@Ryan Arthur Figueras Hey Ryan! These card counts listed were with subtracting the cards as instructed in the video. Were you able to get similar card counts? Do not forget to SHIFT + CLICK the Resources => Respective rotation cards as well to get all the cards before you subtract "!NotDoing" and "!POTENTIAL_DUPLICATE" tags! Hope this helps!!
I have watched so many videos trying to figure out how to get rid of unnecessary cards and such. and yours is the first to explain it in a simple language. Thank you so much for this video!
Hi, Austin thanks for your anki videos, they are super helpful! Are the #UWorld and #OME tagged questions also contained in the #AK Step 2 v4? Do you recommend doing the #UWorld tagged questions as well for Step 2? Thanks!
No problem! Yes those would generally all be under the step 2 v4 tag! I would follow my instructions in the video and try to make your own cards for Uworld questions that you get incorrect as sometimes doing the tagged uworld questions can spoil the answers for when you do the Qbank! Good luck!
Extremely helpful video. I am about to start clerkships and was lost as to how I was going to use Anki to study--this made me feel so much better. Thank you!
How is it going man? Do you feel like you can catch up with unlocking new Anki cards while doing your rotation? Honestly not sure if there’s enough time lol
Hey man! Life has been good. Honesty it was pretty manageable, the card count was much lower than step 1 and I noticed if you do 25-30 new cards a day it wasn’t too bad! Hope that helps bro!
Hi austin, Thanks for the video. I have a question. I'm not a US student. I did not take the Step One exam, and I want to use Anking only for rotations. Should I use the deck as you explained? First, should I suspend irrelevant step 1 cards as you do when you click on step 1 and alt-click on step 2 and suspend them? If yes, should I suspend all Step 1 and 2 cards before doing this step? And should I use the search as you did with the control, alt, and shift, or is there another way (because I saw in the comments that you said that there was 6k overlap, so I didn't understand if I should do the steps you did and then get all the 15k cards; I didn't understand this point) or do something else, and how do you advise me? Should I start in Anki and then perform UWorld, or what is the correct way to study and use these two resources?
Hey! Good question! If you are only using Anking for rotations then I would recommend that you follow the steps and only do the Step 2 cards. You will not need to worry about doing the overlap thing since you did not study any cards prior to this current deck. Suspend everything and just unlock cards as outlined in the video for each rotation. I would study using Uworld and read the explanations thoroughly and then after that you can find Anki cards based on content you got incorrect!
@@design7836 For Step 1, I would use BNB and PATHOMA and sketchy prior to Anki and Uworld. For rotations and step 2, I would just use uworld and work backwards to find relevant Anki cards to review!
@siham2697 Hard to say, but if you’re unlocking 100-150 daily it will be front loaded each day until you can space out the cards. Reviews would be probably 300-400 and then you would have to do news after
Hey Austin! Thank you for the video. I had a question about subdecks. I created some subdecks while studying for Step 1 but I kind of want to "reset" my anki before I start rotations but don't want to lose my time intervals. I'm currently using Ankihub, and couldn't find any resources that talk about a way to update the decks because obviously, Ankihub does that now. My thought process was that I could sign out of my ankihub, then update the deck according to anking V11, and then resign in with ankihub. I just didn't know if updating my deck would get rid of my subdecks like I wanted and put the cards back in their original decks.
Hey, great question. In regards to what you were saying about sub-decks, typically, if you update your deck, it would update each individual card, and it would not move the cards into different decks from where they were in the original location. Instead of resetting your Anki, prior to going into rotations, I would recommend, you continue to pick up studying where you left off and just right click the cards that are difficult for you and you can press the “forget” option This will allow you to relearn this card as if you have seen it for the first time. There will be some cards that you already remember and know very well and in that case, there’s no need to reset the entire interval the card. Best of luck! I hope this explanation makes sense.
Great question! Yes, it is still the exact same steps. The most updated version of the deck is still linked, which is the free version has all the information you need to excel on step two and on clinical exams. Best of luck!
Hi Austin, thanks so much for this video, it's been super helpful as a new Anki user! What settings do you usually set for # new cards/day, review cards/day, graduating interval, easy interval etc. Ie what do you change on the options menu from the default settings?
Hey - thanks for the video! Just wanted to see if you had some hindsight advice after finishing Step2 and clinicals - would you still recommend unlocking cards based on the "created column" order before doing UW questions? Just about to start clinicals, and many of my classmates are planning on doing UW with no baseline knowledge and then unsuspending cards affiliated with the relevant UW tags. Hope that makes sense and thanks in advance for any insight!
No problem! Hope it was helpful!! I would continue to unlock the created column so you can get through the cards with 1-2 weeks to spare before shelf so you can just hammer questions and do reviews without doing new cards! So absolutely do questions and learn and unlock backwards from UW but I would also do the cards from the created column as well so you can get through more cards. I usually took the total cards and divided it by how many weeks I wanted to finish all the content by! Best of luck 🙂💯
Way to be proactive!! :) Glad I was able to help out, you’re going to do amazing!! I just finished my rotations and I’m working on finishing all of my rotation specific advice videos so definitely check them out. They’re all done beside OB and Peds right now but I’m editing the last two videos!
