Additions: Social skills. Success in engineering is more than math and science and grade. Your communication, outside the box thinking, and leadership skills is what will carry you to succeed in the world outside of college :) Good luck guys!!
Well I don't know. Most engineers have quite repetitive job. Projects are based on some basic product designs and might vary a little from customer to customer. It doesn't have much to do with higher mathematics or physics, or leadership and social skills. It's nothing but a routine, stress management + some creativity (inside the box). Yet it's still relatively decent job and pays the bills. This is the 'harsh' reality for 93.14% of engineers.
-assertive communication skills -management of project uncertainty -emotional intelligence -ability to handle the project blame game -ongoing self-improvement and self-education -ability to deal with internal politics -setting long-term well-defined goals -ability to see other people’s viewpoints -people skills -crisis management All these are crucial skills and habits for real-world engineers, but little or none of them are taught in formal engineering curriculums.
In my experience, many of the students I've had to work with were very competitive. Trying to impress the professors academically and socially. It works, too. Obviously. I'm not sure that's a bad thing either, it just makes it very difficult to work with some of these people. It makes it impossible to be fully honest about problems in the curriculum, project, team, and most importantly yourself. No longer can you honestly admit your weaknesses in hopes of bringing better success to the project. No longer can you ask for help from you peers. Every bit of honesty you put out into my community will only make you look. In my opinion, having to compete in any way other than character and ability is the problem.
This has helped me so much! As a third year chemical engineering student who loves to learn new things outside the classroom I often go to events/talks/clubs. Sometimes I have to miss class or study sessions for this and my friends look at me like I don’t care about college and I am not responsible or commited. The thing is that through this congresses/talks/events I meet so many new, inspiring, eye opening people that help me see the world in a different way. I sometimes doubt myself for missing class however this talk for me was a reinforcement that all of this will be in the future what will set me apart from everyone else carrying the same degree. I can’t thank you enough! ❤️
Glad to be listening to this speech, what he says is true. To do something meaningful, is not about being the smartest or, the more logical is something as complex as we humans are.

Engineering is a role that promotes and relies on creativity, deep thinking, and endurance. People break down your endurance, people challenge you, people and group undermine individual thinking, many oppose creativity and criticize. For those reasons I believe engineers or at least I myself don't enjoy most social gatherings, unless they are with high quality people and we have shared goals.
yeah thinking outside the box and changing thee status quo is not welcomed by all especially when an idea is in it's infancy. It's only when the idea becomes too good too ignore and there is a hype train do people buy in.
Wow, This is amazing. I am a Civil engineer, i just complete BE, but have not start any work until this time But I want to do something which change things in the society in unique and modern to update the life style of our. From this Lecturer, I learn more about Engineering Profession and also Inspiring me, Thank you very much.
Very good video and very very important video. I always felt so alone being communicative, social and interested in multiple other things a person might think is the opposite of engineering for example drawing. But this speech made me feel better. Also to everyone feeling the same right now. Look at some of the most famous engineers. They also didn´t commit their lives only into engineering. They were more. Artists, mathematicians, physicians and studied multiple things
Excellent Philippe! I think that a passionately curious and knowledge thirsting engineer can be great in anything he tries to do, not just his field. What do you think?
I think the one problem with his story is that you always get people that are in engineering in the 1st and second year. After that you get all of the people who didn't get weeded out.
Greetings i appreciate your talk i am an undergraduate student from the university of Buea Cameroun i have come to implement this process but not most believe about it and i was not able to graduate because I couldn't give the As that lecturers need but Input more on realization of projects and practical input if only i could get people like what you said in my community it will be better
Harsh truth: People want to become an engineer without understanding what makes it engineering the first place and its just math and science as they progress
gotta look beyond the age my friend. He has valid point that engineers tend to silo themselves and people tend to silo engineers. Which shouldn't be the case because our job is to make the world better and to make the world better, we gotta understand the needs of the people around us.
The MBA’s nor the consumers don't want to hear any of it, just get the job done and go away with your logic and reasons. The problem isn't that technical people do not want to communicate: the problem is people start yawning and turn away and blacklist you as a social outcast as soon as you mention anything that is not immediately gratifying their ego. They are in vehement denial of the reality that everything is built by us, because god forbid they have to recognize someone's real value. So all we can do is up the rates and move on.
No, it isn't. The only thing you move on are uncontrolable circumstances. Society is flexible enough that it can change. Denying that, is fatal cynicism.
if engineers had the balls, the world would not be the mess it is right now, where the mediocre minds had climbed at the top of the piramid and are running the show with $$$, control and power in mind.
If engineers had the balls they would be at the same level becaus that's how you become successful. people at the bottom because they lack the ability to come out of their shells and open their minds.
Glad to know that there's someone who's on the same page as me in this "engineering problem". Such a passionate speech!

Yes,I'm focusing on these skills additionally in my first year of engineering 😊😊😊
-assertive communication skills
-management of project uncertainty
-emotional intelligence
-ability to handle the project blame game
-ongoing self-improvement and self-education
-ability to deal with internal politics
-setting long-term well-defined goals
-ability to see other people’s viewpoints

Well said. As a future chemical engineer, this talk has given me so much inspiration and new insights about my field.
Great Perspective. I think this idea can be extended to ALL professions too!

Agreed! Very well said :)
I think the one problem with his story is that you always get people that are in engineering in the 1st and second year. After that you get all of the people who didn't get weeded out.
This! This is beyond engineering. This is saying that we need to be better at assembling the parts within our society. So, try to be that change...

I thought just because I don't desire to sit and crunch numbers ALL the time, I don't qualify to be an engineer.... Maybe not....
Thank you so much for this; it was absolutely inspiring.
This was such an interesting video! I like the new take on a profession that should not be set in stone.
Agreed!

I dont understand how a junior face guy can stand in front of a lot of people speaking as he was senior. How long this guy really worked as engineer?
It has nothing to do with engineering exactly. He is a nice guy.

Not a very good idea to sway the camera back and forth like that so distracting... could have figured that one out..
First time ever where I got motion sickness from watching a talk. XD

Engineers can also have pretty big egos. Keeping that in check could help benefit them.
I guess you do too since you're so sure of yourself
