  • The Boy and the Heron is the latest film from Studio Ghibli. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki as a semi-autobiographical film, this animated movie explores some deep feelings of grief, loss, regret, and more. I always want to give you the straight talk here at Modern Mouse so we have to get a bit philosophical and unhinged in order to talk about The Boy and the Heron the right way.

GREAT video, thank you for this. I’ve now seen so many interpretations of what it means to different people that I’ve kinda forgotten what I think it’s about lol. But this was a fascinating interpretation, and I think you’re definitely onto something as far as how he posits on how he’s impacted “the real world” outside of his art.

What's really beautiful about Miyazaki or more abstract art and filmmaking is that the viewer gets to take away what they want. I think I have a clear vision of what Miyazaki was thinking, but my opinion might lean more towards what I needed to take away from it. Regardless, I found the film fascinating and beautiful and I'll be revisiting it sometime down the line when it has an at-home release.

The Boy and the Heron is really Ghibli's take on the concept of extraterrestrial life interminggling with our own. We have seen this concept played and replayed in our news reports and in films, very heavily during the past four years. Especially with governments officially stating that UFO phenomenon is genuine. Then there are the films and Netflix series's. I admit, I was SHOOK while watching The Boy and the Heron, realizing that this was Ghibli's take on this ever-pressing theme!
Everything surrounds the tower that came from a meteorite landing. But it's not random because the only people who can hear "the voice of the tower" are those directly linked to that bloodline. We can see elements of this "other side" actually caring and nurturing "their own", as we witnessed when the new pregnant bride (the boy's aunt) sauntered off into the other dimension via the meteorite tower, to recuperate from her morning sickness. We can see that the rock itself was healing her in that chamber. Evidently, the boy's father doesn't count as being a part of that bloodline. Apparently this can't just be married into.
The meteorite tower leads to a grand hallway from which multitudes of timelines can be accessed. From the beginning, by the way, we see strong indications of how the boy is clever and borderline anti social. He's way too clever compared to the average Ghibli characters (he figured out the Heron was odd pretty early on); and his self-harm tendencies were unabashedly forward (why did he break his skull and did he really have to break it THAT HARD??)
This other world that's extraterrestrial in origin really is just a door provided by the meteorite tower, for accessing multitudes of other timelines, including the dimension of the unborn and of the dead. It's important to look up the symbolism of the Heron in Japanese Shinto and Buddhist beliefs. I'll let you do that yourself, I don't want to take all the fun away. 😉
In the end, the boy had an obligation to take up his inheritance as ruler/gatekeeper of the other timelines and dimensions and as master of the meteorite. (By the way, just to point out his frightening level of cunning: he wouldn't touch the gravestones presented to him by his uncle). Not only is he cunning and clever but he's also distrustful. Good to point out that these would be natural qualities of an extraterrestrial hybrid, though to different degrees depending on personalities.
If I were him, I would have taken it upon me to be the next master of the rock, and do better with that power, allowing people around me to grow and benefit from it.
I hope this helps bring people clarity. 🤍

I just wish Hollywood/the film industry in general would just focus on making stories that need to be told like this
Not just making films for a buck.
There is so much heart missing from this world that when something like this comes along it stands out, purely because so much of the modern world has lost its heart and what it means to really live.
I think thats what I also really loved about Soul

Wow. I really love this interpretation. I have always had issues with Miyazaki because his aesthetic borders on the grotesque. But this analysis helped me better understand what he is trying to do. And the juxtaposition with "Wonka" was quite brilliant. Also, sorry to hear about your loss. I think that the worst part of getting older is that people you love keep going away. Finally, if you like Distiller's Mark, you should give Elijah Craig a try.

Very well told as usual Josh excellent analyzing yea I also didn't get it until the third act either or piece everything together until the third act I had Five Guys before I went to the theaters and all of that food made me go to sleep and took a very small cat nap because the movie was moving very slow but I woke up and was able to follow

I really liked this film and enjoyed it's great it's definitely not as great as Miyazaki's other films but it's still great yea that Heron was creepy I kept saying is it trying to form a Heron beak or a human mouth with it's human teeth 😀 very weird

The human teeth were a bit disturbing. I think there's a subreddit somewhere that has birds with human teeth and it's horrifying. It reminded me of that.

Interesting. I didn’t have much interest in this movie and now I really don’t want to see it if this is indeed the meaning behind it as I think I would feel seen. 😂I’m definitely the type who hides away in his own world and always feel like I have very little impact on the real world, although I do share any art I create online (if you can call it art) hoping someone will get some joy or inspiration out of it.

I have a different feeling about this now than I may have a few years ago. I'll never say what is the right or wrong way to live because that's up to each individual, but for me personally I love to be challenged with films like this. It motivates me to step out of my comfort zone, and in recent times I've tried to think in the same way that Miyazaki might be here. My time on this earth is only for a few decades and I don't want to look back and say that I didn't put my best foot forward in the ways I wanted to contribute to the world.