Hey thank you for the amazing video. I am new to anki and still trying to figure how to use the best of it. I didn't use anki for step 1. how can i know which cards are related from step 1 deck to step 2 and should I do them. I'm an IMG and I have time for that or should I focus on online Step 2 deck.
Hey man! Glad you enjoyed the video. If you didn’t use this for Step 1 and are studying for Step 2 CK I would just use the step 2 cards and it would be the exact same steps shown in this video except you’d do all 15k cards instead of the people who used Anki for step 1 only have like 9k to do since 6k overlap! Hope this helps! Good luck!!!
Hi! This is similar to how Anking recommends to use the deck as well. This ensures you only do the cards relevant from Step 2 and shelf exam for each rotation! Best of luck.
@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks,I think he get rid of lolnotacop and zanki pharmacology and zanki step decks,do you recommend to do that?i didnt use anki for step 1 and i want to use it just for rotations, Another difference that you add resources when you click shift,he doesnt do that? So what is the overall difference and what is preferred to use just for rotations
Good question. Since you didn’t use it for step 1 you don’t need to use those decks but no need to delete them. Just keep them suspended. Follow the steps in my video and that’s how you find all the cards for just step 2 and shelf!
@@AustinNguyenMDafter i followed the steps in the video i got 5500 cards for IM , Because i want just to use them for shelf should i do control+alt for zanki steps dexk, zanki pharmacology and lolnotacop? Or those cards are necessary for shelves?
Hey! I would not control + alt anymore cards as they are often times double tagged and you don’t want to miss out on any of the necessary content! 5500 cards for IM sounds like the accurate amount 👍 Good luck!
Tip for not having to do the whole control+alt thing every day: flag the cards in the 2 tags as RED. Then they're easy to spot when unsuspending each day. Not sure if this works as well as I'm thinking it does, but just an idea!
That’s not a bad idea! Thanks for commenting :) I’ve gotten so fast at the hot keys it only takes a second to do it a day and I’d rather just have it filtered in case some tags change in future updates!
Is subtracting the step 1 tags unnecessary now that there's "only step 2" tag under "no dupes" tag correct? Also, when you unsuspend certain number of cards, do you just keep them in the original deck or do u make a subdeck or filtered deck? Like keep all them in original deck will pile up to like several thousand no? sorry im a bit new to anki.
Hey! If it’s only step 2 tag then that should be fine and you don’t need to do the steps that I did. I keep everything in their original deck and as you study it will space out so you won’t be doing thousands a day. It really is based on how many cards you unlock daily at a time! Hope this helps 👍
Hi! Great video! I am studying for step 1 and step 2 at the same time which will be taken after rotations. How do I make a specific deck for the individual rotations while I keep my regular cards for step 1 and 2 going?
Hi, you do not have to make your own decks. All the cards will be under the premade decks already, and as long as you unsuspended them you can study all of them together as normal. Make sure you use the tags, defined the cards you need which are specific to which exam you’re studying for first. Best of luck! You will do great!
Hey! Anytime :) glad the videos are helpful for you - my setup is totally the same. To be honest, I haven’t even updated to V.10 yet 🤣 but honesty the updates are always pretty minor and not much changes so it’s not a big deal!!
Thanks for the video, still i didnt start rotations ,i want to ask you how to use the deck after solving uworld how i can find relevant cards after each uworld question ,after i follow your steps i got 5000+ and i sorted them on created for IM but how i can find relevant cards ,and should i solve them after each uworld question or to unlock 50 card each day? And i want to know each question had alot of related cards?
Good question! The best way I’ve found is to do uworld and read the explanations carefully. Afterward, you can search key terms and phrases that you do not fully understand like “nephrotic syndrome” and unlock the relevant cards related to it and created in the same day as it. I was unlocking about 40-50 cards for every 40 block of questions. Best of luck!
Thanks austin, but the way you show have questions based on other resource than uworld so how you unsuspend them? How you pick which cards to unsuspend (i mean the cards that not based on uworld)
I usually just unlock a chunk of related cards and study them after reviewing them for those cards! It’s not bad just studying the cards even without doing the questions or watching any videos!
You should just go based on created date! I would look at the total number of cards and divided by how many weeks you have before your exam. Typically about 100-150 cards is more than enough 👍
Hi Austin! Thanks for the video! I wanted to know, so total all the cards that are to be done/necessary for step2 is about 15882 cards? The rest of the Anking deck is not relevant (only used for Step1)?
Hi Austin! Thanks for this video, it's really helpful! I am a rising 3rd year and I matured the full Zanki deck last year, do you recommend continuing with those reviews in addition to the step 2 anking deck?
Hi Annie! Happy this video was helpful :) Yes I would absolutely keep those cards in circulation as they have relevance for step 2 and since you already matured them you should know them pretty well! This will reduce the number of total cards you have to do for step 2 which is really nice because of how much time is spent in the clinic as an M3. Wishing you all the best as you begin clerkships!!!
Thanks for all the support :) I’ll try to put a video together once my schedule is more stable! Basically I am just doing Anki as shown in this video and Uworld problems specific to the rotation. I’ll keep all of the Anki cards in circulation for the next year until STEP 2. I think that is a good plan!!
