I love the use of black in watercolor like this when I see it. I know it upsets the purists, but historically black and white were used in watercolor. This painting is absolutely lovely.
I’m so happy to hear that you liked this painting. It was sure a lot of fun to do! I enjoyed having the black be the feature color for a change, it’s definitely not the norm when it comes to watercolors! I think I’ll have to paint something else using it though! 😊 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment today. Take care!
Hi Liesl, it’s happy Thursday when your new tutorial arrives! I love this striking painting!❤ It’s amazing how the Paynes Gray brings this painting alive and bright! You are a beautiful artist and a great teacher! Thank you for sharing! Helene
You are just the kindest person. 🥰 I hope you know how much I appreciate you! Your positivity and support means the world to me. Have a wonderful day my friend. 💕
Yay! Congrats on finishing the transparent flowers! I hope you had fun with them. 🥰 This one is also a fun one to try. I’ve had a silhouette painting in mind for quite a while now, and finally sat down and did it! 😊 Thank you for everything Maria, I appreciate you very much. Happy painting my friend. 💕
I truly hope your painting turns out well for you if you decide to give this a try, but more importantly I hope you have fun doing it! 😉💕 Take care and happy painting!
@@lieslsartisticstudio thank you Liesl..I tried it last night and I'm so excited with the result!! Doesn't look as beautiful as yours, but it is the best one I have done so far and it was so much fun! I'm new to watercolor and have a lot of practice to do. I have watched a lot of tutorials and yours are much easier to follow. Thank you so much for your excellent instruction!
Yay! 🎉 I’m so happy you enjoyed creating this and are pleased with the results! Thank you so much for your kind comment. Have a wonderful weekend my friend.
Wow Liesl! Another beautiful composition! I love the depth you achieved with the light to dark! The sun setting in the background works so well with the silhouetted florals and grasses. I love the paynes gray/ivory black combination. Do your paints have a high granulation? It is so striking as you said! The florals certainly stand out in all their glory! 😊💕
Thank you Laina, I have been wanting to do a silhouette painting for a couple of years now and finally got brave and gave it a try! 🥰 I use M. Graham & Co. paints, and I believe a few of the colors have some granulation, but most of them actually are not very high in granulation. (I do think these dark blacks and the ultramarine blue may have a little more though.) The textures of the paper and the light and shadows from the window make it look more granulated than it actually is…. Thank you again for your continued kindness and support! I hope you have a lovely day! ❤️❤️❤️
You are vety talented! I am just a beginner, but this wonderful piece makes me want to work even harder at mastering watercolor! Thank you so much for the inpiration!😊
Aww, 🥰 You are so kind! I’m so happy to hear you liked this piece. Thank you for your lovely comment today, it truly means a lot. I’m so happy you’re giving watercolors a try! They are so much fun. ☺️ I wish you the all the best in your watercolor journey! ❤️ Have a wonderful day!
Welcome to my channel! 🎉 I’m so happy you’re enjoying my videos so far. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment today and I look forward to hearing from you more in the future. 💕 I hope you have a wonderful day, happy painting my new friend.
Thank you so much for your kind comment. I hope you do give it a try! This is a fun one to do. ❤️ It’s always a joy to hear from you. Take care my friend.
This was a fun one to do! I hope you give it a try. 🥰 The original paper size is 9x12, I believe I cut this one down to be 8x10 though so I could put it in a frame. Take care!
Liesl, this is so pretty. I'm going to try it as soon as I can. I love your artwork, and I'm especially thankful that I found you. My husband just had eye surgery and he goes back in three weeks for the second eye. He had a cornea transplant. It will be for both eyes. Take care, Liesl, and enjoy the weekend with family.🖌🌺x
Oh my goodness, you and your husband have been through quite the ordeal!! You will both be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope everything with his surgeries turns out well. ❤️ I am so grateful for the skill of competent doctors so that things like this can be done to help people. Please take care and know that I am in your corner. 💕Hugs!
I totally understand! I myself still get nervous about starting certain paintings, sometimes they don’t turn out and I paint them over again until I get it right and sometimes they turn out better than I thought it would! The key is to take the plunge and give it a try. 🥰 The most important part of painting is just having fun with it and enjoying the process. It’s also ok if it doesn’t look exactly like mine. I often can’t even paint the same thing twice and have it look the same, but that’s ok, your own unique painting style will shine through! ❤️ Some people find my Etsy outlines to be helpful, they say that having an initial outline to use as somewhat of a guide helps them get started. I hope you give it a try! I think you can do it! 😁 Take care my friend.
You’re so sweet! I’m not so sure about everything though, 😉 I am still learning a lot myself, but I do enjoy sharing what I learn! Thanks for everything Ralph. Have a great day!
Hi Liesl. I use the same brushes. They are very good and the price is so reasonable. You come up with great ideas that even I can try and maybe succeed in. I just want to say I’m subscribed and happy to be. God bless! ❤
Welcome to my channel Linda! 🎉 I’m glad you like to use these brushes too! I agree with you, they are decent quality brushes for a very affordable price…what could be better? 😊 Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I look forward to hearing from you more in the future. Take care! 💕
@@lieslsartisticstudio Thank you! I will happily be here to watch and comment. I’m 72 and after years of painting acrylic, I am now taking on the challenge of water colour painting. It’s harder and more expensive than I thought but I’m enjoying the challenge! lol Take care!
I love that you are going to give watercolor painting a try! 🥰 They can take a bit of practice, so don’t get discouraged if it takes a little while to get the hang of it, however, they are SO much fun!!! I think you’ll love it! 😊 They have become my favorite medium to paint with even though I wasn’t very good with them at first! I wish you the best of luck on your watercolor journey and I am honored to have been a small part of it. Happy painting my friend! 💕

