For those who are not familiar with Joe Lewis ( not to be confused with Joe Louis, different champion):
He's widely considered as one of the greatest competitive full-contact kickboxing fighters of all time, he pioneered pretty much full-contact Karate & specially Kickboxing in the US.
Hell, the guy was the inspiration for Ken Masters from the Streetfighter videogames!

Joe Lewis, Jim Kelly and Chuck Norris were full contact professional fighters. Trying to break into the action movie business. Bruce met them all when he was co-starring in The Green Hornet in 1967. (Get it?)
Bruce Lee's first (and only) real fight was November 1964 against Northern Longfist and Xingyiquan teacher Wong Jack-Man. Yes I know all 7 versions of the story.
I also know that after the fight Bruce Lee tossed most of his Wing Chun out the window, bashed Southern Kung Fu as ineffective...

Once again, Mr. Ferry...just because Bruce didn't perform for you, doesn't mean he wasn't what he actually was/is.
A very lethal man who trained for real world combat.
Perhaps he might have lost in a ring...with rules, etc., but in the real world...he would have been lethal, if he fully unleashed himself.
Again...do the proper, lengthy, research and I'm sure you will actually begin to appreciate what Bruce brought to the table.
      Even Joe Lewis recognized this.
Especially after their final clash that ended their time training together...which is why Lewis said that he knew how hard Bruce could hit.

The parallel side thrust kick is unblockable and unstoppable, the only successful way to counter being hurt by it is to side step our of the direct line or leap backwards very quickly. It is surprising that MMA fighters haven't caught on to this devastating kick

    • @Chronicskillness
      @Chronicskillness 2 года назад

Doesn't work very well in actual fighting. Now some do use it and do very well with it, one of classmates is an example, but it takes years and years of serious practice to get and it's still a limited options/situations.
Because you absolutely can not do what Lee does on film. You can't be 2 large steps outside of Long range... and run into a trained fighter as they stand there.
And were you hitting a person who's in a turned fighting guard?
(If you can even hit them because side kick is the slowest kick besides a spinning back thrust.)
You can't use a side kick's best target in MMA: the knee. The other main target is the ribs. You're not getting them either.
Then there's high risk very low chance side kick to the jaw. Because unlike a roundhouse, crescent, whip, spinning heel, moon, and star kicks... you don't have the temple, back the head or cheek. You need to come under the jaw or right into the chin.
Side kick is a follow up kick in a combo where you know how to open a person's ribcage. Roundhouse left kick to head into a roundhouse right kick to head with immediate right straight to the head where you slide your back leg, left leg, in closer as your opponents guard up from all the headhunting you just did... So he doesn't see the quick right knee chamber that's going to your left side... If his left arm is out great grab it as you best him the ribs with the side kick.
Idk. Kinda a pain. But if it connects you're cracking a rib.
What also works but isn't that powerful is flick a rough kick at their head, but your knee never drops. When your foot comes back you send it right out into those open ribs. But I do different. I have it go into a hook/whip kick into the jaw or across the face.
I just don't like the kick. You really have to be in medium to close range to use it and I rather be doing something else in those ranges.
And it's easy to slip/dodge or side step and grab. Person is leaning more with side so easy to take them down. Or a number of other options. If you don't avoid it it's easy to block. Just have to watch it from sliding under your lead arm.
So in my opinion that's why it's rarely seen. You probably see it more than you think too. It's just not remembered because it doesn't pay off.

Jesus...really? Joe turned Bruce down for Way of the Dragon because he didn't want to lose onscreen, then attempted to start his own action career with cringe-classics like Force Five and Jaguar Lives. Here, he or the screenwriter or both lift a scene verbatim from Longstreet and the results ain't much better. As for Bruce and Joe in real life, Lee historian John Little recently talked about an incident witnessed by Ted Wong, where Joe was sparring with student Herb Jackson and almost busted the man's eardrum with a deliberate open-hand slap. Bruce then asked for Herb's gloves and, in Little's words, showed Joe he didn't have all the answers-which, by the way, contradicts his lifelong assertion that Bruce never sparred with him.

seems like it's not just how hard you kick but where you kick relative to the holder. Howie kicked Joe too low (ie his kicking leg wasn't parallel to floor) and bad form with his kicking leg's knee pointing down. Joe kicked Howie with his kicking leg parallel, which gives good power. Bruce in this scene kicked with his leg that rose upwards which hits the holder target more at chest area making it easier to knock holder backward backwards. IMHO Joe's kick would have hurt more, even though it locked like the knock down was acted out.

Joe Louis pretty clearly understood that it was in his best interest to say the things he did say about Bruce Lee and his capabilities. Not saying that Bruce Lee was not a very good martial artist. Just saying that realistically he would not have a chance in an actual fight or sparring match against Joe Luis. This is due to size, strength and for contact sparring in fighting experience.

Joe Lewis was a "point fighting Karate" champion before he met Bruce Lee (which I was fully aware of for 30 years). Joe Lewis began to hate point fighting and train with Bruce Lee around the same time. He ADMITS in several interviews that Bruce mad him a BETTER fighter. He began to compete, and win championships, in "Full contact Kickboxing". AFTER he trained with Bruce Lee. I have some advice for you:
      1. READ and WATCH for yourself before you look foolish (too late now).
      2. Don't call someone a liar without knowing who they are, especially when you yourself does not possess the necessary information needed to support such a claim.

Bruce Lee was just an incredibly well marketed "marial arts film star". A "brand name". A man who managed to make his mark during a very racist time. ANd managed this based on his incredible charisma . The man has no credentials. Unlike Lewis. Lee was super marketable. Why millins today still blindly follow and worship the image that was "Brcue Lee". Had he also been a world champion in Martial arts, embarrassed every big name martial artist in a test of speed and power, beat them all in an "exhibition sparring" match...Norris, Lewis...etc. Had he actually been "untouchable"....THEN maybe...
Should have compared Lee to Chan (Jackie). Both were MA action film stars. Both never competed. Difference? Chan has black blets in a few MA.
