Which character was she on 30 Rock?
Jane has been such a HUGE part of American and even worldwide counter culture with her acting and comedy skills. I have NEVER seen her do less than an amazing job on any show or even interviews (such as todays) where she failed to shine in front of the camera, even on ZOOM. I hope she knows how beloved she, and her characters, are and they will always be historically chronicled and remember by those of us to be the right age to remember those early days of SNL. That was also, to my knowledge, on of the first comedy shows that put female comedians at the same level as their male counterparts. This led to Seinfeld, Friends and 3rd Rock from the Sun, just to name a few off-shoot shows that followed in the footstep of Lorne Micheals genius. So thank you Jane for jump starting a wonder everlasting and truly historic era of wonderful comedy and growth for female comedians as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you forever.
I've been rewatching 3rd Rock and realize how much I underappreciated Jane in that role as a kid. She kills it! She and Lithgow are a comedy powerhouse.

She was so abused by Dick Solomon! But she was such a good sport. I saw the dance episode recently where they were swing dancing then at the end Curtin and Lithgow danced a charming ballroom dance. Lovely.

Gilda was always my favorite (still is), but after reading the SNL History book I gained SOOOOO MUCH RESPECT for Jane Curtain. She was so insightful. And what an incredible career she built. She absolutely is a national treasure.

ChuckAudio absolutely. I first found Gilda as a kid through Haunted Honeymoon, and I discovered all of her awesomeness on SNL and her stage show, but I only knew her with Gene. Heartbroken is a perfect descriptor.

Contraband When she and Susan St. James did “Kate and Allie”, there was an hysterical scene in which Jane is in a closet. We don’t see her. We only hear her voice. Kate says to her something like, “ There are some third world countries that do NOT have wallpapered closets.” I have forgotten her response but I too wallpaper closets and found that scene absolutely the best!

I was going to point out that 70s New Orleans during Mardi Gras was probably the more wild ingredient there...but then I read the other comment you have and, um... I think that guy might be even crazier than a coke fueled, liquored up hedonistic festival from a time before AIDS or social media.

My children who are now 21 and 23 ABSOLUTELY LOVED Conrheads the movie. They never saw where it had originally had come from, unlike their mom who grew up with Jane on SNL. People ask me, which is the best SNL, the old ones or the new ones, and I say, all of them of course. But Ms. Jane, you are a treasure. Thank you for coming to speak to us.

I remember that show! Dan Aykroyd opened the show in character as Jimmy Carter. He was on one of the civil war monuments who’s horse was rearing. He just straddled it and said the opening line. It was crazy.
Tons of respect for this lady. First came across her watching Coneheads back in the day. An original SNL alumnus as well as the Coneheads sketch being one of the first ones turned into a full length film after Blues Brothers.
This show premiered when I was 4 and I have clear memories of watching the original cast. I had bad parents.

I was so taken in by her recollection of what happened in New Orleans. Especially hearing of Gilda.It reminds me of Sandler when he sang about Chris Farley. I think it would be awesome if SNL did a special with past comics such as Jane or Dan Ackroyd and such through the years talking of memories of moments that stick out for them while on SNL. That would be interesting....
But how many beads did ya leave with? Buck Henry had a trunk full by the end.

I'm surprised and disappointed that I could not find the Mardi Gras special to watch anywhere - I was 15 and barely remember it.
It’s currently available as a bonus feature at the end of season 2 of SNL: THE FIRST FIVE YEARS dvd collection. Kudos to Jane and Buck for not losing it as foreign objects bounce off their heads on live television.
I have vague memories of this Mardi Gras special, too. I take it that Lorne will never allow it to be shown on TV

As ABSOLUTELY chaotic as Mardi Gras had to have been for everyone connected to SNL that fateful night back in 1977, it's still INCREDIBLY fascinating to see the show as it actually aired to the rest of us.......and, thankfully, it IS available to be seen in it's entirety, preserved on the SNL complete second season dvd set (and probably elsewhere, too).
As bad as it was for the SNL cast and crew, and now, all these years later, having personally read and/or heard MANY harrowing stories of everything that was going on "behind the scenes" that night that has been put out there by those that were there, it's INCREDIBLE to see how they still managed to air a (somewhat) presentable show !!
To hear the types of stories that Ms. Curtin describes here, you would assume the show that actually aired that night was just a JUMBLED MESS of bits and pieces of the SNL cast members trying to 'perform', while being harassed by the belligerent, drunken crowds that were EVERYWHERE in N.O., but they still SOMEHOW, as bad as it sometimes got, managed to broadcast an interesting show.......an IMPERFECT, ROUGH-AROUND-THE-EDGES kind of show that night, but still, an oddly fascinating one !!
If you've never seen the whole thing, and are able to track it down, I HIGHLY recommend it......ESPECIALLY for the diehard SNL fans who have never had the chance !!

It's a Mardi Gras thing. If you haven't been, Mardi Gras is a (technically Catholic) celebration that is held for about 6 weeks (!!) in New Orleans (and some other places, but in the U.S., it's in New Orleans.) The rowdiest part of the celebrations are during the last few weeks.
It's basically a long party leading up to Fat Tuesday, which is the last day to party before Lent. Anyways - it is a drunken, debauched, naked, raunchy free-for-all. Seriously, it is crazy. Brawls and women exposing their breasts CONSTANTLY. It's... it's something else. They NEEDED a police guard.

Jennifer McGoldrick if you read the SNL History you’d learn she really wasn’t a partier. The book is FANTASTIC.

She was very sensible, very focused", and disliked the drug culture in which many of the cast participated. Show writer Al Franken stated that she "was so steady. Had a really strong moral center, and as such was disgusted by much of the show and the people around it". While the rest of the cast partied after the live show, Jane went straight home.

Lorne Michaels was an enormous asshole who thought he was a competent producer. He wasn't. He is still the reason Saturday Night Live doesn't succeed. The second reason is the idiotic "writer's union" they have writing for the show, that has to vote in new members. No writer is going to vote in a more talented writer than themselves, so they pick writers they feel will never replace them. This guarantees worse and worse writers over the years, and it's been a slow race to the bottom for decades.
Jane Curtain was the classiest member of the cast in my opinion, and she said that the way Garrett Morris was treated on that Mardi Gras show was "very shabby". I saw that show live; Garrett Morris was barely used in it.
If NBC got rid of Lorne Michaels and fired the writing staff, and allowed the performers to write for themselves, the show would improve immensely.
