Elaine Paige was 33 when she first played Grizabella, Betty Buckley was 35. I don't think Lea Salonga was too young, she would have been 39 here. Grizabella may be old, but most actresses who play her aren't old at all.
86am I think the reason why they do that is because it's easier for a 38 year old woman to belt out Memory 8 shows a week than it is for a 65 year old woman to belt out Memory 8 shows a week. I'm not saying a 65 year old woman couldn't do that it's just that our voices change as we age just as our bodies change when we age and we're not always able to belt out the way we used to to. Then again Elaine Paige played Grizabella again at 51 and still sounded as amazing as ever!
It's not abt her looks. It's abt her voice. She has a very bright youthful voice. If you close your eyes, you'll hear a young princess instead of an older lady mourning for the lost days. This role needs someone with more dept and grounding. It's not abt the age, more like the range of voice. An alto would be perfect. Lea is very high pitched.
truly, originals will always be the best and the renditions and versions where just second placing the great original. However, in the rendition made by Lea Salonga, the truth is, she doesn't even made appoint to taking it to its current pedestal but rather taking it to a new and higher heights of superb.
Where does she get that voice! It's soo rude of her to get all the singing talent! :)) I love you Lea! You're the best musical performer ever.. You're effortless! :D
Midnight, not a sound from the pavement. Has the moon lost her memory? She is smiling alone. In the lamp light the whithered leaves collect at my feet, and the wind, begins to moan. Memory, all alone in the moonlight. I can dream of the old days, life was beautiful then. I remember, the time I knew what happiness was. Let the memory live again. Every street lamp seems to beat, a fatalistic warning. Someone mutters and a street lamp smutters, and soon it will be morning. Daylight, I must wait for the sun rise, I must think of a new life, and I mustn't give in. When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too, And a new day will begin. Burnt out ends of smoky days, the stale cold smell of morning. A street lamp dies, another night is over, another day is dawning. Touch me, its so easy to leave me All alone with the memory, of my days in the sun. If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is. Look, a new day has begun.
It's undeniable that Lea sings this song brilliantly and definitely did an exceptional job. But for me, Elaine Paige will always be my favourite. When Lea sings it, it is amazing and I love listening to it, but when I hear Elaine Paige sing this song, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes and give me tingles because I love it so much. Elaine also puts much more emotion into the song than Lea does. I'm not smashing Lea's version, because it is gorgeous, but she doesn't put as much emotion as Elaine does into the song, and emotion is highly important throughout song. Again, not smashing Lea, but she sounds and looks too young for the part of Grizabella. Even as seen in her costume, you can see that Grizabella is supposed to be a worn down, old cat who was once beautiful (hence the name of 'Glamour Cat') and is basically now an outcast longing to be loved and accepted. I think that Elaine Paige was better suited for the role because of the maturity of her voice, plus she fitted into the more aged look of Grizabella because she is older.
@lasaboteuse Dude, she's a cat. She doesn't need to be wrinkly or anything! I see your point, I just disagree, haha. I dunno, maybe I just find it hard to EVER pick a fault when it comes to Lea.
I don't hate you for this comment. I love Lea Solonga in most everything she does; but, she seems utterly, board-to-death with this part. I also love Elaine Paige, she has a maturity that I feel you need for this part [unless, of-course, it is a high school production]. IMHO ;-)
@awkwardforu- I agree, I love Lea Salonga but definitely Paige's version is so much better. She seem to sang it a little too fast, does not give me time to soak in the emotion. I still LOVE YOU LEA!! lol...shes still better than the ones come out today that is for sure. =)
Lea is not the best the producers can get for the role of Grizzabella. But for the sake of marketing it to Filipino audience, she has to be included in the play. As simple as that.
fans will probably hate me for this but here goes... i kinda like paige's voice better for this role. lea's voice here sounds so clean and perfect. and it sounds a little young. i think paige's voice has a little more grit in it that captures the fallen glamour cat's character better. i kinda wish lea sort of wish lea brought more of her rendition of fantine for this role. just my two cents.
She actually broke her leg during one of her performances as Grizzabella, but finished the show anyway. This woman is amazing and a true Broadway legend!
Lea, of course is a goddess of theater, but her voice seemed too young for the role. It's very bright and youthful. Very princess-y. They should've casted someone w/ more grounding.
Lea Salonga is world class, but I think she's a little young for the role. It's not her fault, it's just that she's too youthful (in both face and voice). It's like having someone Marius' age play Valjean-miscasting.
Lea has an unbelievable voice which everyone loves but I also believe she is not suited for the role of Grizabella. She's way too young. Maybe in 20 years time, but not right now. She looks like a baby in costume and she acted like it too. And her crystal clear and magical voice is too youthful and strong for Grizabella. The character of Grizabella the glamour cat is supposed to be a very old, suffering, scruffy feline. Once beautiful, now just a worn-out has-been and an outcast.
I think tye character requires a mature vocal, Lea though she is amazing, her voice here is too youthful which i think not suitable for a rile like this one.
I dislike the video not because of Leah Salonga but because of people keep using their 🎥 camera 📸 during the Play can’t you understand how distracting and annoying this is?? Real life performance is something you shouldn’t film and distribute or share it to others or social media’s platforms. It’s not only disrespectful and rude but you must understand this is a business too people pay real money 💰 to watch it live! And the whole cast and backstage members deserves that money. You doing this is like stealing from the Cast and to the non-stage Crews. So please... please stop it! let the management of the show release their own video online.
I agree. When I saw Elaine’s rendition, I felt the emotion in her eyes. I dont know it affects me. With Lea, it’s perfect pitch but it’s too good. She didn’t act. Let’s admit it, she’s good but she didn’t have it all.
...no doubt, the cutest Grizabella ever. ;-)
AdiQ0502 I agree she looks adorable
lea was injured when performing but the show must go on what a professional
You cannot make her ugly
absolutely
Grizabella cannot ever be ugly as well...
hahahah ikr
Baby face lang talaga siya. She is very suited for the role. Asians just don't seem to get old. 💓
Elaine Paige was 33 when she first played Grizabella, Betty Buckley was 35. I don't think Lea Salonga was too young, she would have been 39 here. Grizabella may be old, but most actresses who play her aren't old at all.
Lea is a baby face. So beautiful like her voice.

