- This is video #08 in my playthrough of Super Mario Bros. 3. The final world, World 8, is Dark Land. It is a hellish world with all manner of Koopa fortifications. There are only two numbered stages, but there are plenty of other challenges here. At least if you get a game over and have to continue, the fortifications that you demolished will still be gone.
The first challenge is a division of tanks. This stage features a sequence of tanks armed with normal cannons, Bob-omb cannons, and Rocky Wrenches. At the end, Mario must defeat a Boomerang Bro. A bit of a let-down, actually. At least the foe drops a Star Man.
Next, Mario faces the Koopas' navy (time index 2:14). This is pathetically easy. Mario can actually swim in the brackish water underneath the ships! This is a great way to avoid damage. Boom-Boom awaits in the final ship.
Mario moves on to the second section of Dark Land, which features the Hand Trap stages. In the first (time index 4:09), Mario must battle Hammer Bros. of all varieties. Projectiles such as hammers and fireballs are helpful. The prize for this stage is a Super Leaf.
In the second Hand Trap (time index 5:11), Mario must cross a Podoboo-infested lava lake. The prize is a Super Leaf.
In the third Hand Trap (time index 6:19), Mario must cross a lava lake with Flying Cheep-Cheeps. There is oen trouble spot if Mario is in a big form. The prize is a Super Leaf.
Next, Mario must face the Koopa Air Force (time index 7:05). This stage is a prime candidate for using a P-Wing. Otherwise, Mario must cross a flotilla of fighter craft moving quickly across the screen. The supreme commander of this air force is another Boom-Boom.
The third area of Dark Land is as dark as night. The three "normal" stages of this world are here. First, Mario visits Level 8-1 (time index 8:37). With raccoon powers, this stage is quite easy. Mario just has to fly up to the top of the tall pipe and collect three 1-Ups. Then, if he dashes to the exit pipe, he can fly clear to the goal.
Next is 8-2 (time index 9:40). 8-2 can be pretty easy under the right conditions, too. The quicksand pit will lead to a shortcut where Mario can collect 100 coins! Where he emerges, beware of the Venus Fire Plants.
The heroic plumber next tours the Fort (time index 11:08). This particular fort is a bit complicated. Mario can swap freely between two parallel rooms, each with different traps. Be careful of the convery belts. Fireballs will be of great help against Boom-Boom.
In the fourth area of Dark Land, the final obstacle before Bowser's Castle is a second tank division (time index 13:38). This division features cannons, cannons, and more cannons. at the end, Mario must defeat the final Boom-Boom.
Finally, Mario has reached the front door to Bowser's Castle (time index 15:13). I will feature two different runs through this place. First, Mario will go through with a P-Wing. The P-Wing opens up an interesting option. When Mario reaches Bowser's chamber (time index 16:38), by flying up onto the left-hand wall, walking on it, and then dropping back off, Mario will prevent Bowser from shooting fire! Then, it's a small matter of letting Bowser fall through the floor. Really easy.
Then, Mario does a second run through the castle with the Hammer Suit (time index 17:50). This castle requires great care without the P-Wing, especially when navigating the lava pit before Bowser's chamber. Notice how Mario leapt slightly towards the second platform and then pulled back to draw Bowser's second fireball. Unlike in Super Mario Bros., the fireballs are always fired in the same pattern here.
With Hammer Suit hammers, Bowser is not difficult to defeat (time index 20:14). Hooray!
When Mario enters the room after Bowser, some humorous final dialogue is shown, and then we are treated to a whirlwind tour of the eight worlds.
As I have said, quite an enjoyable game. This is one of the best that the NES has to offer. The graphics are good for the NES, play control is superb, and the levels are generally well designed. I hope you have enjoyed this playthrough as much as I have enjoyed making it. Merry Christmas 2013!

Lol I love how careful you're being with your Hammer suit. You know how precious it is
You made the Koopa Air Force look like a cake walk. That level is beyond brutal, speed scrolling wise.
For some reason I had a (much) easier time with that level than the other three autoscrollers... probably *because* of how fast it scrolls (so it doesn't take forever to get to BB).
I knew how hard it was beforehand, and it took me 2 or 3 tries, but I managed to do it mostly by luck, narrowly avoiding cannonballs and burners.

