Attended this school in Charlotte. Still named JH Gunn and there is a community named for him adjacent to it. Adding this video to the school's attendees FB Page. They were aware growing up of the source of the name. Fell in love with music at this school as did many community members. Sharing this bit of knowledge for all who find this video. Be blessed
@@debbiewhite8770 I am the granddaughter of the man who was the lead organizer, Lawrence Orr,in establishing of J. H. Gunn. I would like to connect with you to share information about the documentary that has been produced about his life and the establishing of J.H. Gunn.
Found the video. I absolutely love this recording - Sheets Tolbert is the alto sax who is so impressive. Gunn is a fine pianist, think Otis Hicks on tenor sax, trombonist may be the legendary "Slats" old Harlem musicians spoke of. Wow - nice video!!!
In Charlotte, NC, where Jimmie Gunn was from, there was a school for black students during the era of segregation. It was called J.H. Gunn School. Few, if any, of us knew who J.H. Gunn was, much less that he had been a fantastic musician with great band. I learn of him from a post on the FB page Charlotte: The Past and Present. Our heritage is richer than most of us know.
You are so RIGHT, Teresa. Is it true that the school has been renamed ? Does it even still exist ? I'm so glad that you made the "connection," because Mr. Gunn left us an amazing musical legacy - along with many other accomplishments, I"m sure.
I would venture to say that this band is quite obscure, Gordon, unless you happen to be a fan of 20s and 30s music, as I am. Their rendition of this tune absolutely SLAYS me.

Thanks so much for your kind comments, MandaE365. I wasn't certain if the school still existed or not, but so glad to hear that it does ! Be well !

@@debbiewhite8770 It appears it's still functioning as an elementary school, as stated by MandaE below.
The trombonist is John Orange. Thank you for posting this. I heard about it, but could never find it.
Well done Debbie. Are they neglected? I’ve never heard of them before. Wonderful ensemble playing and really evocative photos you found. Thanks a lot.