Good question! Yes, you could move the cards around or specifically study under a specific deck of cards if you click the drop down menu on the start screen but I highly recommend just studying everything together as your step exam will be all mixed content and you want to keep everything straight and in spaced repetition
On Anking V11 IM has something like 5300 cards following the same steps you did. Do you think this is due to any particular reason or maybe they just got rid of some more duplicates? Thanks!
Hey! Good question, they probably updated the deck and got rid of more of the duplicates! You should be just fine. Make sure you do as many Uworld questions as possible too! Good luck!
Hey! This video was really helpful. I'm struggling to figure out how to have the unsuspended cards appear first in my reviews with this method. Any suggestions?
Hey Jessica! Great question, so the newly unsuspended cards will be “blue” and considered new cards so you’ll typically do them after you finish all your reviews for the day. If you would like to do the new cards BEFORE your reviews you can tweak this in your deck settings where you can click “show new cards before reviews” hope this helps out!!!
Hey man great video! Just a quick question, I’m an International medical student and am planning on taking step 1 except using my in house Anki cards & Qbanks (like Amboss & UWORLD) for practice and SketchyMicro ofc lol. Since Step 1 is P/F I feel like doing anking specific cards isn’t that necessary and I can focus on my lectures. Q tho, do you feel like it will be a detriment in my clinical years cause I’d suspend my cards and start doing Step 2 Anking from afresh rather than using some of the ‘mature’ Step1/Step2 cards if I would’ve used anking during preclinical? Like is it reasonable to assume I can finish Step 2 cards and shelf cards while going on rounds etc? Thanks 🙏
Hey bro! Glad the video was helpful. I definitely think you can get by even without the mature cards from step 1. There is some overlap but not too much! Something that may help is just looking up cards before you make any from QBanks which can help unlock some of the pre made cards and save you some time! Also, although Step 1 is P/F now, definitely don’t take it lightly. I am a tutor for step 1 and have seen students struggle even with using Anking (usually because they started too late) so just stay on top of everything and you’ll do great!!
Using this method, roughly how many total cards/day were you doing? I did a simulation using the anki add on and it looks like its be something like 5-600 cards/day. Does that seem right? Seems tough to manage during clinicals.
Hey man! It honestly was not like that. Maybe 300-400 per day total including new cards! Make sure your settings are correct, I go over this in another video and also just try to do 60-100 new cards a day and you’ll finish well before the clerkship ends! Best of luck 💪💯
Thanks for uploading this amazing video , any method please how to delete the (!DELETE) tag ?I am a new anki user and I have tried couple of things but it didn’t work
No problem man! Glad to hear it was helpful. You can just highlight all the cards in that tag and delete them. After that you can clear unused tags! Best of luck!
@@AustinNguyenMD So basically except for the step of suspending irrelevant step 1 cards, I have to repeat all the other steps every time I open my Anki and unsuspend new cards?
Thanks for this video! I'm starting on IM too! Do you go through that process of Ctrl+Alt not doing and Shift+Resources each day to unlock new cards? Also, I'm not sure why but once I go through those steps that you did, I only have 3500 cards as opposed to your >5000.
No problem at all! Yes I go through this process every single time I unlock cards just to make sure I’m getting all the correct cards eventually unlocked and saving time by not bothering with any duplicates! Hmm, I’m not sure why that would be the case! Are you sure you Shift+clicked IM under resources?
That is really strange! I’m not sure why that would be happening. It should be around 5500 cards. Shelf > IM. Ctrl + Alt not doing and potential duplicates. Then SHIFT + Click Resources>IM then Ctrl + Alt not doing and potential duplicates. Is your Shelf IM around 5200 and then Resources IM 6600?
That’s a great idea! I didn’t think about that. I usually just do the hot keys and it’s been second nature to me now so it only takes a few seconds. Only thing with a new tag is that you’d have to preserve it Everytime you update and also I tend to air on the side of caution since the Anking does update tags at times and I don’t want things overridden etc!
Hey man! The decks should be in the comments of the Reddit page. If not, then follow the thread to the newest update as they are constantly improving the deck and updating it! It should be easy to find if your search for Anking :) hope this helps!
Hey Austin, thanks a lot for the video! Just a quick question, when I'm unsuspending the IM cards, do I start doing them from the step 2 deck on the home page? And should I suspend all the other step 2 cards from the other rotations? It shows that I have like 2k new cards in step 2 😬. But I'm afraid of suspending them if they're already cards I've done in step 1 and I lose my scheduling
Hey! Thanks for reaching out-so you should follow the steps in the video and so basically everything should be suspended and the IM cards you can filter out and start to unlock them as you learn. The cards you did for step 1 should remain in circulation if you followed all the steps here! Hope this helps :)
@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks for the lightning fast reply man. Um, the thing is I did all the things you said to a tee, and I'm getting around 5k cards for IM, but it seems like I've done some already for step 1? So once I do unsuspend them, should I do the anking step 2 subdeck or just the anking main deck? (With both step1 and step2 cards)
No problem man! And yes just do all the cards under the Anking main deck since the cards that overlap are still relevant for step 2 and a lot of times the step 1 cards are made higher quality so definitely keep those in circulation!!!
@@AustinNguyenMD ah sweet thanks a lot man. I just went into the browser and suspended all the step 2 cards and I'll start unsuspending them. Even after I've suspended the unrelated cards I've got like 4k cards overdue from step 1, you reckon it's worth reviewing them?
