- The Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers & San Antonio Spurs have all surprised the NBA in this very young season. Many expected these teams to tank for the prized prospect Victor Wembanyama, but it appears that they're aiming to make some noise in the Western Conference. In this video, we examine whether or not this is sustainable for these team & the underlying reason for why each team is playing so well up until now

But I do think people genuinely thought the Spurs and Jazz would tank.
Unlike jazz and blazers, Spurs have zero all star players. The biggest contract on the team is McDermott at 13 million. Lilliards contract is bigger than the entire Spurs team combined.
Yes, we've seen what's happening in Utah, we've seen what's happening in San Antonio. These teams found out Wembanyama missed half of last season due to psoas injury. He may have a short-lived career in NBA. So yes, these teams are gunning for Playoffs instead.

@@lucaslonchampt613 He will have some major injury at some point, NBA players won't just watch 7"5 made from sticks do anything they will brutally play him physically and there is nothing he can do until like 4 years of well planned body building. The idiot team that gets him and thinks that well just put him on food supplement and to the gym will help...no, that will destroy his athleticism and just overall all his skills that he is showing now. Building Victor will be long long many years until he is fully the potential they think he can be and that is only if he doesn't explode his knee, ankles, whatever major injury is constantly problem for NBA players.

Nice video, you can easily revisit this point once again when we get to 30 games played and if still some of these 3 teams are in the top with major wins than losses. I truly start to believe Jazz will finish this season with very high win column. One thing many don't understand is that Jazz main players are already NBA experienced players, they know the brutality of 82 games. You could call Jazz team experienced team, when Spurs & Blazers running a lot from just young players energy and that has always fallen off when the season goes on.
What? 4/5ths of the Blazers starting lineup is over the age of 27. Gary Payton and Justise Winslow on their bench are both vets. Sure, they've got young guys, but they definitely are a veteran led team.

I thought last season was crazy when all the stars getting hurt and it was almost all bench play. But, this season is nuts good teams struggling with drama, and on court play, andvall the while the supposed weaker teams on fire. This is why basketball is fun lol 😆 love the video.

Personally I don't understand the hype over Wembanyama. The dude is a freak no denying that, but what happens if he injures one of his legs? He's only gonna get longer and an ACL going when you're that young will *seriously* affect your development as a player. Idk it seems like a gamble just IMO

Honestly, why should they tank? They are loaded with picks from other teams. If anything, they should be trying to win as many games as possible so that they can shove those teams they got picks from further down the standings and therefore higher in the draft.
Spurs only have their pick and a Top 16 protected from the Hornets for 2023
Jazz only have their pick and the least favorable pick from Rockets/Knicks/Sixers, whilst all the teams are shaky this year it is most likely best case scenario they will get a 8th seed pick so like 15 or 16 and the T-wolves pick but lets be real they making the playoffs at least unless gobert dies or something

@@Reeso wolves pick could be lotto and is unprotected. Too early to say if wolves will stay healthy and figure out how to play as a team. They have talent for sure so maybe it’s 18th or higher. Could be a top ten.

Ye but as OP said "why should they tank" the picks the teams get in 2023 won't get them Wembemyamba which is why teams trade their whole core. Perhaps if they want to win a chip it's worth it to win but they won't get scoota or Wemba by "shoving those teams as far down as possible"

Team is playing well but all you needed was half a brain to see they'd be in the mix for a 4th - 9th spot. The west is wide open. Spurs are the biggest surprise here.

I’m so against tanking. It’s never been LESS worth it to tank, even with Victor W. The best chance you have as the worst team in the league is 14% to get Victor. 14%. Is that worth it to give your franchise a culture of LOSING? Think about the amount of talent the Sacramento Kings have wasted by having a losing culture.
“Championship or tank” is idiotic. Think about it. How many teams can realistically say they have a shot at the title this year? Six? So we should have 24 teams trying to out-lose each other? Lol. If you like basketball, you want EVERY time to try to win every game. Period.

Tanking doesn't lead to championships. Never has. That's why these teams are not tanking. Their owners want to win. Owners that tank don't care about winning as long as the team is profitable against the bottom line.
I don't blame the NBA analyst on the 2023 opening though, if someone predicted this we can confirm they come from the future and cheated the prediction. Cavaliers 5-1? I know Donovan is good, but this good? Many other teams played out of my expectation as well (Lakers 1-5 isn't).

You know tanking has gotten so bad where you go into any given season and project certain teams to just be gunning to go and lose all the games. Like sheesh it's the NBA. You have to think these young guys on those "tank" teams have a point to prove and they want to win games lol. Tanking should never be something you immediately set out to do. I lose respect for those kinds of teams. The sixers did it and I've held a disdain for that organization ever since. And look at them now its failed miserably. All teams to begin the year should be aiming to win every game. Tanking should strictly be a thing you pivot towards mid season when it becomes obvious or more clear where your team may end up. Even then I still dislike the idea of purposely losing games for the mere chance that a certain prospect is gonna become this hero for your team.

Wenbanyama is just a hype
There is hype but it is justified as he can play and shoot and is very young. Him and scoot have proven there abilities just recently. The issue will be can they stay healthy. Scoot is built better and tall guys can get injured and never recover. They will both be drafted one two for sure. We will not know which teams and ranking doesn’t mean much after the lotto changed the rules. Some teams will get lucky for sure.

p.s. I vaguely remember which season it was, but a couple of years ago orlando started 8-2 and "expectations" were high. they ended with around 35 wins in the end. So, don't overreact is my advice :P
35 wins could get a team in the play in. Just pointing out that when you start got it often makes it hard to not make the playoffs.

As opposed to what? The NFL? The MLB? All major sports are purely business now. I’d argue that the NBA has held up better than any other major league. Being on bottom 4 they have 15-20%(forgot the actual %) getting #1 pick. Even if team fail to get #1 pick they still have 20% chance to get #2 pick. Both wembeyama and scoot are projected to be franchise player with wembeyama a generational talent.
You have 30-40% chances to get top 2 picks which is crazy.
The problem with Jazz in HISTORY they don't have exp or embrace in idea of tanking that's why they don't value to tank. They always in the middle in the pack. Jazz being jazz, they prioritize more fun to watch team for lottery team.
