    i'm an American born Vietnamese and I can attest that it really is like this. My parents have run a nail salon all my life and growing up I worked with them and that language barrier really does exist, more so than many may think. There were countless times where I felt like my co workers were treated poorly because they attempted to understand their customer but the customer wanted to be rude instead. I appreciate that you took the time and got to understand Lisa. It's a perspective that I believe many should be aware of.

      Facts. I worked at nail salon for many years. I worked with Asians, Latinos also, and I hated when customers would talk down on my coworkers. They talk down on people who are bilingual and think they are not smart. In reality, they are extremely smart. The language barrier is definitely a thing. I remember I'd always defend my coworkers no matter what. I worked at some great places.

    Honestly…. This might sound rude… but I don’t understand some of those reviews. I don’t want my mani/pedi tech to make small talk with me. I prefer to say hello how are you and ask what I want and then sit there and relax. I like to literally lay back and enjoy having my mind go blank for a little bit. I have no problem with them speaking in another language to the nail tech next to them. I don’t feel awkward about that. And I don’t feel awkward if they’re silent. To me it’s more enjoyable. Let’s do the math people. An average service is a gel polish service. Price: $18-$35. Fastest time POSSIBLE to apply and cure the gel polish: 25 mins. Owner and manicurist split the cost of a service 70/30 + tips with guarantee of daily minimum wage $15/hr. Maximum hours in a day: 8 hours. Lost time for: Removing old nail polish, clients showing up late, no shows, time it takes for customers to pick a color.. people are trippin if they want a service with a full hand massage and 1 hour time for $20. BTW, they’re using expensive products. I saw Essie Couture and Presto Gel.

    I can't believe one of the review complained about them talking in a different language to each other, they're allowed to talk and socialize to their work mates. I've had acrylic nails done about 20-30 times, it hurts, that's just what it's like.
    Maybe they're getting such bad reviews because they're in a nice area of town? this looks like a standard or above average quality for a nail salon. Lisa seemed nice.

    • @XXxxFlickyxxXX
      @XXxxFlickyxxXX 2 года назад +5

      @Killer Curves when you're getting your nails sanded multiple times and buffed, it can hurt! obviously not to tears or very much but it can be uncomfortable.
      my comment was more on the speaking the other language rather than their quality of work.

    • @WildVee
      @WildVee 2 года назад +10

      Huh? No, that's wrong actually. Getting your nails done really *shouldn't* hurt. Like, at all, any type of manicure shouldn't be majorly uncomfortable let alone painful. I know acrylics are a bit different than gel, but the process itself shouldn't hurt, the most you should feel is some pressure when you get them done, or when the nail tech is curing the gel under the UV light if it's a gel mani. If it does hurt, that's a *major* red flag! That means they're rushing, inexperienced or frankly just don't care and have over-filed your nails. Girl your nails can get permanently damaged if you keep going to somebody who damages your natural nails like that. I wouldn't go back to that place - personally have changed nail techs because of it before, and I advise anyone to do the same if you experience pain at any point

    • @WildVee
      @WildVee 2 года назад +8

      @Killer Curves Tell me about it! And there's even some *nail techs* here in the comments saying the burning sensation is normal and isn't damaging! Like no hunni, drilling your nail so it's flaky literally already is nail damage. Of course it needs to be done so a mani can last, but the drill should be set to a setting that isn't intense and won't hurt. I've seen what some long-term effects are on over filed nails and it ain't pretty
      A tech's top priority should be the client's comfort. I've had techs try to guilt trip me into just "dealing with it" when I said it was painful. Took a while to find one that actually cared! :(

      @@indianaajoness You have a valid point. I think trying to understand the atmosphere of the salon you choose is important in order to align with your needs. Having an open salon and interacting with other customers/employees, you will have conversations going on. Its like a barber shop. And understanding that many of the Vietnamese employees have a middle school level capability of speaking english is important as well. Its tough to speak a second language thats not normal. Its like asking you to recite back to high school Spanish class and have a convo.
      It doesnt hurt to ask what they are talking about. I’ve seen many customers ask and the conversation is fun between all parties.

