A wonderful, wonderful (very) short read is Babette's Feast by Karen Blixen. You might know her name if nothing else, from the movie based on her (possible) most famous book, Out of Africa. Babette's Feast was also adapted into a movie that is a fantastic watch as well. Another great short book is The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami; if you can, read the version Chipp Kid designed into a quasi picture book.
Tolkien's "the Homecoming of Beorhtnoth", "the Fall of Arthur", "Leaf, by Niggle" and "Farmer Giles of Ham". Other than Giles, all are poetic, the first two being actual poetry, and ingenious one as well. Those three are surprisingly deep for their brevity and all have multiple layers, and even Giles, being a humorous tale with a bit of satire has more depth than one might think. All are masterpieces. Also Euripides' "Trojan Women" (Gilbert Murray's translation I'm quite fond of) and Colm Toibin's "Testament of Mary" (novella, not the play based on it)
The Old Man and the Sea - Hemingway One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich - Solzhenitsyn Any James Bond book - Fleming Prince and Old Man are good books to read to improve foreign language skills, as the stories are simple, but enjoyable.
Aha I felt I should mention some books I hadn't mentioned before ;) but absolutely if you're going to read any short book make it Sherlock Holmes, always. - Jean
Try these, by my FAVOURITE author, Honore de Balzac: A street of Paris and it's inhabitants ; Madame Firmiani ; Colonel Chabert. ( they're like booklets, and you could actually read all of them in one day).
Have you read Chetan Bhagat??? He is one of the most famous Indian writers. If you get time please read Revolution 2020 or One Indian Girl and give a review on it. I am sure you will not notice time flying by.
I find it impossible not to mention The Great Gatsby. a story i've never been quite able to shake from my mind
Good point! I always forget The Great Gatsby is under 200 pages - Jean
The Little Prince is one of my favorite books. I can't help but cry every time I read it. So beautiful.
Awww, The Little Prince looks adorable and I didn't know A Midsomer Nights Dream was only 88 pages - might have to investigate :)
I know, you have no excuses now ;)! - Jean
