I love Soul Hackers 2, but that is, in part, due to the director. I adore Mitsuru Hirata's other works, including Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Radiant Historia. He also was involved on Strange Journey. Most of the games hes involved with almost always have really strong character interactiond as one of the main selling points, even if overall stories are kinda mixed.
I remember reading about the original Soul Hackers on The GIA back when I was first on the internet in the dial up days (god, I'm old!) and it sounded like the most interesting and intriguing game among JRPGs that never made it to the west. Somehow despite this I've never player SH2 and I don't really know why. I've played a lot of the Shin Megami Tensei series and spin offs and have spent and absurd amount of time crossbreeding demons but I think they only ones I've ever finished are Digital Devil Saga (the first one) and possibly Persona 3. I like them and I think Persona 5 is insanely stylish but I always fall off before the end. With Persona 5 in particular after about 2 mind palaces and an insane amount of demon building I thought I had more than my moneys worth and just stopped.
With all your smt experience it sounds like SH2 might not hold your interest tbh. As a fellow dial-up survivor I prefer to think of our age group as seasoned rather than old 😂
Also I thought I'd say something incase you weren't aware, there's another youtuber that makes content on the same kind of games as you named Backlog Battle. You're name is very close to it and Ive gotten mixed up a few times now especially when your video is just 2 down from theirs 😅
You know, the complaints about the dungeons reminded me of the Chrysler Building in Parasite Eve 1. It is a question that interests me, because those long segments of grinding and the same tune over and over again certainly didn't raise red flags for most players back in 1998.
I remember it well (and still hope for a PE remake one day!). Something that interests/depresses me nowadays is how often I meet someone who wasn’t alive in 1998 😂
Those people have grown up and have families and jobs now. I don't want to spend my 2 hours of free time a day (if that) running in circles in a dungeon because devs didn't know how to balance their game.

Good video, I definitely cant help but to the feel the dungeons and core combat system felt weak and lacking but the characters, atmosphere and story have made me keep playing.
I agree, kind of. I'm playing the game right now, but I feel like you fail to address how badly designed the dungeons are, especially the Soul Matrix. Requiring 16 floors of that with no changes in music or background AT ALL feels like a waste of time. I actually like doing it, though, after work, when I'm in the mood for a lighter game.
I think one of the main things that turned alot of people off, myself included was them calling it soul hackers 2 and it really did not feel like a sequel at all with the change in art style and it being personified. and paying full price for a game with mixed reviews in the 70's was too steep of an asking price. Having recently played it when it was on a sale i can say i enjoyed my time with it and its not as bad as alot of people made it out to be. I had some gripes with the game but like with alot of jrpgs, if the story is good i can overlook the shortcomings and i appreciated the more adult take on the story both in overall narrative and character interactions vs teenage angst must save the world that was in p5 basically lol.
Unfortunately I already know it isn’t. Ringo deserved a better game. They should just make her a dlc character for each Persona/SMT release now. Because i’m not trying to play Soul Hackers 2 at all.
At first i was excited to buy this game cause i'm a big fan of megaten series. But after watching gameplay video on youtube and review i decided to skip this one. Character design is good since it's Miwa shiro but the gameplay feel like a reskin of persona. Bit the biggest drawback is that there is no new or unique demon in this game. Not to mention some demon and satan is paid DLC (if it's SMT apocalypse satan i don't really mind but it was regular megaten satan).
