Connecting the Ronin S to Canon 90d

  • The Canon 90D is now compatible with the DJI Ronin S for follow focus and starting and stopping recording. Tim runs through connecting the camera to the gimbal with the MCC-B micro USB cable. Unfortunately, DJI doesn't provide all the information you need in one place, so I've pieced it all together from the Ronin S manual, the compatibility list (June 2020), a DJI 'How to' video and other RUclips videos for other camera systems. Hope it helps!
    If you want to check camera body and lens compatibility, the current list is here...
    dl.djicdn.com/...
    If you want to read the DJI Ronin S Manual, click on this link...
    dl.djicdn.com/...
    And if you want to check the firmware for your Canon EOS 90D, click here...
    www.canon.co.u...
    I tested the gimbal with the Canon 24-105mm f4 IS II which is on the compatibility list. I then found that the Canon 10-18mm f4.5-5.6 IS STM and Canon 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS STM lenses also worked, even though they aren't on the list.
    Unfortunately, when shooting this video, the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, Canon 35mm f2 and Canon 50mm f1.8 lenses wouldn't work with the follow focus wheel. But you can still use them and the start / stop function on the Ronin S still works.
    Most of the video was shot on a Canon 750D (Rebel T6i) with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, as I was using the 90d for demonstration purposes.
    Please feel free to comment with your experiences, feedback or questions.
    Thanks!

    Hey Tim very useful video thanks for taking the time to share. I got the follow focus to work with my EOS-R but haven't as yet made much use of it. I must admit that I hadn't spotted the focus speed so I will go and check that now.

    This is a great video! You nailed it. I did everything step by step and my focus is working accordingly. I feel like I need to get used to manually focusing without unfocusing as I’m spinning the wheel to focus (if that makes sense) I’m using mine to shot music videos by the way. So my lens was not on the list but it work perfectly! I’m using the canon 18-135 nano lens. Thanks again for this video!

    Thanks for the information. I have just upgraded to the 90d, and using the ronin sc. Seems to work fine, however I am using the canon 24mm stm lens which is great as its small, however not too good for vlogging, due to the 90d crop factor. Apart from that all ok, for gimbal shots. Thanks for sharing. New sub here.

      Great, thanks very much. Yep, unfortunately 24mm isn’t great for vlogging on a crop sensor - I like the look of 14mm for that. But you’ll be able to get some good results for other stuff with the 24mm f2.8, I’m sure. If you do want to vlog check out the video I did on lenses for vlogging and small spaces. Enjoy your new 90d 👍

    Hi nice video, how was your experience with Sigma 18-35 1.8 for video with Ronin-S and 90D?

    • @dslrrookie6808
      @dslrrookie6808  4 года назад

      Hey, Alok. I love the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. I actually bought it mainly for gimbal use, and it’s probably the lens I use most at the moment. The images look great, and the Ronin S can handle its weight no problem at all. I haven’t been impressed with the autofocus when I used it with the Canon 750D (Rebel T6i) - had some problems with hunting, but haven’t really tested it much with my newer Canon 90D yet, which has much better autofocus. Sadly, connecting the Ronin S to the camera with the cable doesn’t allow you to use the follow focus for the Sigma 18-35 at the moment, so you either have to risk using autofocus or carefully use manual focus, as I point out in the video. Here’s hoping DJI will be able to expand the list of compatible EF lenses in future. 👍. What setup are you using? How do you find it?

    • @dslrrookie6808
      @dslrrookie6808  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Naquan. Check out my video on lenses for small spaces - that might help you weigh up the options a bit. The 10-18mm is a solid option for vlogging, but if you’re looking for something with more of a cinematic look, then the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is a superb option. Hope you find the right solution.

      @@dslrrookie6808 well, most of my work will come from filming, though I portion is also dedicated towards photography. I’m trying to figure out how necessary is the compatibility when filming. You mentioned that the Sigma 18-35 isn’t compatible. Would I then switch to auto focus?

    • @dslrrookie6808
      @dslrrookie6808  3 года назад +1

      @@itsnobledean9450 I wasn't able to get the Sigma 18-35mm working with the Ronin S's focus pulling in this video, but apparently, it can be done by changing the focus setting in the camera, and then switching the lens autofocus on. I haven't been able to make a video about it yet, but it is possible, and I've tried it myself. Some gimbal users try to use the lens at a set focus and just try to maintain the same physical distance from their subject or actually use movement towards and away with the subject coming in and out of focus as an artistic choice (especially for music videos). Either way, the Sigma 18-35 is a solid choice for cinematic stuff, documentaries and music videos. Check out YCImaging's video on 'How to focus while using a gimbal'.

There’s been a lot of talk on forums about the 90d’s AF for still photography, and there’s chatter about recalibrating lenses etc. I barely do any stills photography, so I’m not much help on that side of things. I did have some problems with focus on stills with face tracking keep picking up on foreground elements. @@georgeefilms2625 Hi Georgee - so glad you’ve picked up a 90d - congratulations! It’s a great camera. Have you already got the basics down in terms of how shutter speed is set depending on your frame rate, how to use aperture, ISO etc.? If not, you can check out some basics in my ‘where to start’ video... m.ruclips.net/video/fY6zvjkQ_fo/видео.html from about 5:18’ on. There are also some links in that video’s description to a more detailed explanation by Matti Haapoja.
      If you’re already comfortable with all that stuff, and just asking about specific settings for the 90d, I think the only extra things I do is use the custom mode settings for slow motion - mode 1 for 120fps and mode 2 for 60fps (with the equivalent shutter speeds), and make sure that I toggle the information button when setting up shots to monitor sound levels, check the histogram etc.
      Was there anything particular you had in mind? What kind of shooting are you planning on doing? What lens(es) do you use? Would love to hear what you’re interested in.

      @@dslrrookie6808 Yes the 90D is amazing big step up from the 550 in quality and performance i will check out that video for sure
      How do you access mode 2 for 60?
      Planning on shooting a bunch of cinematic videos and pictures of the things i love mountain biking etc.. also probably will do some travel vlogging at some point when i can
      I've got the basics sorted i was just wondering about specifics like which shooting works best log, cinestyle etc.. what you've found works best for a cinematic feel, I use the canon 50 F1.4 ultrasonic and the 70-300 ultrasonic EF IS and a 10-18 EF-S IS at the mo looking to invest in some L glass in the future hopefully
      Also wondered what you use to edit with this machine

      Hi Rahul. Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't have access to a Canon 6 mk ii and the DJI Ronin SC. Hope you figure out how to get your gear working.