However, World 8-1 and 8-2 courses are VERY HARD if you don't have a racoon suit and get the flight meter just right. To this day, this is, in my opinion, the best video game ever made.
I was probably 12 or 13 years old when i finished the whole game and beat the King Koopa dragon. Now I'm almost 36yo yikes. Thanks for this video! So much memories of me and my lil bro trying to finish the final world! I miss my childhood!
If you use a P-wing during the "air force" stage, keep yourself within view of the screen. Flying above it there is some invisible object that if you hit it, it causes instant death.
I did that but never died. I was able to use it in all 4 vehicle stages, even with the last one having platforms above.
It happened to me once on the final fortress of world 7 when using a P Wing also. Something out of view hit me at the very top and made me fall in the lava. It wasn’t a ghost either. 🤷🏼♂️
I never experienced instant death using a P Wing on the Air Force stage. In fact I was able to tail thwack the Rocky Wrenches while flying off screen.
@@williemakeit2346 I finally beat it in one of the "500 in 1" consoles where they have a bunch of games loaded in their ROM. Mine could have been glitchy? Once I got Bowser to jump through the bricks, the victory music never played and I was just stuck there with a stopped time. I haven't made another attempt to beat the game.

Harambe Da Gorilla I can’t remember. There’s a level in World 7 where you can go in a pipe to get the Hammer suit from a power up block, as well as getting it in the Mushroom House.
The power-up reappeared in Newer Super Mario Bros Wii and controls great. Other than that, I don't know another Mario game it is in.
@@calebdonaldson8770 technically in Super Mario Odyssey you can make use of that power by controlling Hammer Bros, it's so satisfying to throw hammers in 3D

I just made it to world 8 and I’m dreading starting it. I grew up in the 2000s playing NSMB on the DS, and I have to say this game is so so so so so much harder than that. It’s a blast but it’s also such an insane challenge. Amazing game
World 8 was really scary when I was a kid

I think the first Castle in the Dark World is why I like Zelda so much. When I was kid playing the level it was extremely hard and confusing. There is even an area you can get trapped and have to wait for time to run out so you can start over. I don't know if its Nostalgia but I have a certain joy when I play that Castle now. Now I love confusing dungeons in Zelda way more then linear ones like Bowsers Castle is. Although I do think Bowsers Castle in Mario 3 is better then Bowsers Castle in Mario World nothing beats the confusing dark world first Castle in Mario 3
second one was the hardest for me.
The two worlds are the hardest. I played through this game after watching this video and world 8-1 especially stop feeling like "fun" and begin feeling like "work."
@@namesolonggood1sgone 8-1 isn’t a problem since before you get to the hard part of the level with all the bullet bills, the game hands you a one-up. Same can’t be said for the second level which is a nightmare. Sun and multiple piranha plants on slopes and constant precision noteblocks. At least I preferred using those over going for that horrible p switch between the piranhas

I'm trying to beat it with the Mini NES but the Air world is a pain in the ass (I had 42 lives and lost most half of them there!), and level 7 is so freaking difficult, I barely arrived to the last world with a few useless items and lives :( I think I'm gonna start again, last levels are insane and I'm going to need the P wings. Thanks for the playthrough, lots of memories, this is my second favourite Mario Game (Mario 2 is the first lol).
I remember being wowed when a childhood friend of mine showed me that it was possible for Mario to swim underneath the boats in the second stage.

thanks to your video i finally beat this damn game. playing on a keypad on a cpu too. it makes for an insanely hard time. i got all the way to the final castle on stage 8 and i saw how u beat bowser and it made for a nice boss fight. good thing i had a few p wings left. lol. who would of ever knew to duck and u wouldn't take damage from bowser? crazy. that 8th stage is absolutely ridiculous man.
I find this game to be much harder than super mario world, mainly because you cant go back to previous levels for powerups and lives, so if you lose all your powerups, you can not get them back

My favorite levels from Dark Land were the sea ship, the first hand trap (with hammer bros and all their variants), and the fortress. That damn Air Force level was hell.
After 12 years of trying to beat this, I’ve finally did it!
8-1 is a dark World 1-type level, 8-2 is a dark desert level… and that’s it. Sometimes I wonder if there were supposed to be 5 more regular levels in World 8, all themed like 1 of the previous worlds as well (8-3 would be a dark water level, 8-4 would be a dark Big level, etc), but the developers just ran out of room/time. This world could have been so much more legendary than it already is

I never got past level 3 as a kid without the warp whistle. Now I am finally on world 8, and I hope to beat it. I recently bought a SNES Mini. Super Mario World is easy in comparison to this game, but they’re both classics. The nostalgia is insane!
I did beat the game but on the GBA. What I dont understand is the warp whistles. You pay for a full game, why would you skip fucktons of levels. Kind of defeats the purpose of playing a game if you gonna skip it

My dad always used to struggle with this game back in the early 90s, and he sometimes managed to make it to Desert Land and paused the game during the night - then my little brother would reset it in the morning and start from the beginning, lol.

