- The Clean live @ The Powerstation, Auckland (1989) "Point That Thing Somewhere Else"
"The Auckland show at The Powerstation was sold out, with fans snaking out and down the footpath outside. I only just made it in the door by cutting the line, something I hadn't done before and haven't done since.
Writing the concert up for Waikato University student newspaper Nexus, I noted, "From the opening 'Dadadada ... daddada ... da' of 'Fish' with its shards of reverbed picking and white noise strum, The Clean took the capacity crowd down a rollercoaster of extreme treble nostalgia. The guy standing next to me collapsed three songs into the fray ... yep, it was that good." The set also featured some of the 15 new songs that The Clean had written." -Andrew Schmidt.

Shot on a Sony V8 camera I think, not sure how the sound was recorded, probably camera mics. (Audio has been tweaked a bit in Adobe Soundbooth).
amazing show RIP Hamish. your were a cornerstone for me
My favorite song for riding down the Parks Highway here in Fairbanks, Alaska. Love this 1989 version and sure miss Hamish.
Vehicle is a masterpiece. These guys were/are shamefully under recognized.
RIP Hamish ♥
Tramways in Wellington was much smaller but we enjoyed dancing to The Clean with Chris Knox after his set.
Wow. Dément.
This was the time of the great reunion and the recording of "Vehicle" -- one of my favorite-ever records. I saw them live in London during this period (89/90). They played the classics, new stuff from Vehicle and also some tunes that would end up on the next LP "Modern Rock" and David Kilgour's "Here Come the Cars". Around that time Robert Scott and the Bats recorded "The Law of Things", another favorite and classic. Not being from NZ and having never even been, was amazed at the stuff coming out from that scene. Have been following The Clean and the Bats and all related offshoots ever since!
Thanks for posting this brilliant clip!
For some reason purchased Vehicle by the Clean on cd in1990 on a whim....What a brilliant album.....
Would have loved to have been at this show
This needs to be turned up to '11'
Michael Stevenson : Yep.
Ive watched this dozens of times over the years, always hits home. ELECTRIC. MOTORING. What does he say at the end? "That's the short fucking version" in a northern Irish accent?!
He says "lost a string, won't be a minute."
Most excellent. Just discovered Surf City, which made me think of this tune....
awesomeee
very joy division esque! so its briliant
and the Velvet Underground!
Gosh I can’t imagine why Yo La Tengo considers them a huge influence. Oh wait, this song.
Nice. Thanks for posting.
Fucking awesome.
That’s how you do it
RIP Hamish.
Blistering!

Not HD, as it didn't exist back then. Pretty sure it was a Sony Video8 camera (analog, not digital) and it's either built-in camera mics with level turned down, or sometimes I would borrow two Nakamichi shotgun mics and point them into the PA, which would give a good sound. I don't have exact tech. info for you on this occasion.
