  • Newark Airport (EWR) is one of three airports that service New York City. It has several transportation options to get into Manhattan. These are taking the Newark AirTrain and NJTransit train, the Newark Airport Express Bus, the NJ Bus and PATH train, and a taxi or rideshare (Uber and Lyft). In this video we are going to discuss how to take these options, how to pay, how to ride, and other things worth considering when getting from Newark Airport to Manhattan.

Hey Thea - Another sensational video. On previous trips to NYC I've always avoided flying into Newark but your video fills me with a bit more confidence. The bus and Path option seem quite easy given its so cheap. It's been 4 years now since my last NYC trip - I'll certainly follow your suggestion when I hopefully travel to the USA again in 2023. So, when's your next trip to us down under here in Australia :)

NJ Bus + PATH to midtown is the most painful experience. The bus comes once every 20 minutes and you have to transfer to a different PATH. Plus the bus and PATH are both super slow. It takes 80-100 mins for me in my experience. Plus at rush hour the PATH is full so you have to stand the whole way.

I loved this video, but I do think if you’re staying in Lower Manhattan it’s worth it taking NJT to Newark Penn to transfer to the PATH. Yes, it’s more expensive than the bus, but I think it’s an easier transfer than the bus. Obviously if you’re staying in midtown it’s better just to ride NJT the full way, but I like NJT + PATH for getting to Lower Manhattan

    • @UrbanCaffeine

I'm sitting right now at the Newark train station and got confused with the schedule on the displays. For those looking for the same answer, the AMT and the NJCL are NOT the same! They both go to Penn Station but the ticket we get is for NJCL. Hope that helps someone. Also, next time I'll take the bus! That is a great tip I didn't know. Thanks, Thea!

Thanks for the video, very helpful indeed. I usually fly into JFK or LGA, but this time had to opt for EWR (after a long time not flying there)... I noticed that CoachUSA has a last bus out (from EWR to NYC) leaving at 10:45pm so for anyone flying late-ish, if miss that bus, you'd have to wait for the next one which is in the morning at 5:30am. So keep in mind that ExpressBus is not a great option if your flight lands at 9p or later since it could take a long while to get out of EWR... Just remember that landing time is when you plane's wheels have touched ground, not when your plane got to its arrival gate. Also consider that once you've arrived to the gate, you still have to deplane, the you need to pick up your luggage (if you travel with checked bags), then you have to clear customs for passport check, and that's why YMMV very wildly hence why I commented that (very optimistically perhaps) you could make it if your flight landed at or before 9p. Safe travels everyone! :)

Hi there. I'm not sure on the 107 but I think it only stops once a day on weekdays at the actual EWR terminals around 11 or 11:15 am. So it's not as reliable. And I think you would have to pay for 8 or 9 zones (about $10). Again, I'm not 100% sure. As for getting from gate to bus stop... Newark is not super huge. If you don't have luggage to claim maybe 10-15 minutes. That's just a guess.

Arriving and going to your destination would be no probs since you're not missing any flights, it's just when you're to fly back and the bus is not on the scheduled times

Does it make sense to just stay on the NJ side (say Pavonia Newport area) when touring Manhattan for a couple of days? I mean the Pavonia station is not very far from either the 33rd st or the WTC stations. I know hotels in Manhattan are so expensive.

    • @UrbanCaffeine
      @UrbanCaffeine  Год назад

You'd have to do the math and consider the convenience. You will have to take the PATH into Manhattan, so that's at least another $5.50 per person per day on top of your subway ride. And if there's a time you want to take a cab, there might be a toll for crossing state lines depending on the route the cab or Uber takes. But if the hotel is really affordable, it might be worth it.

If you take PATH there's a good chance you miss your flight (something something Miles in Transit)

Which option would you recommend for a family of four? Two adults and two kids

Hi there. If your kids are young, I would just taking a Uber for convenience. If your kids are older, depending on the time of day, an Uber could cost just as much as 4 people on the train. If you want to take public transit, it will depend on where you want to get off at. The NJ transit train will take you to Penn Station, the PATH will take you to World Trade Center, and the Express Bus will take you to different parts of Midtown. So you might want to check the location of your hotel or destination. Hope this helps!

Uber fares are NOT locked in, despite what they say. I took an Uber from NY Penn Sta. to a hotel in FiDi, and the fare was $20 more than the upfront quote, because the driver took the long way around. And he dropped me off a block away from the hotel, because it was on a one-way street and he came in from the wrong direction. I complained in the Uber app, but they refunded only $10. And there is absolutely no way to talk to a real person at Uber about a fare issue.

Oh man! What bad customer service. Sorry that happened to you. 😟 It's been a long time since anyone has mentioned a rideshare charging a lot more than their estimated price. Yeah, you're right their prices are not technically locked in but majority of the time it's pretty accurate or only off by a few cents.

Short video suggestion: where do you need to be sat in a plane (left or right) to have the best views of NYC before/while landing and depending of one of the 3 airports. 😉

Thanks! I haven't thought of that. I usually sit in the aisle to get to the bathroom easily. 😅

@@UrbanCaffeine I’ve read that the best is to be sat on the left side while landing at night at EWR.

@@AaaaAaaa-zg3gt I'll keep that in mind if I ever fly into EWR. Thanks!