No problem bro! And yep you got the setup all correct, and yes I’d do those 4k cards since it’s content that won’t be covered again in the Step 2 deck so it’s worth while to do 100%. If they already have intervals on them since you studied them prior just try your best, you may be surprised how much you remember but also don’t hesitate to relearn and press again on any cards you forgot! Good luck!!
Bro I’ve watched the video for about 10 times but I still can’t understand it. Is there a way to create decks like in the step 1 deck? That was way easier for me. I’m an IMG so I don’t need these shelf exams or rotations. Thanks
Sorry bro! Anki can be confusing for sure. But you’re in the right spot, if I were studying for step 2, I would actually recommend working backwards from Uworld and unlocking cards from incorrects so that it’s a targeted review and approach. You can always just unlock the cards the way I explain it as you learn different topics from the different rotations, they’re all the same content and cards for shelf as it is for Step 2! If you’re still confused and want more help you are welcome to reach out to my company at www.medschoolpartners.com happy to help!
Hi Austin, thanks for the video man!! I just recently started my 3rd year rotations and was interested in starting Anki. I had a couple of question that I hope you can answer for me. I just downloaded the deck and instead of V9 and V4, mine shows V11 for both step 1 & 2. Does this just mean its just a newer version. One other thing Im a bit confused about is how to do cards specific to your shelfs as you progress through 3rd year. I followed your steps of clicking IM under shelf & minus the "potential dublicates" and "not doing" which ends up about 5300 cards. The part I lost you at is, (11:30 mark) you mention that you unsuspend about 30 cards per day, but mine arent showing up as suspended. None of them are yellow. I hope my question makes sense. I would really appreciate any help!!
Hey man! Happy to help out. Yes, V11 means it’s more up to date so don’t worry about that. In regard to the suspended cards, it’s because you need to make sure every card is suspended to start (ALL YELLOW) and then you can slowly unsuspend them each day or as you learn things through Uworld or in clinic. I hope that makes sense! Either way, you just want to get through everything by the time your shelf exam comes around 👍 Good luck!!
@@AustinNguyenMD Hey, thanks for reply, I really appreciate it! I figured it out!! One other question I had, how do you go about finding & unsuspending cards specific to stuff you learn in a uworld block. Sorry Im a newbie to Anki.
Glad I could help out! Always happy to. I would recommend just searching in the browser key words from the question/educational objective that you got incorrect. Usually you can find cards pretty easily that way once you get use to it! Best of luck with everything 👍💪
Hi! Yes here it is. Please download with media file. Let me know if any issues www.reddit.com/r/medicalschoolanki/comments/swjqzh/anking_overhaul_step_1step_2_version_11_update/?
Hi. Thanks for making this video. I ran into the prob you mention around the 6:50 mark. I have #AK_Step1, #AK_Step1_v7, #AK_Step2, #AK_Step2_v2 as well. What should I do now?
Did you try to “clear unused tags” or do you still have cards in those older tags? If you still have cards in those older tags it’s likely because you didn’t use the update settings for special fields since the card type was likely not overridden properly. Let me know if this works :)
@@AustinNguyenMD Yes, it worked. I thought I checked the correct boxes under "special fields" but I probably didn't. But I redid the whole thing and then removed unused tags like you said. Thank you so much!
yay!!! So happy it worked. These logistical things can sometimes be more confusing and tedious than the studying itself 😂 just happy we were able to work it out! BEST of luck on clerkships, you got this!! 💯
Hey Austin! Thank you for the video, it was very concise and easy to follow! I had one quick question. Did you ever feel that not doing the “potential duplicate” cards ever left you with any knowledge gaps or would those concepts show up on cards not tagged with the “potential duplicate” tag?
Happy to hear that my friend! Wishing you all the best on your clerkships 💯 I honestly felt like it was sufficient and all gaps were covered in other cards or in Uworld so you’ll definitely be just fine! Hoping to get some more videos to provide confidence in this method as I was able to honor all of my clerkships during M3 using just Anki and Uworld! Sometimes less is more and you want to be present and learning as much as you can in the clinical setting so I found it unnecessary to grind OME videos or read any primary text books. Plus, at least you can Anki on your phone easily during breaks while on the wards :) Cheers!
Hey austin, when I updated my anki to the newest version V9/V4 I dont have the same tag appearance/organization that you have in your anki browse. My browse shows every single tag that is available in the deck and is not organized into the #AK_Step2_V4 or V9 tags that organizes all of the individual tags. Do you know why this is happening?
Hey man! I think I have the solution for you. You need an add on called Hierarchical Tags to keep everything organized. I explain how to install this on my video about the 10 best add-ons, and you can skip to Hierarchical Tags following the time stamps in the description -- let me know if this helps!!! ruclips.net/video/goUrNKJMSZs/видео.html
No problem at all and I’m always happy to answer questions! I mean unsuspend the cards when I say unlock. So when you get into your Anki deck, you’ll suspend or turn all the cards yellow and slowly unsuspend them as you learn the material! Hope this makes sense :)
Hi Austin, I am an M3 working on updating my anki deck but I'm running into the issue of having a Step 1 v9 and v11. I protected my "extra" category because I have a lot of my notes from Step 1 in there and don't want to lose them but I have a lot going on in the tags section. Do you know how to remedy this problem? Thanks!
