BONNIE RAITT DOES THE ORIGINAL I LOVE TEDDY
The idea for the song came to Reid (Mike Reid the songwriter) while reading an article about a man arrested for getting drunk and shooting at his girlfriend's car. The judge asked him if he had learned anything, to which he replied, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."
Raitt (Bonnie Raitt who 1st recorded it) recorded the vocal in just one take in the studio, later saying that it was so sad a song that she could not recapture the emotion: "We'd try to do it again and I just said, 'You know, this ain't going to happen.'"
Now he is famous. This was before he blew up. Incredible voice and skill.

With all due respect to Teddy Swims, Bonnie Raitt's original remains unsurpassed. Because it's not just about the vocals, it's about the whole production, the all round stellar musicianship, and not the least Bruce Hornsby's exquisite piano playing.

It’s from her live album CD/DVD “Road Tested” recorded in 1995 taken from a series of concerts in Portland OR & Oakland CA. And yes, it’s truly a wonderful version exceeding her studio version. To be fair, Adele also did a pretty decent cover.

Bonnie Raitt does the original.. in 1991. Try and find a LIVE performance of it.. She often had the fabulous Bruce Hornsby on Piano.,... he is also an amazing singer an pianist... with several big hits.

Don't get me wrong, Teddy's version is fantastic. But there is nothing like the original with Bonnie Rait. Her live performance of it at the Grammys is magical, plus Bruce Hornsby playing piano for it. OMG.
