- Testing the autofocus and audio in an outside test-shoot and comparing the new Tamron 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 to the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM.
I used the Sony A7iii as the main video camera. The Sony A7riii and the Osmo Pocket was used as additional cameras. Sound for the test was recorded on the Rode VideoMirco and Rode Lavalier GO.

Some Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM lenses seem to have a focus pulsing issue when in AF-C (continuous auto focus) mode and stopped down to f/4 - f/16.
You can find more information about Sony’s lens focus pulsing issue on these forums:

and here a quick video by Luke Szeflinski showing the issue too:

Thanks for running another test comparing these lenses!
Thanks Mark.

I have got the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM because it is second to none ! I do not need aperture 1.4, but I do need the best sharpness, the best resolution and very good color and contrast for fx landscape photography making very large prints.
The Sony 24mm 1.4GM is a beautiful lens. I’m glad you like it :-)
@@MarkusSenior I hope for a Voigtländer 24mm APO-Lanthar Lens.
Hello, I just watched your video. I live in Latvia and bought a second hand Tamron 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 today. If you ask me, it has great performance for the price. I use this lens with Sony A7C and I am very satisfied.
Thanks for sharing. Yep I like it too. Especially also how light it is. My son will take it on a 2650 miles hike, on the PCT this summer and he chose it due to the size, weight and quality of the picture. Stay tuned!
Cheers from LA.
@@MarkusSenior thank you Markus,I would like to share a little information with you, a new lens costs 230 euros in the sony store here. I bought it for 150 euro. The seller bought the lens from this store for 250 euros last year, and the lens has 1 year Sony and 4 years Tamron warranty. what more could i ask for. I will be waiting for new videos.
For whatever reason I just saw your comment. Thanks for the update. Looks like you got a great deal.
Hope you were able to shoot some nice pictures in the meantime.
Cheers from LA.
The 24 tamron does seem to be wider -another video reviewer also said this. I actually think the tamron performed just slightly better than the sony. I actually got the lens yesterday night & just tried it out for AF (interior 1000iso) on the a7r4. It was accurate and the clicking sound was there - it gave the impression that it was not so smooth as the native sony glass.but probably I could change the af settings to see if that makes a difference. I was a little concerned about the barrel distorsion but software corrections are now inbuilt & even some very expensive lenses rely on software profiles. Anyway I see this as a component of digital imaging. Thanks for the test.
Thanks for your comments Giti.
I really like the Tamron, especially for that price. As I like to go hiking and backpacking, weight also matters a lot. Last year I left my Sony camera a few times home, just because of the weight. Sad… hope this will change this year :-)
Have fun with your new lens. Cheers from LA … and Happy New Year to you!
@@MarkusSenior Thanks for the lovely reply. I understand completely as I feel the same & no longer want to carry heavy gear. And for many kinds of imaging one does not need a heavy ultra fast lens. I have been using the tamron for the last 2 days now & its been better than what I expected. The AF is for the most part very accurate & I hardly hear the sound - neither is it intrusive . The macro gives very intersting perspectives & makes the lens very flexible. One can take fine detail and yet on the other get complex spatial perspectives. The same with outdooor landsacpes - flowers - intricate architecture - artworks. On the R4 the detail is amazing so one can easily crop - work with reframing - perspective - macro becomes 1 to 1. I also think that these lightweight lenses that are good for the pocket & the body actually brings out the potential of the lighter mirrorless line. I use the samyang 45/1.8 (even lighter & greatoptics) - one goes into my jacket pocket so hardly feel the weight. That way the wide and medium range are covered - wish you too a wonderful new decade full of creativity - health and beauty (from New delhi)
Love your video, testing, lot info I got from this, I subscribed your channel! ❤❤
Thanks for the sub! Interesting Channel you have yourself.

For $800-900 AUD the Sony G lens has a lot of focus breathing?
Yep it has. The GM lens is only AUD 800-900? It is much more here in the US.
Check out also my other video ruclips.net/video/o61u74gCIMw/видео.html . Here you can see the focus breathing better.

I bought tamron 24 mm for sony a7 IV and I have a problem with autofocus in recording video, it's doesn't work. Af-c automaticly turns on MF mode and I can't change it. Somebody knows how to fix it?
I had the same issue. Tamron came out with a firmware upgrade that fixes this issue. The new firmware works great with the A7iv.
Cheers from LA.
Tamrom's behavior seemed a little better than sony's
I agree... BTW, it was pretty bright and the auto focus did not use phase detection rather the slower contrast detection.
does the lens works on sony a6000?
Just saw your comment now. Yes, it should work… but please be aware that the A6000 is an APS-C camera so the 24mm will be like an 36mm lens.
Happy New Year.
Picture Profile ?
Just saw your question now. Sorry for the delay.
For my tests I have the Picture Profile set to OFF.
Cheers from LA.
Tamron is best
Yes, the Tamron gives you a lot of quality for the buck ;-)
Cheers from LA.
Why IS the Tamron 180€ and sony 1500€?
Good Question. the Tamron is pretty good, sharp, and very light.... just a little bit loud if you are a video shooter relaying on auto focus...
My son will take it on the PCT this year. Stay tuned for content.
Cheers from LA
hi.I have a a7iii.I want to buy Tamron 24 mm f/2.8t u like autofocus(speed).I'm videographer.I work event and rap clip.
I like the Tamron 24mm f/2.8 a lot… but if you like to use the internal mic or add an external mic to the top of the camera… you will hear the autofocusing noise. If you shoot outside and have the mic a little bit to the side or have a lavaliere mic, then you should be fine. As for autofocus speed, it is slower than the Sony 24mm GM… but then again, there is a huge price difference…. For this price range, it is a nice lens, very sharp and with decent autofocus speed :-)
Now that said, I just recently got the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G lens and will make some videos about it too… but if your budget allows the price of the Sony 20mm… it is worth to consider it… as it is very sharp and the autofocus performs for me better than with the Sony 24mm GM… for almost half the price ;-)
Let me know what you chose and how you like that lens when you get it.
Cheers from LA.