Hey Ana! Thanks for reaching out. I would try to clear unused tags and then if that doesn’t work go into your step 1 v9 and see what cards are not being copied over. Make sure you are using the special fields add on and following all of the steps carefully. You shouldn’t lose the extra if you protect it and theoretically all of the v9 cards should transfer over to v11 and once you clear unused tags the v9 one should go away and then you should be good to go! Hope this helps! 🙂
Hi, you’ll have to download it in the link I have in the description and install it as described in the video on your computer before being able to sync and use it on your phone via the app!!
Hi Austin! Thanks for this helpful information! I have updated my deck to the v9 v4 version, but it appears that I have a tagging issue. All of my step 2 cards are appearing under Anking:: Step 02 rather than the sub titles (cheesy Dorian, medical ark, and zanki step 2). Please let me know if you have any suggestions! I appreciate it !
Hey! Did you clear unused tags? Everything should be under one tag with separate tags underneath it. Don’t forget to press that drop down arrow to see the other tags! Let me know if that works 🤞
@@AustinNguyenMD Hi yes I did do clear unused tags, but the cards don't appear to be going under the separate tags. Would you recommend reimporting the deck? Thanks
I would recommend keeping it all together as when you go through different clerkships you’ll be keeping all the cards in circulation anyways and it will be mixed together like how it was for step 1. However if you want to do the filtered deck I would install this add-on: ankiweb.net/shared/info/861263371 It will allow you to press a button on browser to make a filtered deck based on your queue! Hope this helps man!
Hey Austin. Thanks for the video. I will be starting clerkship in May and my first rotation is family medicine. I’ve been using Anki since the beginning of medical school and have also unlocked a lot of step2 cards during this time. I was wondering if you think it would be best to start clerkships only with family medicine cards unlocked and then as I move to the next rotation continue with family medicine and start the new rotation cards or do you think I should just keep everything going and unlock from family medicine as I start? Hope this makes sense thanks in advance
Hey! Yes this makes sense. I would just keep all the cards going since you’ve already studied them and they’re in the algorithm. A lot of the material just builds on itself and you won’t be studying irrelevant things especially since FM is very broad. I would just keep the cards you have studied for step 2 unlocked, and then start cracking at FM and so on and so forth. Uworld will be the main tool for shelf’s and step 2 and Anki just a nice way to keep the info straight in your head! Best of luck!!
@@AustinNguyenMD appreciate the quick response! I see what you're saying, when I checked all the step2 cards I have going already, a lot of them are cheesy cards, but they're not under any shelf tag. would you say these are valuable to keep going or suspend them? they're tagged with either uworld or amboss
No problem! Filming videos take forever so I try to make up for it by being prompt on the comments 😂 Yeah I would keep the cheesy cards going, some of them may feel repetitive as you unlock other step 2 cards and I’d rather overdo it slightly and suspend cards as I see duplicates than to just not do some! Hope this helps! I think honestly the best learning will come from setting a schedule of doing like 10-15 Uworld questions a day on rotation. I started the first half of the rotation doing tutor mode and just learning from the question bank. Get one wrong, search Anki for a premade card and usually find a bunch about the topic to unlock. Sometimes there aren’t any Anki cards made so I’ll make my own! Last half to last quarter of the rotation I tried to have all the Anking cards done then pick it up and do blocks of questions on timed! Best of luck and hope this helps!
Thanks for the helpful video! Is there any way to make custom filtered decks for each rotation with this method? I tried using the custom filtered deck add-on to do this but for some reason, not all the cards make it into the filtered deck. For example, for IM, only 4000 of the ~5500 cards made it into the filtered deck.
No problem! You could make a filtered deck for each but I just felt that it is more confusing having the cards separated and then rescheduling based off of the filtered decks. The Anking made a video on more detail about custom filtered decks if you want to check that out. I would recommend just keeping everything in the same place and studying similar to step 1 where everything is in one deck and you just go through it each day. I’m not sure why all of the cards didn’t move over, did you input the correct filters for the custom deck?
Hey Austin, I think I’ve followed the directions, but I only end up with 2215 cards in FM instead of the amount you listed in another comment. I’ve been clicking shelf FM, ctrl+alt+not doing, ctrl+alt+potential duplicates, shift resource FM, ctrl+alt+not doing, ctrl+alt+potential duplicates. Not sure what’s going wrong, but I don’t want to miss out on studying 500 cards somehow. I didn’t use the deck for step 1, but I still downloaded both and followed your instructions about suspending the step 1 tag.
Hey Hannah! That is the correct way to do it, I’m not sure exactly why you have 2215 cards, however the number that I have for FM is 1660, so if anything you would have a few extra hundred cards to do, possible because of some card duplicates that for some reason aren’t tagged correctly. I would try to follow the steps again and see if that fixes the card count?
Hi Shannon! It’s very possible these cards were already taken out in the new update :) you should be good to go if you follow all of the other instructions! Best of luck!!
@@AustinNguyenMD thank you so much! and then regarding studying the cards during rotation (like IM), about how many cards would you unsuspend a day? and would you just do it randomly from the IM section under shelf?
