like 30,000 welders to be able to support the new renewable energy industry. I have a real problem with that figure as we had zero boys in our Design Technology classes in years 10, 11 and 12 this year. Not enough boys chose the subject and they have access to a terrific DT facility in the Senior School.

That's crazy! The work order for that must have been like a book!
@@markfryer9880Если вам нужен сварщик - я готов приехать и поработать у вас!😊
Same here, I'm a machinist too but definitely not going to challenge his welding skills.😊
CEE. I would wager that you never expected this channel to become so popular with such a global audience. 781k, and we see people commenting from all over the globe! (Missouri, USA here) Honestly what is so compelling is the fact that you made something of very high value using core components saving more than half the cost of OEM. The videography is equal to a Science Channel “How It’s Made,” especially the high speed stuff that shows the crucial details when slowed down, Homey, and of course chips to go with the welding. I initially started watching due to my own son learning welding, and I wanted to have the understanding to discuss what he is doing with a better understanding. Clearly, welding is just a gateway to much higher fabrication and repair skills. I’m sure I’m joined by thousands of others who wait on Friday morning every week for their “fix” of the master @ work. Thanks both for sharing just a small portion of your lives with us.
Hey John! Thanks for noticing the value focus - love that you dig the "Science Channel" vibe with the slow-mo close-ups (and Homey & chips!). That's awesome your sons welding journey led you here, and couldn't agree more, welding unlocks so much potential. Thanks for the kind words and being a part of this. Knowing thousands tune in Fridays is incredibly motivating. We appreciate you sharing your time too!
In storytelling terms, you have a great balance of showing and telling, each used for what it does best. Your video work seems a great advertisement for the skilled trades and may help a lot of young people.
@@markterribile6948 It is helping young people, more than you realise! At least one TAFE, trade school uses footage from various episodes to provide excellent quality instruction to students in how to operate the various lathes and milling machines while talking in Metric not Bananas!
Also while just focusing on machining jobs and not BBQs or tool promotions or travel adventures.

Was at the gym talking to a random dude the other day and discovered we both watch CEE, love it. GA, USA here.
Missouri here too.
I always appreciate that he tells us roughly what he's saving the customer. Slick business move Curtis!
It's Kurtis FFS
@@malcolmirving9485 Get over yourself... I've never seen Kurtis care, nor do I think we ever will. Most people making this mistake in their comments, have only *heard* his name, and as "Curtis" with a "C" is the usual way it is written, the mistake is understandable...
Find something worthwhile to point out, or just shut the fuck up all together. Either would be preferable.
These videos are a wonderful business move. “What are we getting for the mega bux we spend at CEE?”
Look here. It’s our part(s) getting made better than new.
I love how the birds just come barging into your shop singing their little hearts out. It seems like they're excited to see you guys. Or maybe they're just after treats.
The dinosaurs are totally there for the food.
Seeing the number of dinosaurs varying from video to video, I strongly suspect those treats are directly translating into greater breeding success. And the chicks - after fledging - are learning to scrounge before the parents drive them off to find their own territory. Where they too will try scrounging and spreading the behaviour.
@@a.karley4672if im correct they're magpies (the frequent flyers anyway), which means they're social and communicate, like crows do (they're related to crows). So information isn't only shared by parents, other members of the social group can learn about good feeding sites. I wouldn't be surprised if they have an entire flock looking for food in far less time than it takes to breed an entire flock. Crazy smart animals.
But for sure they know exactly where they're going, what they're doing, and who they're looking for. Pretty sure all they care about is the food, but they know exactly who and how to get it.
Even with Caterpillar’s mass manufacturing efficiency and buying power, their blistering parts markup still leaves Kurtis and Karen room to make a nice living. Top dress that with Kurtis’ experience and trust with the customer, parts warranty from the yellow mothership is less an issue also. Nice job, Kurtis and Karen! The slow mo chip roll off is intoxicating. Rock on!
There's also the fact that thanks to the Kurtis magic, parts leaving his shop are better than the CAT warranted originals were in the first place.
Doesn't help that shipping is likely eyewateringly expensive
@@kenore4003No kidding! You're either paying crazy money for airfreight or waiting five to eight weeks for shipping and clearances.

