Black electrical tape wrapped around the outside circumference of the shoes will hold them together so you can install the spring, and reassemble the clutch. Once assembled, simply remove the tape. No more popping shoes.
A trick on re-assembly I did was to put a large hose clamp (or double clamps strung together) around the shoes before putting the thin plate and snap ring on. It retains the shoes nicely. One benefit of these clutches is unlike the maxtorque- these can get locked onto the shaft tightly by the drive shaft end bolt. The xtra tension helps keep the key intact. Mike
Watch max torques assembly video. It takes the "if you are good enuff / fast enuff" out of the equation and you will go at the whole thing alone more confident. This is a great video. Not trying to knock this guy cause it's obvious he is honestly being helpful.
Great video! I needed the help improving a C clutch. Was going to put a torque convertor on it but my parts supplier said that the clutch was better for my application. I am building a 212 drag mini bike/show bike. Thanks for the video.
That's pretty impressive I've never seen anybody put a clutch back together like that and make it look so easy. It's easy for me, but I have a trick. I could never put the clutch back together the way you did it with out some serious aggravation . I put the shoes and the springs together facing down on top of the plate you had on top. And then I mash the other plate with the fins on it into the piece holding the shoes. Then I grab a couple of small C clamps and clamp it togethe, before I put the lock ring on. Otherwise they blow up in my face as I'm trying to put the lock ring back on.
Max-torq has a similar video on how to modify a standard centrifugal clutch for racing. He cuts all of the shoes in half, and takes 2 loops out of the spring and says to only do the modifications on a new clutch, never a used one. As a side note, I'm building an old kart for my niece, the first one I took over for her and her brother is too long for her to reach the pedals, a centrifugal clutch is the last item I need to surprise her with a new kart, and I'm on a stay home dad budget, my kids kart is already finished.
What works the best is to make that piece of crap spring perfectly round. Goes together so easily, you even start enjoying swaping the clutch shoes or spring itself. It also catches at much lower rpm because the spring is not dragging
Predator engine in a go cart for my son been having it for a few years it has a 13 and a half predator engine but no drive train did have a 30 series tourque converter but not big enough for that amount of tourque so it just went threw belts so did away with it it calls for a 40 series but haven't been able to come up with extra funds to acquire it but this project is extremely important to me cause it was something me and my brother was working on to get going for my son and my brother here recently pass away so I wanna finish it for him basically cause it was something we was working on together
I just finisd putting a 6.5 hp honda motor in a mini bike and it has a brand new clutch. And it just smokes the clutch I'm gonna try this modification and see what happens. If you wanna send one cool I'm probably gonna need one.thanks.and I have an old briggs and stratton engine that the shaft is 7/8 or 1 inch the Honda is 5/8 and I can't swap the the clutch from engine to engine
I'm trying to run a 13hp gx390 in my yerf dog 2 seater with 23" tires I wanted a 40series but they don't seem to come with a backing plate and I have no idea what to do
I'm late to the party, sweet vid, how did you make clutch fit on predator shaft, 5/8's clutch doesn't slide on, any information on how to do it, is very much appreciated TIA 🙂
Maybe you can help me out: Just purchased a go kart with a 212 predator 6.5 hp engine. It has a centrifugal like the one shown on kart in this video (i believe it has 10 teeth). When we first ran it, it ran like crap. But once I cleaned out the gas tank and replaced the fuel filter, tore apart and cleaned the carburetor (removed the jet ran thin wire and carb cleaner through all the ports) put it back together, and finally replaced the plug with a recommended High performance non resistor AR3910x Autolite plug, it ran amazing with top speeds of 35 MPH. I'll be honest, I don't know much about live axels, centrifugal clutches, sprockets, or torque convertors. The live axel has a 60 tooth sprocket Question: Is there anyway that I can gain more take off power, especially like in grassy areas?? It will take off pretty decent on pavement, but once it's in the grass or making turns, It takes awhile to get going. I know the centrifugal clutch on it is wobbly ( like really wobbly) rusty and loose... maybe it's not engaging or slipping during take off??? So would replacing the clutch help with more bite/grip when during take off?
Better pro tip, remove the sproket out of the bell and flip it upside down, sit everything in the empty bell and put the shoes and spring in , then put the top, c clip, and pull it out; then put your sprocket back in the bell and stick it all back together; also I use a 1” piece of pvc for the C clip and hit it with a mallet
Where do u get all ur parts from? Like the clutch in just beginning to do my own builds starting out with a go kart but need help finding a good place to get my stuff from
You want very low rpm engagement right? Would be the opposite of my mods, so going with a lighter spring or stretching out the stock one. Any engagement that low will probably stall the engine pretty quick though

When getting ready to put your cut down spring back use a large hose clamp around the clutch shoes to hold them in place to get rid of the popping out of the shoes.
Hey thanks for all the videos very interesting and helpful I am building a motorcycle using a schwinn bicycle frame and a Honda 11hp engine sure could use a clutch that would fit a1" crankshaft
Just a guess, wasn't installed correctly. I've got a 212cc predator degoverned that's been running the same centrifugal clutch for over a year, I'm 6' 160lb and the clutch helps me run along about 40mph all day long, I ride it 3-4 times a week and push it hard.
I'd say no, but I'm running a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard Vtwin 479cc 16 hp in a Massimo Baja Warrior MB 200 minibike and if I give it much throttle at all on take off from a dead stop it slips horribly even with a new clutch. In fact going up my buddy's driveway wich has a moderate incline, from a dead stop actually made my clutch visibly glow red until I reached the top where it leveled off ,I let off the throttle and the clutch grabbed and then began to cool down. I had to immediately disassemble it and re lubricate the needle brgs which had cooked every bit of the high temp lube off of them.
Cutting then makes more points of contact when centrifugal force pushes them out. You cannot cut the ones on top of the hole in back plate or they drop through 👍
That's a nice clutch I can use it on my my invention got a quadcycle quad front with crouch rocket rear end with a 12 hp cast iron Briggs and Stratton motor of a generator
My clutch in my minni bike I got moped tires and rims it looks like a baby chopper fat tire and all clutch has a lot of slop and it’s exactly like the one u have

@@DirtGearTv thanks for the feedback, I have a ct200u ex, and I’m getting an 18 tooth clutch with a 50 tooth rear sprocket, at 4500-5000 rpm, with 19 inch tall tires, how fast will that go?

Also it is really beneficial to lap the brass into the center tube. This will greatly reduce friction and make things a ton more smooth.

Sounds like a fun project, good luck!
Just a tip, run some electrical tape around the outside of the shoes until you get it reassembled

A ZIP TIE around the shows will help with putting the spring in, an extra hand

Probably a damaged or loose spring not allowing it to not fully disengage. I’d try replacing the spring first
any idea of how to make the clutch ingauge at a lower rpm?
Yes you would just use a longer or softer spring
@@DirtGearTv Thanks!

Could it have gotten grease or oil in it? Sounds like contamination. If no contamination can try a softer spring to engauge at lower RPM