Great question! I would recommend doing UW questions and unlocking cards as you learn concepts by searching under the Anking Step 2 tag! Also I like to filter my deck based on “created” and unlock chunks of cards that are related to each other and may do 50-75 new cards a day if I had time! The goal is to get through all the cards during your rotation and as many questions as possible before shelf! You will do great!! 🙂
Hey! This may be one of two things: 1) simple, you forgot to clear unused tags 2) less simple but basically your tags didn’t overlap correctly while updating… did you use special fields add on as shown in the video?
After you select for the 5500ish IM cards, do you know if there is a way to count how many of those cards you have left to do that are still new/suspended? I've tried typing Is:suspended or Is:new to the end of the search but it doesn't seem to work properly. Same thing happens when I try it through a custom filter. The non-new and unsuspended cards are still there in the search?
Good question! I’m not sure if there is a quick way to do it, but I just like to sort the cards based on interval and then highlight all the ones that are “new” to see how many are left over! Hope that helps!!
Thanks for the video Austin, I'm having the issue you talked about in the video where after I do all of the steps to download and update my deck, I still have the #AK_Step1_v7 tag showing up in addition to the updated deck tags. I have tried several times and even re-downloaded the special fields add on but haven't had any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey man! Great question and glad you enjoyed the video. You have to make sure to clear unused tags! If that doesn’t work then there may be a few cards that are still tagged under V7. Do you have the V9 tag as well? Let me know if that works!
@@AustinNguyenMD Thank you for the quick reply. I just checked the V7 tags and theres only 25 cards so I guess they are just a little different? Do you think I should delete them or try and re-work the tabs?
Gotcha! I would just delete them and then clear the unused tags as they’re probably not important cards! And I try to be fast at responding when I can :)
Per 6:40, I followed all the steps but still have the V7 and V2 old tags. When I click on them they have 7 and 1910 cards respectively. Not sure what to do, I went back to an old back and did the process again but it's still the same. Am I okay for leaving it as is, I am using this for step 2
Hi Tamra! Great question. This is likely because you did not use the special field add-on correctly and so all of the card types aren’t the same so they were not able to get updated properly. Hope this helps and thanks for supporting the Channel!! 💯👊
So if we are starting fresh with the Anking Step 2 deck, is there a need to download the step 1 deck or can we just utilize the Step 2 Anking deck (Referring to the part where you subtracted Step 2 cards from the Anking Step 1 Deck, would we just skip that if we're starting new?
Also after subtracting the "notdoing" and "Potential duplicate" decks from whicever shelf/resource subsection, how do you actually go through the cards? Do you make a filtered deck of the cards you unsuspend for the day?
Hey Tayo! Great questions. You still need both decks as there are about 6k overlap of cards so if you didn’t use Anking for step 1 then you would still want to do those cards with the new step 2 cards which make a total of 15k cards! After getting rid of the “not doing” and “potential duplicates” you want to go through that queue of cards using flags and sorting by date created like I did in the video at 8:40! Hope this helps :)

If I do it the way you said won't I have to repeat these steps everytime I open anki?? As I'll have to keep the cards I've not looked at previously suspended and the step 1 cards and step 2 cards will mix...
You will just have to repeat the steps that I outline to filter out the queue in order to find the cards you want for step 2! If you suspend the step 1 cards as I have shown in the video, they won’t mix if you only operate within the “AKSTEP2V4” tag
i'm new to anki (using it for the first time ever for rotations) so i'm confused on what to do after "unlocking" the cards. i think i correctly unlocked 50 cards (they're highlighted yellow) but now i have no clue what to do next in order to review those cards. you kind of lost me there 😅
Hey! Good questions. So unlocking is actually not yellow. Yellow means they’re still suspended. Check out some of my other videos on Anki basics for more info, but once you unlock the cards they should show up blue and you can start studying the cards! Make sure your settings are all correct though 👍
Hmm that’s interesting! Did you make sure to clear unused tags? Also did you make sure to use the special fields add on to make sure that the card type updated properly? Let me know if this helps!
Hey man thanks this was really helpful. I was just wondering if you could list out the approximate number of cards we should have in our queue for each rotation after doing all the steps, like how you told us for IM we should end up with about 5500. Just to make sure everything seems right before starting. Thanks!
This is a great question! Thanks for asking :) I have added my response to the video description as well for any other student starting on a different rotation. IM ~ 5500 cards. Surgery ~ 2350 cards. Family Medicine ~ 2840 cards. Neurology ~ 1830 cards. OB-GYN ~ 1810 cards. Pediatrics ~ 2348 cards. Psych ~ 1248 cards.
@@AustinNguyenMD Hi Austin, thanks so much for this video. I followed your steps to get all the OBGYN cards but ended up with 3532 cards. Am I doing something wrong or can this be the right number for me if I didn't do a lot of these cards as part of the Step 1 prep?
Card count was updated in the description and the most recent pinned comment by me! OB should only be 1213 cards so I think you must not be looking under step 2 ObGyn as even before you remove the duplicates there’s only 1810 cards! Let me know if you figure it out, I’m not sure why it would be over 3000 for you. Even if you didn’t do step 1 it shouldn’t change the overall amount of cards! Sorry this happened to you 😓
Great thought! You definitely could delete them but with future updates to the deck and how tagging may change I would recommend keeping the cards and doing it as I did!
Thanks for watching this video everyone!