I know that folks can see the pencil drawing is very light on your work, but you know, you need to explain that to beginners or they'll be sad when their pencil lines show up if they leave them as dark as your demo. I know you made them that dark so folks can see what you're doing, but they are never that dark on a painting surface. However, dark outlines are not necessarily a bad thing. You can trace those lines once the painting is dry and give a completely different feel to the painting. If you want to take the outlines (whether or not attached to the painting) and define them, you can draw them with a Razor marking pen. Has a small tip and is water soluble so that you can add shadows while still seeing the line. One of my favorite marking pens because the color is blue, not black, when wet. There are very few shadows that are black. Most are blue or purple or the darkest green. Don't believe me? Order a cake with black icing. Take a bit of that icing and pull it as thin as you can on a white paper and you will find it's dark green in most cases. I asked about birthday parties, cake icing, and pepto, and every time, it was one of these and the blood test was negative.
Even though I didn’t mention it in this particular tutorial, I often do show and/or explain how to lighten pencil lines, but I don’t do that every time because a good majority of my viewers have heard it many times before. 😉 In fact my most recent tutorial painting Black Eyed Susan’s is a good example of this explanation if you’d like to see. ruclips.net/video/FA_HDLPN8lU/видео.htmlsi=Uxt8rKSRqDrEYkv2 As far as shadow colors, I am aware they are often not black, I had an extensive coarse on shadows at college, but because this was not a realistic or botanical piece I chose to do it this way because it created the effect and look I wanted, which is the joy of creating artwork…really anything is possible in our own little art worlds! 🥰 Shadow colors are derived from and are affected by what color the light source is as well as the color of the object the shadow is sitting on and the reflections of objects around…..they all play a significant part which is why shadows are not always the same color for everything every time. In fact, we created a RED shadow in that art class once by using a Green light in a dark room with a white object and table, quite fascinating! The reason frosting is more of a green color is because the main food die colors they use to create or mix black are lots of blue and yellow with a slight touch of red, and as you are probably aware, blue and yellow mixed together creates green. Color mixing is also very fascinating to dive into! I love it. 😁 Thanks for watching!
Beautifully done. I love these types of paintings, so relaxing and fun. Watercolor is the best!! I love to watch others paint to inspire me to try new things in my own art.
Thank you so much Pam. ❤️ I enjoy painting with acrylic and oil, but watercolor has definitely become my favorite medium! I love painting with them and trying out new techniques. I appreciate your lovely comment very much and I hope you have a wonderful day! Happy painting my friend. 🥰

Having a hard time colors not blending into each other no matter how long the first layer dries. Is it the paper? I see you use 100%cotton. Im using 140lb pressed non cotton.
Hmmm, I’m not sure exactly without seeing it myself, but yes, it could potentially be the paper, 100% cotton is good at absorbing and soaking the color into the paper where non cotton can sometimes cause the paint to kind of just stay on the surface. It could actually also be the brand of paints as well, some paints (usually non-professional grade) have more of a “reactivating” quality to them, meaning that when the paint gets wet again it actually becomes more liquid (similar to when you first painted it in) allowing you to be able to lift or even move the paint around. (Not sure if that makes sense!) I hadn’t thought of that potentially being a problem when I created this video, so I apologize that this technique didn’t work out for you very well. I hope you will give it a try again sometime testing out maybe some different paper or paints. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching though, I truly appreciate the support! 🥰
It’s a great question. 😊 I haven’t erased the lines, just lightened them up a little. (I probably should have said something about it, but because I have demonstrated the process in other videos I didn’t think to do it this time.) I draw them dark so they’re easy for you as viewers to see, but because watercolor paints are often very transparent I do lighten them so they are not as visible with my finished artwork. I use what’s called a kneaded eraser, here’s a link to check it out, amzn.to/3puuLDa And if you’d like to see how I use it, I demonstrate it a little bit in this leaf painting tutorial. 😊 ruclips.net/video/MCLuac0Tg9E/видео.htmlsi=suBu1Q0tgf_2BIHf (Go to about the 2:20 mark) Thank you for watching, I wish you the best of success in your watercolor painting! 💕

As far as shadow colors, I am aware they are often not black, I had an extensive coarse on shadows at college, but because this was not a realistic or botanical piece I chose to do it this way because it created the effect and look I wanted, which is the joy of creating artwork…really anything is possible in our own little art worlds! 🥰 Shadow colors are derived from and are affected by what color the light source is as well as the color of the object the shadow is sitting on and the reflections of objects around…..they all play a significant part which is why shadows are not always the same color for everything every time.
Hi Liesl, quick question. I was wondering if you erase the lines you draw before you start painting.
I use what’s called a kneaded eraser, here’s a link to check it out, amzn.to/3puuLDa
And if you’d like to see how I use it, I demonstrate it a little bit in this leaf painting tutorial. 😊 ruclips.net/video/MCLuac0Tg9E/видео.htmlsi=suBu1Q0tgf_2BIHf

Oooooh, if you like Payne’s Gray, you need to watch this tutorial that I did a couple of years ago where the entire painting was created using only Payne’s Gray! 😁 ruclips.net/video/OYWVQD4oBlo/видео.htmlsi=BrzYmvXOKSEd0k2q
Which paper is best for water color
Some of that depends on a persons preference. But my favorite brand to use is Arches cold press 100% cotton. I hope this helps!
