Interesting video... I like the comparison and contrast with the Cutty Sark blend... I have not had a MacAllan in a very long time. The last time I had some, and that was nearly two decades ago, I had not yet acquired the taste for sherry maturation. It will be interesting to try it again after having been awakened by an innocent little bottle of Glenfarclas 15, which gave me that Aha! moment...

Thanks again FQ! Oh I hear nice things about Glenfarclas 15. It's funny the first time I tried sherried whisky I thought something was wrong with the bottle. I enjoy them now! I think bourbon matured is my fave then peated then sherry. But they're all nice haha. Those Aha! moments are what it's all about..
      Cheers

Martin is a great guy and great ambassador. Hope this shows up in travel retail so I can grab a few. I still have 5 bottles of the old 12. If you drop by in Singapore let me know. Be Glad to open one up for you. Cheers.

Thanks for commenting! That's very kind of you - in fact I'll visit a friend there before too long. Hope you find one soon - it's a great lesson in wood effects.
      Cheers,

The numbered Macallans are still readily available in the US. You beat me to this one. I recently received a bottle of this. Cheers buddy, good work.

Right I forgot it was only us in North America going without. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!

Thanks for the video. I recently found this at my local store and like it a lot. Also, the original 12 year old is readily available where I am (Michigan).

Glad to hear you enjoy it! Yes I gusss it's just Canada that was left out in North America(probably Mexico too)
      Thanks for tuning in,

Macallan 12 is readily available in Kansas, but, quite honestly, it's nowhere near as good as it once was. It's still enjoyable, but it seems thinner than it was, and it has lost the thick mouth-feel.

Greetings Frank - I think I've only had a modern bottle of the original 12 -wish I could try an older one. I agree on the thinness. I forgot the US stocks the sherry matured - i wonder why Canada was left out. So it seems only Asia and USA get the sherry line.
      Merry Christmas to you!

WhiskyWhistle - greetings to you too. I wasn't trying to be overly harsh on Macallan as I do like their products, but I just think that for less money you can get better whiskies with a similar taste profile. Tamdhu 10 is an excellent example IMO. Cheers!

It's on my list! But we should be harsh so as to draw a line they won't dare cross. Korea's an example of the failure of consumers to reject 'low abv whisky' which is now flooding the market. 36.5% - and everyone's in on it.
      Let's hold fast!

Great review Mark. Very cool you got to meet Martin. He's been a great resource for me over the years with my old HPs. He's also a fellow member of the HPAS (highland park appreciation society). I'd like to hear your thoughts on the Mac 12 year compared next to the 18 year. The profile on nose and taste is very similar based on your opinion of the 12 year. I personally am not a fan of the 12 but a huge lover of the Mac 18. I emote similar profiles as you do on the 12.
    Cheers brother

Thank you WH! It was cool, just short. I'll corner him next time on camera. I will see what I can do - I'll see if I can find the 18 for a reasonable price over here. That would be a cool comparison - the same juice with 6 years on.
Happy Chanukah! I'll probably chat with you before but in case I forget.

Hi Mark, a couple of months ago I found this bottle at the equivalent of 40 usd, I bought one bottle. I haven't opened it yet. Did you liked it more than let's say the Balvenie 12 double wood?
    Great video!

hi Manuel, thanks for commenting. Sorry for the delay in my reply. That's a great price! Now I've only had Balvenie 12 DW twice over the last year, one of which was for my review of it. I wont go back and check the score, but I certainly enjoyed both of them. Perhaps Mac DC edges Balvenie out by a point or two. I find Balvenie 12 quite thin at 40 percent, but Macallan is somewhat headier at the same ABV. I hope that answers your question!
      Cheers,
      Mark

very nice review. I am curious how you compare the Double Cask 12 to the regular 12 score wise.
another thing I noticed is that your audio level is always very low somehow. you might want to turn it up a bit.

Thanks for commenting! How about that I gave them the same score. 87/100. What you lose in sheer sherry punch you gain in complexity of flavour.
I'm going to try speaking louder to start - the ambient noise in my house is part of the problem I think. I'm going to upgrade my equipment in the near future. Please bear with me on that!
      Take care and Merry Christmas,

Mark, Thank you for reviewing this but you know this should be produced at a higher strength and that Macallan are, yet again, taking the piss. They do it because people buy it and they can make more money. There are many Malt Whisky companies every bit as good as Macallan going in at 46%. There is no shortage of spirit at Macallan and they can do this at 46%.

Hi WT thanks for your support as always! I totally agree it should be minimum 43 and ideally 46 or 48 ( as should Glen X,Y,Z...) which is what they used to be. Sure, it's about the bottom line - and they try to blame it on anything else. but one cool thing is their cooperage in Spain. They've invested huge into wood so my fingers are crossed they'll beef up the bottles before long. But yes I'd probably reach for a bottle of Glenfarclas or Glendronach for a sherry fix.
      Merry Christmas,
      Mark

I should add that I just got some Macallan Edition 2. It does have a decent ABV and it's okay but I think there's better for the money. Anyway, It's been a pleasure watching and conversing with you this year. Merry Christmas
