Hey! First of all these aren’t C. Elegans, they’re actually T. aceti. Good guess though they look quite similar. Obviously, this isn’t a real trial by the CDC establishing the efficacy of hand sanitizer (after all this has already been proven thousands of times in peer reviewed research). This would be silly to conduct research through TikTok/RUclips videos in this manner. Why nematodes? Well for entertainment value and to illustrate the importance of contact time. This video was made during the height of the pandemic. Most EPA registered disinfectants have a contact time of several minutes (this was one video of 50ish showing all kinds of disinfectants). It helped to show people that disinfectants don’t work instantaneously. Though admittedly, hand sanitizer does work much faster than most EPA disinfectants. With non-motile bacteria you can add a disinfectant and watch it continue to be non-motile. This isn’t exactly fun to watch….for most people. Nematodes help people visualize the process to 💀 while being somewhat entertained illustrating that contact time….they swim, twitch, and stop. Not exactly what you’d find with bacteria or be able to see. Generally speaking, if a disinfectant works on bacteria/virus it’ll also work on nematodes. I can’t think of an instance where this isn’t true, but I could be wrong. This is another reason I used nematodes. I agree I could have done a better job explaining you wouldn’t find these on your hands and this was just a way to visualize the effects. I’ll keep your comments in mind for the future and thank you for input!

T. aceti actually aka vinegar eels. Technically, nematodes, not eels. Very harmless and you can find these things when you make vinegar. These are filtered out from vinegar.
Like anything that's smell contains alcohol which does in fact kill germs they could do this test with their perfumes and soaps and it would probably work

Hand sanitizer doesn't kill everything you put it on after you wash your hands it was originally used for medical workers as an additional precaution after hand washing
For everyone curious, hand sanitizers are effective as long as they are at least 60% alcohol according to the CDC. In the US, hand sanitizer is regulated as a OTC drug, which seems a little weird, but it means there needs to be a drug facts label that tells you what the alcohol content is somewhere on the container.
you should show what happens after it sits out after a while. washing hands cleans them but using sanitizer creates a space for growing more bacteria after some time.
What I learned in cosmetology - with sanitizers, they only SANITIZE, they don’t sterilize. Also, they don’t typically work unless they are WET for 30 seconds-1.5 minutes. Better than nothing for sure, but yes you are better off washing your hands thoroughly with some soap and water.
Hand sanitizer has to be tested by the FDA for efficacy before it is sold. At least in the US, hand sanitizer is considered an “OTC drug”. So yeah, it works.