Approximate Card Count per Rotation: IM ~ 5500 cards. Surgery ~ 1660 cards. Family Medicine ~ 1660 cards. Neurology ~ 1710 cards. OB-GYN ~ 1213 cards. Pediatrics ~ 1438 cards. Psych ~ 975 cards.

I have watched so many videos trying to figure out how to get rid of unnecessary cards and such. and yours is the first to explain it in a simple language. Thank you so much for this video!
I am super happy to hear this!! Just glad the video can be helpful and I wish you all the best!! Good luck 💪👏
Hi Austin, I am an IMG from Viet Nam. I graduated in VietNam in 2020. I am preparing for USMLE. Nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you! Good luck 👏🔥🙏
Thank you!
Super happy to hear this! Best of luck on clerkships you got this 🙏💯💪
Hands down👏 the best anki tutor!
Best of luck with your rotations!
🙌🙌🙌 Thanks Ekram!!! I appreciate it :)
Used lightyear for preclinical but hopping over to anking for clinical
Thanks for putting in the time to make this guide
Thanks for supporting the channel man! I’m always happy to help out-best of luck on the rotations 🤙
Thanks alot,do you recommend to study from bnb or ome before starting uWorld?because its hard to start solving questions before knowing the material
@@design7836 For Step 1, I would use BNB and PATHOMA and sketchy prior to Anki and Uworld. For rotations and step 2, I would just use uworld and work backwards to find relevant Anki cards to review!
Good job explaining the shortcuts in he browser! So many people don’t know how to ctr shift and ctr alt shift
Thanks man!! Just trying to help out as much as I can!! 👍
Hi austin, how many cards do you recommend to unsuspend daily, does 100-150 new daily can be manageable with reviews?
How many reviews you had daily?
Yes that sounds manageable! It would range from 150-200 a day but depends on how many reviews you do!
I mean i want to unsuspend daily 100-150 new cards,i think the reviews will be much higher daily
I hope this explanation makes sense.
is this deck useful if I am downloading in 2024 to study for step 2?my question is should I follow the same steps u r showing or r there any updates?
Great question! Yes, it is still the exact same steps. The most updated version of the deck is still linked, which is the free version has all the information you need to excel on step two and on clinical exams. Best of luck!
@@AustinNguyenMD thank you
I'd give this video a 300 out of 300! Thank you mate!
Appreciate it mate, means a lot!! Best of luck on your studies 👊💯
Hi austin, did you created flashcards from your incorrects or just unlock related flashcards without creating new?
Great question! I did both. Used premade cards if they were available, otherwise, I created my own!
Did you create new subdeck in anking and add new missed question with missed tag?
@design7836 I just created a separate deck altogether called Qbanks and made cards in that without tagging
Hi Austin, thanks so much for this video, it's been super helpful as a new Anki user! What settings do you usually set for # new cards/day, review cards/day, graduating interval, easy interval etc. Ie what do you change on the options menu from the default settings?
Hey! Happy my videos can be helpful :) I go over all of my settings here!! ruclips.net/video/abGX0SUiaV4/видео.html
@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks so much! Excited to try it out soon.
so so helpful!!! Starting rotations in about a month and using this method to get a head start on the cards :) thank you!
Way to be proactive!! :) Glad I was able to help out, you’re going to do amazing!! I just finished my rotations and I’m working on finishing all of my rotation specific advice videos so definitely check them out. They’re all done beside OB and Peds right now but I’m editing the last two videos!
@@AustinNguyenMD omg so exciting! I definitely will, cant wait for your OBGYN video thats my first rotation so ill turn on your post notifications :)
I’ll be sure to get that video posted before next month!! 🙌 😊
Thanks for the video, what is the difference between this way and the way anking show how to use the deck, are alot of cards will be added here?
Hi! This is similar to how Anking recommends to use the deck as well. This ensures you only do the cards relevant from Step 2 and shelf exam for each rotation! Best of luck.
@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks,I think he get rid of lolnotacop and zanki pharmacology and zanki step decks,do you recommend to do that?i didnt use anki for step 1 and i want to use it just for rotations,
Another difference that you add resources when you click shift,he doesnt do that?
Hi Austin, what do you do to get rid of the not doing cards? I'm referring to what you did at time stamp 14:42. Thanks
Hey! I use control + alt + click to remove those cards!
Hey austin! Thanks for these amazing videos. Super helpful. Was wondering how your set up is now with V10 of anking out? Thanks!
How can i find these related cards based on what?
Abd how many new cards is best to aim each day
You should just go based on created date!
Hey Shannon! Yes that is absolutely correct :) best of luck with everything, you’ll do amazing!!!
@@AustinNguyenMD Thank you for that advice!! Would love to see a video on how you're approaching step 2 studying :D great channel!
Thanks for all the support :) I’ll try to put a video together once my schedule is more stable! Basically I am just doing Anki as shown in this video and Uworld problems specific to the rotation. I’ll keep all of the Anki cards in circulation for the next year until STEP 2. I think that is a good plan!!
is there a way to categorize the cards for review by system or specialty? Instead of having to review everything under the anking deck?
@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks for the help!
No problem! Thanks for supporting the channel :)
@@AustinNguyenMD thank you for your reply man. I did tried this method but unfortunately it didn’t work as well ! :( I am using Version 2.1.40
That’s strange! What happened when you tried to delete the cards?
