What in the world are they talking about? If I jump kick too much in SOR Garcia or the shades guy uppercuts the shit outta me. Meanwhile in Paprium, I can jump kick in place and hit multiple times for way more damage than the standing B combo.
It's been nearly a year since Paprium came out and man... I am so torn on my feelings about it. I thoroughly enjoyed it at first and hearing the game's fantastic music in the background of your video instantly takes me back to that brief moment in time when the game hit all the right notes for me. But gradually Paprium unveiled itself for what it really is: a poorly designed repetitive grindfest. I did a long Let's Play series on YT where I tried to go through all the different paths and show the various endings (insofar as they're actually distinct from each other). That completely burned me out on Paprium and now I can't stand the sight of it anymore. Not to mention all the drama surrounding this title that is still going on to this day, which has soured me even more. The music is still excellent though, honestly it deserved a better game to go along with it.
Its crazy this game is ranging from 500$ up to 1000$ from sellers. I recall someone leaking all the sprite sheets of paprium so technically you could make your own game.
Haha, yes, I really love Paprium, but to be fair, I did notice and I think pointed out most of the flaws on my review xD I think the game is very flawed, but I think it makes up for it with its lenght and level / character / unlockables. Not saying you don't raise good points mind you, if anything I agree with you. Just that this is one of those cases where ironically, I think that even if the quality isn't the best, the quantity makes up for it ^__^
Paprium has a lot of style….nauseating style….but very little substance. If the development story behind Paprium weren’t so insane, then Im not sure anyone would have treated this game with any more hype than any other homebrew. It should be on the Evercade by now. This is a great video by the way. 😊
I made a Paprium video a few months ago calling out similar issues to you. Luis came into the comments pretending to be "just another dude", and attempting damage control. I knew who he was, I called him out... Post mysteriously deleted. He even joined my discord where I gave him the honorary title "WATERMELON SPY". Heh.
I've seen other indie titles having similar gameplay issues, maybe development is more art driven than anything else? Artists wanting to do games that in various cases lowers the priority of creating a solid gameplay (unless they are so into a genre that they understand which level of things you need to have at least to have a decent gameplay). Things made worse by little (or useful) feedback that could push for iterating over the mechanics to create something unique, or long ass development time that rarely is used to polish things up (but to reach bare level of decency because something went wrong over the years).
By far the best video I've seen in a long, long time. In depth analysis with good examples and easy to understand. Also fair, balanced and respectful to people who disagree. Splendid work!
i'm pretty much 100% with this. The game is also kinda glitchy, like the teleportation stuff. Can't say i'm surprised the game turned out the way it did. From what I've heard and played of it, their previous game Pier Solar was rough. Good in certain ways but very lacking in others. Of course, you had many people saying it was an amazing game simply because it was a homebrew game on a real cart, but that's how it goes. i still like the game, just the core gameplay is severely lacking.
Kickass video. Pretty much agree on what makes a beat em up "good/rewarding". Lots of people simply disagree with our outlook considering the SNES is full of cake walk beat em ups (Final Fight 2 and 3) that have hoards of fans. With Paprium I kept my expectations extremely low and they were exceeded. I knew a competent A.I. and balanced combat system would be the hardest things to implement. Like you said graphics, presentation, music, stage variety were incredible and for me Paprium was good enough.
I would still like to play it without having to pay $500-800 on eBay or wait a whole year via Kickstarter. Despite the flaws you mention it seems like an enjoyable game and I love the look and music from what I’ve seen.
I think the game can be fixed, all you have to do is math a rom hack of the game that changes the AI or difficulty. Then patch it with the updater thing on the cartridge. Or once the game is playable on flashcart then just play the hacked version that fixes all of these things.
@@Goati_ Maybe, the woman being dipped by the guy in a suit and tie with a rictus grin has similar armor as the protagonist in Tanzer. I've never seen that cover before!
I think I completely understand why so many people swear up and down on the effectiveness of jump kicks in beat em ups: when you die or continue in a beat em up, you respawn right there on the spot, which means you can eventually power your way through with jump kicks if you're persistent enough. Sure, you won't be getting any 1cc's that way but it will _eventually_ get you to the end of the game, especially since jump kicks are admittedly rather effective on large groups of enemies in most beat em ups. It's a bit unfortunate, because had more beat em ups opted for maybe a checkpoint approach instead, I think more people would realize that constantly jump kicking shit doesn't always work lol. It also kinda leads to a misunderstanding of the genre in a lot of people since you can get your way through most beat em ups just by credit feeding without learning how the game works mechanically. I think Fight n Rage had the right idea, dying lets you respawn on the spot but if you continue you get sent back to the beginning of the current room. It's stuff like that which makes it easy to tell which beat em ups are made by people who understand what makes the genre great versus games like Paprium that were likely made by people with a bit more of a surface-level understanding of beat em up mechanics. Not saying Paprium is bad though, it's incredibly ambitious and technically impressive! It's just easy to tell even by just watching videos that the gameplay is a bit lacking haha Great vid btw, that last segment was wonderful lol