a LEGEND with pure talent
I am a big fan of Lea since I was 5 years old. I had to say her voice never age but grizabella is an old cat.
Lea Salonga is the best! In everything she do!!! OMG!
actually it's coz lea is tooooooo beautiful! the make-up artist can't handle her beauty... hahaha! :))
she's performing while with a tripped ankle, so professional.
Best singer, My favourite singer ever:)
I can't wait to see Salonga as Elphaba for Wicked Manila ;D
Beautiful!!!! :) She's definitely the best!
She looks soooo young!
she's absolutely amazing!
Awww thank you for sharing this! She's an amazing singer!
wow!!! Exceptional. The best jud!
Such a Cutie 😍
She got the gorgeous voice ever!
Lea Salonga is the best singer ever!!!!!!!!!! I wish to play as Grizabella. :D
love it thanks for posting
I wish they had a run of this show in Singapore. I wont miss it. I love you Lea!!
She makes it so easy to nail that kind of song. Viva La Lea!
i saw her in Manila in august........i simply LOVED it........
the fastest heartbeat ever.......:))
Jennifer Hudson brought me here after watching the newest Cats 2019 trailer
Betty Buckley will always be THE Grizabella...many have come after her, but none will perform it like she did.
I LoVe LEAH SALONGA!
I always love to hear that song
Joanna Ampil’s portrayal is still the best for me. Both are good, Filipino pride!
She is wonderful !
omygosh!! goosebumps!! 😍😍
OUR QUEEN LEA IS IMMORTAL
ohhh...I love her so much.
so true!! the best!
the perfect rendition makes me cry
truly, originals will always be the best and the renditions and versions where just second placing the great original. However, in the rendition made by Lea Salonga, the truth is, she doesn't even made appoint to taking it to its current pedestal but rather taking it to a new and higher heights of superb.
Better that Streisand and Paige! Whew! Holy Mother eeeeffff! You're one hell of a performer, Lea!
Where does she get that voice! It's soo rude of her to get all the singing talent! :)) I love you Lea! You're the best musical performer ever.. You're effortless! :D

TOTALY agree with that....

Why didn't I watched this show? If only I knew that Lea would sing this
She can literally play any broadway role😭
she's so beautiful even turning her a grumby cat is hard!
maybe that's what the director wants her to do considering she's one of Broadway's Elite group.
she doesnt belt ^^ but still i love her
A singer with no air of breathing
@lasaboteuse
Dude, she's a cat. She doesn't need to be wrinkly or anything!
I see your point, I just disagree, haha.

