they want to do "their own spin" on the yakuza franchise and actors were asked NOT to play the games before recording, even though the actor playing kiryu really wanted to. It's kinda worrying
I had a slightly longer reply as to almost every reason a lot of people have issues with 8 in particular, but YT ate it. Too long, didn't write again version: There's a lot of little question marks that seriously add up across the game, and a lot of hasty or absent explanations lategame that makes it feel like we're missing half a chapter. And a few moments feel out of character or lacking the impact they should have. Also the date drags the early game down, especially on subsequent playthroughs. Despite these issues, the biggest problem people have and the part I have to fully type up again is how repetitive the story is. Japan side with Kiryu starts as a character deep dive but almost immediately shifts into "dick around Ijincho/Kamurocho until the Seiryu call us up or their Vtuber trash talks us again", while Hawaii starts well and ends pretty fucking rad, but the middle is a lot of "Hey we're looking for Ichi's mom/the Palekana child" > "These people are also looking for them/have them let's infiltrate them" > *fight breaks out* > "well they didn't know anything/got away... hey these people are also looking for them" repeat again and again. Add to this that as cool as fighting a cult *is*, the fact that they completely consume/fold in all of the other factions the moment the Ganzhe boss fight is done really wastes the potential of those other factions.
I have some different reasons for disliking the game but your points are fair too. I felt like the game did a disservice to a bunch of characters, felt like it was just repeating aspects of yakuza 7's story but they did it poorly, ending felt rushed with all the characters in the bar just SAYING "oh this happened" instead of showing us (akane and lani are already gone? tomi talking about helping palekana...would have been nice to SEE a scene of that, chitose joining her family's company etc) and plot twists that have no reason to happen (THAT character death....why?? seiryu guy is ichibans brother only for that to go NOWHERE)
What are the red flags you saw about the yakuza show?

I agree about the DLC, Sega is getting out of hand. This game takes place 6 months after Like A Dragon 8
glad to see someone else who feels the same way
Wich story did you hare, just yakuza 8 in general?

just infinite wealth
I agree the turn based combat is really tedious