    I come from a family of Vietnamese refugees and almost all of my mom and her siblings had their own nail salons. My mom faced not only the same challenges that this nail salon did, but a few others, like working all alone in the salon while the liquor store next store was constantly robbed, fearing she could be next. But she did not have the luxury at the time to just quit. She had a family to support. When my family worked our way to be able to let her sell her shop, it was a relief. Even though her shop was closed, we've had some of our closest friends come from that shop. To this day, they remain close friends of our family. I'm first generation Vietnamese-American and I am so proud of our family's humble background. This video definitely is a reminder of the hard work of not only my mom, but the rest of our family who owned nail salons. Anja Cullen You’d know by virtue of the fact that the average person will exploit every advantage you allow them.
      In any event, Lisa actually explains what much of that perception is about. The issue to her wasn’t really the different language. Vietnamese, like many other East Asian languages, varies its tone to change the meaning. English speakers use the same to express emotions. This means that they can sound angry, sarcastic, taunting or whatever while actually talking about something boring. If you spoke like that in English you’d make some enemies.
      That said, many of those reviewers likely earned the gossip that likely did occur. From what some technicians tell me, certain Salon clientele are very entitled and come with hostility, unrealistic demands, and a willingness to scam employees for free services.

    awww! ☺️ they’re so sweet! once in a while i go the nail salon with my mother and while she gets her nails FULLY done, i usually just get a very simple bare bones manicure (no polish) and sometimes a 30min massage as well because most salons where i live do massages as well, and the petite Asian nail techs have some insane strength, i have no idea how they do it haha! regardless of what specific nationality of Asians work in each nail salon, they’re ALWAYS so nice and warm and welcoming no matter which salon i go to. i wish everyone like them! 😆

    Gotta think of Vietnamese salons like barbers. They have conversations about everyday real world things that happen. Add in the fact that the tone of a 1st gen Viet is much louder and we speak with a lot of expression.
    Customers, dont feel weirded out asking what they are talking about. Some employees that have been living there for several years can explain and you guys can join in the fun, but if they cant explain just have sympathy and understand that employee has most likely recently immigrated to the US.

      I hate racist women that go to nail salons. The Vietnamese guy that usually does my pedicures is the best. I chat with him a lot and he’s told me he wishes more people were like me. What’s sad is I’m not doing anything above and beyond, I’m just chatting and being nice. Sad that that stands out to him.

    As someone who grew up with a father who speaks Vietnamese I can say she is speaking facts. The sounds made while speaking the language are nothing like English and can be easily misunderstood emotionally. It’s not just Vietnamese either, if a third wheel in any situation and the other 2 wheels are speaking a way you can’t understand it is so easy to think the worst. It seems like a good business with some snobby customers.

  • @VivekBabbar

    What an amazing episode. I like how Taji concluded the supposed 'rudeness' of the staff due to the language barrier. He said that "maybe it's a projection of my low self-esteem". That's the only reason why a person would think that someone is making fun of them even if they are talking in a language they are not familiar with.

  • @SimBol1216
    @SimBol1216 2 года назад +6

    Lisa's point about the cultural barrier is accurate. There are assumptions people make about us Asians, and when it comes to Asian languages/dialects/speaking mannerisms, there are a lot of differences between the East and the West. In this case they were Vietnamese (Southeast Asian), but South Asians (like Indians) can also often come across as brusque or blunt. (Source: I'm Indian-American)

    This was the best episode yet I've seen from Taji. I missed out on these shows when they were first aired. I like the episodes in which there's a lot of awkwardness (either from Taji, the targeted business, or the effect of editing), but this one seemed more fun somehow. And that's a damn good saxophone for the nail tech's first try at one.
    5/5 would recommend