I usually warp past the latter half of 5 and then past the very end of 7. It depends on how much of a bloodbath 6 becomes if I tough it out or not.

To me, the NES version's color palette makes the levels look much more bleak and much more ominous, especially with the music not having as many instruments as in the remakes.

The only time I was just stumped was in 8-2. I had a feeling there was a passage under the first patch of quicksand, but when I reached the bottom I thought it was a bottomless pit. So I went back up. Turns out, making precise platforming atop bouncy note blocks, with an Angry Sun trying to kiil me, was just a bit too much for me to handle it. P-Wing time, then. And I'm not sorry.

It was definitely the hardest World 8 for a long time. It used to be my hardest, but then NSMBWii came along, and I think that one is harder. Each level having a trick to speed though makes the Dark Land seem a lot easier in hindsight. Still a good challenge.
The actual 1 and 2 levels are by far the hardest in my opinion

I first beat this game at age 13 in 1993. Now, at 41, I cannot get past world 2 anymore lol. I guess my reflexes are GONE!
Using the warp flutes and a couple of P-wings, I used to beat this game in under an hour. I can't believe how long it has been. World 8 really, as someone else put it in these comments, took me back to my Vietnam🇻🇳 lol

Oh man... I used my 12 last lifes in the Bowser castle. When I arrived to my last life, I was hopeless. Bowser hit me, I lost my raccoon tail and tiny... but, luckily, Bowser hit the same range of bricks... Last move or game over... Win ! Damn it, I was making the retro archievement, I made each level, I'm happy to beat the game finally. I was blocked in the first part of world 8 when I was kid... But I think I hit the first castle... that horrible castle haha. The Browser castle is "piece of cake", but no extra life (I think) and no coin... mmh !
Okay, I cheated, I found your video, but I finally explored all the castles after several failures (I'm expert for this hehe).

The thing about the ending... If you continue to play it starts you over but with all P-Wings as power-ups. I am doing it now but I can beat the game now but never got close to it as a kid.
Question: on the second portion of the game where there are 5 levels, are the outer and middle levels the only playable games? What about the second and 4th? I ask because I once saw a screenshot of this game that appears nowhere in the rest of the game; I figured it would be these if they were playable.

At 2:42, what is the trick to being able to swim in the lava without dying. I used to always try it but then die.
You have to swim directly underneath the ship, but not so deep that you go off the screen. It's tricky because you can't see Mario. Try to get underneath the ship when it is at its highest.

I had no clue you could beat Koopa with the hammer brother suit. I always let him fall after he crushes through the bricks.

How do you have the hammer brother suit? All I have is the frog suit.
There's a guaranteed hammer suit in the Toad House unlocked by 6-5 (oh yeah, that one level that loops endlessly and has the most confusing way to win), and some other level has a room with a hammer suit block.
I decided to do an any% speedrun on this, so this was really helpful!
At some points I did not understand what to do and you helped me very very much. And in the end with bozer I had no idea how defeat him and you helping me again and it's the first time in my life that i finish a super mario game so your help it is historical for me and for you so thank you very very much again. Plus that I did not know that Mario could fly with the suit with the tail and the hat with the ears. And I learned this from you so it is again historical this help for me.
Me and my dad were in world 8 and my dad beat Bowser in world 8 finally then he jumped and falled down .-.

@@rayray3960 Fly between the two Bowser rooms. From the first, to the second and then back to the first. For some reason this makes the game put Bowser in an "easy" mode where the lower half of his body won't cause damage and he won't spit fire.
@@namesolonggood1sgone yeah, this guy takes advantage of glitches too often. Swimming under lava, flying over EVERYTHING, and using that two room glitch with Bowser. What a cheat!