You see Kurtis, that is why you are a true professional machinist. You used coolent when you knew it was going to make a shop mess but produce a better product. And for that I will always respect you! Sorry, BTW Karen great editing on the welding segment! You're good girl!
Kurtis is broking, we'll need to fabricate a new one. George and Georgia serenading each other was beautiful. Thank you Karen and Kurtis for yet another informative and entertaining video. Have a great weekend guys.
Kurtis’s superpower is always putting the strap exactly at the balance point of a cylinder. 😎
Right?!?! It's kind of incredible 😂
Or does he you see what Karen let’s you see‼️😂
One of his super powers....He has many
Or the superpower of editing!
Granted Karen is the magician but I'd bet it doesn't take over 3 tries to find the center of gravity. What fascinates me and you can't edit out mistakes is how he scoots outside with a finished piece clearing the doors by 2".
I get the CEE notification, I know it's Friday! I won't lie I am equally excited for not only the repair but the outtakes.
It's my favorite Friday morning ritual here in Canada.
The pair of you must be producing some of the best educational engineering documentaries in the world at the moment. Fantastic engineering with demonstrable expertise on show in every action and decision. Excellent photography and video production. Nice wild life on show. Very well done both. Thank you.
Wow thanks for the great comment! We aim for informative and engaging content, so glad it hit the mark. We appreciate you!
Good job. It was nice to hear George & the Missus sing you the song of their people.
I am so ready to get into big metal, big chips and small swear words. Yourself Kurtis, Karen and Homeless have the ability to just rip out all my stresses, of which there are many today, and I am very grateful for that. Thanks guys, you have no idea how grateful I am..
Hey mate, a new day tomorrow to start fresh, hope you can take a break and enjoy the video 👊😎
George George George of the jungle watch out for that tree 🌳!!
Another excellent effort Kurtis, Karen and Homey
The "Curb" ending was brilliant!
Its Friday and Kurtis has got the worlds sharpest piece of chalk out!!!👍👍👍
I was going to comment on that too. He maintains the sharpest soapstone I've ever seen. Reminds me of my dad and his sense of precision and tool maintenance.
A big hats off to the camera work and editing. The machining was interesting but I think it was overshadowed by the butcher birds. Mind you, the thought of swinging a big chunk of steel that shape would give me an adrenaline surge I reckon.
That you are able to do such economic work in a small shop must make you a go to for your customers. Very impressive.
having low overheads can definitely keep us competitive and customers happy 👍
I work at a large Caterpillar dealer in North America. We were talking about how amazing it is that such a small shop with one guy on the tools is able put out so much work. Compared to us with hundreds of technicians who seem to get very little done given the amount of resources we have...
Haha
I'm wondering if he honed that barrel before sending it out. They tend to shrink after welding.
@@brandonh5336 Kevin said exactly that at, 25:26.
Well crap. I guess thats what i get for skipping through this time instead of listening to metal chips being created for the duration of the video.
Those birds are really singing for their supper. Another successful mission by CEE love the outtakes thanks for the video. Have a lovely weekend.
Kurtis and Karen make their work look easy. True professionals always make hard work look easy. ❤
Oh my. Your contacts with your pretty birds add a whole new rich level to your videos. When the song birds sing, copywrite free music and Kurtis looks up from his work to listen to an awesome concert of music it was a sweet moment. Then Homeless comes over and does a fine job of inspecting the work area for safety and quality of work. He was obviously satisfied. You guys are so blessed with awesome friends.
24:20 look at that welding , spot on !!!!
Hey Karen, Hey Kurtis, hope things are going great for you both. And Homie. More Homie cam please! Cheers you guys!
Will have to get Homey cam out again next time! 🥰
@7:22 I just love your wildlife sancuary, camouflaged as a machine shop! The birds are very happy and love singing about it. 😊
You may think you are teaching something but you have no idea how much you are teaching i really wanna say thank you very much I have learn a lot from you please continue the good work ❤ I am a big fan of you and respect to camera lady too ❤
In this episode Kurtis is truly a Disney Princess with the Butcher birds singing him encouragement. 😂
What about that huge red bird in the background outside....?
@@Anton-tf9iw his Workshop is on an old Heilport and the Helicopter is from one of His neighbours.
"Kurtis is truly a Disney Princess" is a phrase I never thought I'd read on this channel. ;-)
Considering the agenda Disney is pushing, those words could be truer than you think! 😆
Glad he restrains himself from wearing a big, flowing ball gown. I'm sure he'd look good in it, but it'd be a bit of a safety hazard.
Karen, love how you left the Birds singing and talking in the video......
such fine friends you have visiting your shop
Wonderful cinematography 🎥That cut to the singing birds 🐦🐦 was sublime 😎
I don't know how Kurtis lured such talent from Hollywood, but I'm grateful he did.