Awww! Why so short? 😅
@Lonlyboysh You shouldn't feel bad. The whole CATS show is not around Grizabella. In fact, if you want to see Lea, you will only see her a few times!
Sa Solaire to? How were you able to take a video. Buti di ka nahuli. huhu. You're an expert! 🤓
Does look a little young, but excellent performance. She sounds quite a lot like Elaine Paige.
Her voice sounds amazing... But too youthful for the character
What cannot Lea do.
Elaine Paige is the best Grizabella for me. Her version is just perfect, both in terms of musicality and character
Czesar Joshua Obligado no one is asking for your opinion hahaha lol
Look it's a Salty Lea fan
Czesar Joshua Obligado you are correct. Elaine paige best ever. Lea doesnt cut it
Betty Buckley sang it well, too. Check out her 1983 Tony performance. Stumbled upon it here on YT and was just blown away.
@awkwardforu- I agree, I love Lea Salonga but definitely Paige's version is so much better. She seem to sang it a little too fast, does not give me time to soak in the emotion. I still LOVE YOU LEA!! lol...shes still better than the ones come out today that is for sure. =)
@FF82Detect Totally Agree!!!! LOL!
Lea is not the best the producers can get for the role of Grizzabella. But for the sake of marketing it to Filipino audience, she has to be included in the play. As simple as that.
is she doing it?
@giannagurlify Elaine Paige had the natural I don't want to be rude but a weathered look.
better than jennifer hudson in the movie
QUARANTINE???
@FF82Detect .haha. lmao at that.
Her make up looks more similar to Betty Buckley's ...
God, Lea is million light years better than Jennifer Hudson.
i kinda agree Grizabella should sound older.
I think elaine is more fit for the character. Lea sounds young and refreshing. Not that there's something wrong about that.
fans will probably hate me for this but here goes...
i kinda like paige's voice better for this role. lea's voice here sounds so clean and perfect. and it sounds a little young. i think paige's voice has a little more grit in it that captures the fallen glamour cat's character better. i kinda wish lea sort of wish lea brought more of her rendition of fantine for this role.
just my two cents.
djm1072 I love Lea from way back, but I have to agree that her vocal clarity and almost perfect technique can be both a blessing and a curse.
i've heard that when she was doing "the cats" she is sick thats why she cant perform well :(
Yeah I agree..Ms Lea Is injured that time That' why she can't perform well but the show must go on
yeah she had a sprain here
She actually broke her leg during one of her performances as Grizzabella, but finished the show anyway. This woman is amazing and a true Broadway legend!
Excuses
@@fleekdasheek9176 you can browse for you to find out...
Lea, of course is a goddess of theater, but her voice seemed too young for the role. It's very bright and youthful. Very princess-y. They should've casted someone w/ more grounding.
can't decide if Ms Paige's or Leah's version is better. but if push comes to shoves, Leah all the way.
I don't want to sound mean towards Lea... but she is VERY talented! no doubt about that, but this role isn't for her.
I also think it's really not for her
Holy Shit This freaks me out!!!! Me scared of the costumes and make up =0
Lea Salonga is world class, but I think she's a little young for the role. It's not her fault, it's just that she's too youthful (in both face and voice). It's like having someone Marius' age play Valjean-miscasting.
hmmm.. not quite sure .. I agree this is not her best perofrmance.. did she sing it in a low key? :(
Nope that is the right key-this is the end of Act I not the finale version.
Its because she sprained her foot at the stage
it sounded like that because she had a sprain ankle while she sang
Lea has an unbelievable voice which everyone loves but I also believe she is not suited for the role of Grizabella. She's way too young. Maybe in 20 years time, but not right now. She was 39 that time.

Newtt Isaac You do know this video is from a media call right?
Perfect singing but bland acting. Blinking and looking around does not convey emotion.
yOU DON'T SAY
She's Lea Fucking Salonga!
That’s what the character Grizabella does. The character required not much moving bruh
I agree. When I saw Elaine’s rendition, I felt the emotion in her eyes. I dont know it affects me. With Lea, it’s perfect pitch but it’s too good. She didn’t act. Let’s admit it, she’s good but she didn’t have it all.
Thats how the cats act
Poor acting
Fail. Doesnt come close to elaine paige
