Relief Band Field Test. Does it work at treating or preventing sea sickness? My experience so far

  • When I go offshore I was getting sea sick more often than I would have liked. I searched for treatments but traditional ones have not had the best results. I came across relief band and it looked promising. First time out I had waited a couple days before using after charging it which does not give good results. the batteries do not keep a charge even when not in use so you must have fully charged up until you are about to use it. I had gone out multiple times almost hoping to get sick to see if it would work and I'm not sure what happened but I haven't gotten sick since I purchased this... I wasn't wearing it . maybe it was just knowing I had it available in case I got sick.
I had a friend that had already gotten sick. I gave him the relief band to wear to see if it would "treat" someone that was already sick. It did nothing for him. he continued vomitting throughout the day eventually he took it off because it wasn't giving him any relief. so far it has not shown to be worth the $229 spent on it. I will continue to field test it and will make a follow up video in the months to come to give it more opportunities to prove it's worth.

I have the original Relief Band (the one with the ugly powder blue face). I fly cross country (FL to WA) often, and it works like a champ. I've had it 3 years now, and it's the only thing I use. I've heard various reviews that the more modern-looking version you are using isn't as effective for some reason. Maybe it's a form-over-function thing? I find that I have to make sure I have that contact strapped down hard onto the inner wrist, or the pulses won't work well. The band on the powder blue version is stretchy, so you can get it strapped, then pull a little extra to get that snug fit. I guarantee you, that if you use the ugly blue one properly, it WILL kill your sickness. Here's a real-world example: I had a layover in TX, and of course there was shit weather as usual. I ate a big bowl of Chipotle, then caught my next leg to WA 20 minutes later (mind you, I'm not overweight. I'm fit). The combination of the crap food and turbulence caused me to get epic airsick. Worst I've been in almost my life. I put the band on, fired it up to 3, and in about 10 minutes, was feeling far more normal. No sickness. These Relief Bands DO WORK. Just get the ugly-ass powder blue version, and use it properly. If THAT doesn't work for you, I'll buy it off you. I can always use a backup for friends.

you might be on to something. the biggest problem I have is with the band. because it is ridgid getting it to make proper contact is tough. I notice if I bend my wrist in an unnatural position I can get a steady pulse but when moving around and fishing it is far and few between. If I was feeling sick and sit down and bend my wrist to make the pulse felt it takes my mind off being sick. It seems to prevent vomitting but not the feeling of being seasick.

@@Kevtheguitarguy I also live in FL (near Clearwater), and fly with my sister/bro-in-law in their 4-seater plane out of Naples, so I keep my eyes open for preventative/fixes. What I do is eat a plain, boring meal before I go out (toast, eggs, oatmeal - No meat at all. None. Nothing with a lot of butter, grease, etc..them bring some ginger candy and ginger ale. Get REAL ginger ale. Most only have ginger flavoring. Slowly drink that (don't chug it - the sugars and crap will add to the sick issues), and suck on the ginger drops throughout the day, and you should be better off. You'll may still feel a bit off, but definitely without the feeling of needing to vomit. If you're on a boat, getting into the water works to stop motion sickness pretty well when you're feeling crappy. Put on a life vest or suit, then go in (not on a raft, or board). Doing all that will allow you to keep moving on without needing to go back to shore, or quickly land a plane. *** For anyone reading this comment, keep in mind that the Relief Band (and all other bands) stop the feeling of needing to puke - and you won't puke. But the bands only deal with the Vega nerve, which is what's telling your brain to tell your stomach to puke. The actual FEELING of sea-air-sick is originating in the inner ear, which is something NO band will help with, because the Vega nerve doesn't connect with the inner ear. In my case, the vomiting is gone when I use the band, but the motion aspect is kinda still there, but not bothersome. I leave the Relief band on for an hour or two after the flight/boating is done and I'm on solid ground. That gives my body time to adjust. Then it's all good. Back to normal!

@@marks3072 Forgive me, but in your first post you said it it will kick sickness - which I take to mean the nausea you get in the back of your throat. But in the 2nd you say it can only stop you from throwing up. So does this mean the nausea remains? I have an inner ear problem and have nausea most of the time but I never throw up, so I guess it won't help me all? thanks

@@jackcornuto4760 I get a few different levels of sickness from airplanes or rolling waves once in a while, which is an inner-ear thing. The band stops the need for all-scenario vomiting, and also 90% of the gross stomach feel. The majority of the time after the band kicks in (5-10 minutes), I feel as though I just went through an ordeal, but no longer sick. After about 20 minutes, I feel far better, and simply adjust the pulses higher or lower, depending on how I feel. This is all while still flying or boating. This device is solely meant to stop you from feeling sick and puking. BUT, I have tried puking and putting it on after. That seems to work well, too. I can't say of it'll stop dizziness or other symptoms. Buy the cheap blue-face band, and try it out close to shore. If you feel sick, crank it up. If it doesn't work well enough, get back to land, and it ahoukd work perfectly, since the land is steady. I've left mine on for a couple hours on land, which settles me faster.

To give a final update. I was going out on a day that was suppose to be a little rocky. Charged up relief band fully, got it powered on, it would NOT provide any pulses no matter how much I turned it up or down. Only used a handful of times and it's already dysfunctional .

I have the premier one (hard band) and agree the contact isn’t consistent. I have to like wear it loose and hold my arm a certain way for me to feel it. I’m super sensitive to motion sickness and it 100% works for me. Because I know it works for me, I’m thinking about getting the flexible one as people seem to favor it. Also if I’m sweaty, it doesn’t seem to work as well either

I recently bought the sport one with the flexible band. Not only did the premier not work for me, it didn't hold up (already stopped working) haven't had a chance to test the new one yet because the oceans been pretty calm

went out bar hopping, drank way too much. Woke up next morning to go out on boat with another couple. been awhile since I was this hungover. gave relief band a try at hangover relief. much like sea sickness, it did not make me feel any better still felt like I wanted to puke..... but, I didn't. Went out to an Island restaurant and was happy not to throw up in public. What did help is drinking 2 beers. Still think there is a design flaw with the stiff band. the only times I could feel the pulses is if I bent my wrist in an unnatural position. Still have to give this product a thumbs down

for me ? No. but another viewer commented that the one that has more of an elastic style band and is more basic looking works well. The non flexible band on the one I have doesn't have a good contact with the important part of the wrist.

I went out on a fairly rough day still felt sea sick while wearing it but didn't throw up. Overall I'm not impressed. I think it is grossly overpriced. If it were in the 39.99 range maybe I'd be ok with it.