@@AustinNguyenMD I tried it again and it worked... Thanks a bunch maan :)
@@AustinNguyenMD yes but it's still around that 3500 mark!
That is really strange! I’m not sure why that would be happening. It should be around 5500 cards. Shelf > IM. Ctrl + Alt not doing and potential duplicates. Then SHIFT + Click Resources>IM then Ctrl + Alt not doing and potential duplicates. Is your Shelf IM around 5200 and then Resources IM 6600?
would it be helpful to also just make an additional tag for the ~5000 cards so that you don't have to go through the same process over and over again?
That’s a great idea! I didn’t think about that. I usually just do the hot keys and it’s been second nature to me now so it only takes a few seconds. Only thing with a new tag is that you’d have to preserve it Everytime you update and also I tend to air on the side of caution since the Anking does update tags at times and I don’t want things overridden etc!
Nice video. this reddit page you linked in description doesn't have deck links. how do i download?
Thank you so much Austin! It means a lot! Wish you all the best and success in the future 👊
Thank you my friend! Appreciate it! 💪 💯
Hello So Do you do this every time that you are ready study?
Yes I do! It’s almost second nature and you’ll get it down in no time at all 👊💯
So how do actually study the tags... Like how do I study FM only for exmple?
Hi! You need to filter based on the tags as outlined in the video using the shortcuts. Best of luck 👌
Thanks man! Really needed this video :)
Anytime man!! Happy I could help :) good luck on your rotations!!!!
Thank you Austin!! Also, appreciate the discount code $$. Newly subscribed.
THANK you! I appreciate the support and I’m always just happy to help out 😇 Welcome to the family!
For some reason I can't open the Anking deck Step 2 with media. Can you share link to anki deck below plz?
@@AustinNguyenMD Thank you for everything! Cheers!!!
Sorry I'm new to Anki but what do you mean by 'unlocking' the cards?
@@AustinNguyenMD Thank you! I appreciate your help!
No problem!! 🙂
Hi, I have the Anki app, how can I get the AnKing Step 2 deck?
Thanks
Hmm I’m not sure what’s going on. Are you sure the other tags are not underneath the Step 2 tag once you expand it?
@@AustinNguyenMD Yeah, Ikr! The other tags aren't under the zanki step 2 deck. They're listed all under Anking
When you scroll down on the left side so you see #AK_Step2_v4?
This simple and super helpful 😍
That was the goal 🙌 Happy it could be helpful to you 🙂 BEST of luck on the wards!!
@@AustinNguyenMD what should I do if I want to put those filtered cards in different deck instead of doing the same process everytime ?
I would recommend keeping it all together as when you go through different clerkships you’ll be keeping all the cards in circulation anyways and it will be mixed together like how it was for step 1. However if you want to do the filtered deck I would install this add-on: ankiweb.net/shared/info/861263371
It will allow you to press a button on browser to make a filtered deck based on your queue! Hope this helps man!
Thank very much bro
You bet bro! 👍
@@AustinNguyenMD appreciate it man, thanks a lot ! all the best
You bet 👍💯
I would try to follow the steps again and see if that fixes the card count?
hi Austin, is it strange I don't have a NotDoing tag? I downloaded the latest Step 2 v11 update
I have a Step1_V11 and Step1_v9 deck as well as step2_v11, and v4 decks and I am so confused
@@AustinNguyenMD Oh that's a really good workaround. Thanks for the help! Starting M3 soon with IM too
No problem! Best of luck on the rotations, you will do great! I have a 3 more weeks and hoping to post a Vlog soon!!
So you have to suspend all the cards beforehand, and keep unsuspending as you go?
Yes exactly! Great question. You want to suspend the cards first and then just unsuspend as you learn :) I’d shoot for 80-100 new cards a day!
THis is hella confusing but this video makes it doable
Totally confusing process 😂 glad it was helpful!! 🙌👌
@@AustinNguyenMD Thanks so much for the quick reply. Will try a third time and see
No problem! Best of luck 🙏
Thanks, man! Also, I think I'm in your class lol.
Anytime man! And yessir 👌 glad I could be helpful :) almost done with these rotations 🙌🙌🙌
Don't see the "!Notdoing" tag. Any ideas?
Hey! The new updated Anki likely just already incorporated removing those cards without you having to do the step manually. I wouldn’t worry!

Hi Austin
I'm using Ankin v11
Does the procedure you explained in the video for creating filtered decks apply to v11 too?
@@muhammadyaseen13002 yes it does! Best of luck!!!
Yes it does!! 🤝
Taking medical school soon...
Almost there 🙌
What do I do if my subdecks are not showing up? (for example, my CheesyDorian deck just shows a total of 9644 without any specific clerkship subdecks)
Hmm that’s interesting! Did you make sure to clear unused tags? Also did you make sure to use the special fields add on to make sure that the card type updated properly? Let me know if this helps!
but how do you actually *do* the card and just preview them?
You do the cards at the main screen when you press the deck and start clicking space bar to advance the cards! hope this answers your questions :)
Sorry this happened to you 😓
why dont you just delete the potential duplicate/ not doing cards?
Great thought! You definitely could delete them but with future updates to the deck and how tagging may change I would recommend keeping the cards and doing it as I did!