Homeless will be 12 in September he's a senior doggo now 🥰
Happy to report that all around the world, there are old blokes like me watching this content and remarking, “so that how they do ….”. Very relieved to report that just as many young apprentices are out there watching this as they have a go IRL. Fantastic stuff from the team @CEE
I didn't realize how advanced your shop was, you have piped in organic music on the wing. Impressive. Great work as always. All the best to you, Karen and Homeless.
Honestly i don’t know what is better watching Kurtis work he’s magic or the good old loop of words either way it’s always a great time Kurtis and Karen put out a new video please keep up the amazing work
And with perfect timing once again. Godda love how precise Karen and Kurtis are with all of their work. Absolutely love it guys!!!! Another great video
Lovely work. It was fun to see George and friend singing as you work.
I like the video but I don't mind watching the complete process even if it's a 60-90 min video. I understand time lapsing duplicate processes, but I enjoy seeing each step. Thanks guys ❤️❤️
Hey mate thanks for the feedback! It's a balancing act between quality vs quantity and making it enjoyable for most viewers 😅
Several years ago Abom79 posted a video of installing, on his tool post, a hand operated, 250 kilo capacity, jib crane. In his next video, Adam spoke of the many comments he got about how that weight would break the tool post. This video shows just how strong the tool post is. Each "start of cut" during the interrupted cuts shown at 6:15 _must_ be more than anything Adam's jib crane would ever apply to the tool post.
Greetings from Germany. Happy Weekend y'all!
it's great that repairing is cheaper then buying a new one, because it keeps a lot of small shops like yours and your providers, happy and employed!
if you're ever low on video ideas, can we get a tour of your metal supplier? I want to see the plasma cutter that cut that blank out.
Yes that's on the idea list! We've asked them in the past and they're open to us doing a tour video 😄👍
I vote for that ! 👍
Broking, a new word for the Oxford English Dictionary. 😂 Really liked the slow mo action on the lathe, you can really see how the tooling works. The outakes are fabulous, you could put them on DVD's and sell them as merchandise. 👍
It is actually a word, not a new one. An insurance broker does broking for their business for example.
Great job folks!! Thanks for taking us along!! Have a great weekend!!😎🍻
Kurtis, of course, is a master, but props to Karen’s direction and camera work - would be great to get some behind the scenes on how she decides and approaches the specialty shots - you guys, along with Homeless and the birds of course, are an awesome team! Thanks!
Butcher birds, butchering English (Kurtis), Bananas, Homey and Karen stitching it all together. This one had everything! Greatly enjoyed your work as always. Thank you K, K and H 👍
29 minute video?? Totally unacceptable we all need at least 45 minutes minimum. An hour would be great. Keep up the great work. Friday mornings are what I look forward to.
Yeah what he said!

To any Merkins watching - that was a tongue-in-cheek comment.
😂 awesome videos and so entertaining and fun! But I can tell that you know your stuff and are good at what you do! Keep it up brother!
It’s always very satisfying to watch you carve a beautiful piece from a block of rusty steel.
You know a video is well done and popular, when it receives over 1000 new likes in the tike it takes to watch.
I'm never skipping another ad ever again for this channel.
hey mate we appreciate that but skip the ads, no one's got time for those 😂👍
Colpack ad was well up to par for a top video Cheers 👍👍
Don’t ads bring you revenue?
Awesome. I could watch that big lathe for hours. Was a little sad not to see the barrel turned down.. its not boring! Thank you for sharing the repair.
I agree. But thanks to the endless hours of CEE I've watched, I can fill in the gaps perfectly.
For some reason I really like the sound of two machined surfaces sliding over each other. Thank you for the great video Kurtis and Karen!
29min? Dam thats long.... Did i watch the entire thing. You betcha arse i did👍👍👍👍
What a crazy amount of time. Practically in time-lapse. We see the composite in half an hour. That took days?! Thank you very much 🫶 Thank you for that!
Gee, I liked the idea of the "centre piece " in the 4 jaw. Bloody good idea that. Thanks.😊
You never seem to "play" with small bits Kurtis. Well done mate, the new barrel looks awesome. Lots of work but worth every penny saved for the customer.
2am in the morning CEE and my morning coffee. Life is good.
Every video!!! Every video I am blown away by the quality of the camera work and the editing ... just superb!! It's a bonus that the content is so interesting. Thanks Karen (and Kurtis) 🙂🙂
Thanks again for the channel, we all learn something, every week.👍👌🇦🇺
Kurtis, I really enjoy your channel, I love big machinery and people that know how to use it to make useful parts. I do have a suggestion about something you do that I think you mite reconsider. I have watched several of your episodes in which you weld on a part that is still in your lathe. I realize that this is very convenient but there is a real possibility that you may ruin the spindle bearings. I was the maintenance manager at a large aero-space tooling machine shop in Los Angeles and we had many occasions where the tool maker wanted to weld on the part while it was mounted on one of our machines. My answer was always "NO". Even with having the welder ground connected to the part there is a possibility that the welder will ground through the machine, your lathe in your case, this means that the grounding current will go through the spindle bearings and if it does it can cause a small arc cavity to form from the rolling component of the bearing to the bearing race(s) this will eventually turn into a spalding of the bearing surfaces and eventually failure. I know that you know the price and usually long delivery of a large diameter, high accuracy bearing and the big pain in the ass to change them.
If you have no other choice but to weld while in your lathe (or milling machine) make sure that the machines grounding wire is disconnected, connect the welder ground as close to the weld area as possible, be sure that the ground clamp is tightly screwed onto material that has no paint or rust or mill slag on the grounding area. Use the lowest setting on the welder that will work and only tack weld.
Again I love watching you tackle a job, you have a lot of great knowledge and common machining sense, which, I am sure, is related to your experience. I also wonder, do you make a drawing of any sort when you make something from stock? For example the draw bolt you made for your mill that allowed you to run coolant through it.
Thanks again for all of the enjoyment!
Rex
6:01 the sound of the first cut on the lathe would make a really good techno song^^
you even know the bpm, because he said, the lathes spinning at 145 rpm...
You saved your customer a truck load of money !! Very nice work as alway's !! The outtakes this week were great ....they are always good but this week they were special 😂😂😂 !! Great job guys !!👍👍
Another great video from CEE thank you Kurtis, Karen and Homey for bringing us along...

Those lathes are just amazing. The combination of brute strength and extreme precision.
Just hearing that interrupted cut brings back memories of machining 3,000 lb flame cut universal joints on a wartime 60” engine lathe. They we’re about 24” across and 8” thick.

Greetings from Boise, Idaho! I enjoy listening to the many sounds in the shop as the work progresses. The "Ka-chunk" of the interrupted cut gradually merges into a gentle hiss. And "George" and " Gracie" singing a loud cheerleader duet added to the symphony of shop sounds.
