I grew up in Florida. I moved to Grand Rapids in 1993, when I was 20, and fell in love with the local music scene. One of my friends played your album, "i've suffered a head injury." That was the first time hearing 'The Freshman.' I was fortunate enough to see you play a couple of times at The Intersection, while it was still in Eastown. I was very happy for the band when you got picked up by RCA. Friends of mine from Florida started talking about you, and I felt proud to tell them my "I knew them when" story. I live in Muskegon now and I listen to your show on WLAV.
Never, in my 51 years of life did I think I would be getting guitar lessons from the people who wrote and recorded awesome songs!!! This is a great tune. Thank you for the lesson and thank you for the song!!!!
It's like a little gift for a stranger and I much appreciate it. As a foreign exchange student who danced to this song in a turnabout dance in the Chicago metropolitan area, I thank you from the heart.
I'm really glad you did this man. This has been one of my absolute favorite songs since I was 7 years old. I had no idea what it meant obviously, but my sister used to drive me to school and it was in the mix of CDs she'd pop in and I'd always request it. Every year that passes, this song seems to become that much more real and powerful for me. You have an incredible voice and now it appears you're an incredible teacher, too. Keep being an inspiration. And thanks for helping so many of us who've lived through hard times simply have an outlet to process our emotions. 🤜🤛
Between the ages of 12 and 22, you retain the most information from things that created an emotional response. This song is one of them. The nostalgia I feel when hearing this song along with so many others from this time makes me sad. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way. This is such a depressing and powerful song and when you first heard it while in high school, it became something that you’ll never forget. I’m in my 30’s now and just heard this song again recently for the first time since my high school years. I remembered every single lyric. THAT’S the power of music!
A young boy I met played it for the same reason. He was in and out of Foster programs and made a big impact on my life at the time. That's why I come back to listen.
Same here! Just a song that hits feels. All these years later I still freaking love it. Now I'm learning guitar and ready to play it. It's cool he did this tutorial himself. Awesome to learn from the OG. After watching this video, it's weird because I kind of feel like I've met him now.
This was one of my late older sister's favorite songs. This and live's lightening crashes. I felt like such a cool kid getting to listen to the older kid music and riding around with her. Lots of memories
This song pulled me through some rough years of my high school life in the 90's. It hit me really hard back then, and I still listen to it now, at 43 years old. When I play it, I remember that everything terrible back then came to pass, and I know that everything tough today will also pass. Thank you.
My "high school sweetheart" just recently left me. So while sitting here alone in the big house I came across this song a few weeks ago. It makes me feel crazy nostalgic about everything I've had and didn't have. Ever since I found it it's been stuck in my mind. So today I decided to learn it on guitar and I found this video! Thank you for making a perfect song, it's literally perfect. The sweet sad tone, the lyrics, the guitar riffs, your kickass voice. You should be real proud of yourself.. I am. Thank you!
During the coronavirus quarantine I decided to learn some guitar. I've been practising some basic chords for a while but I've always wanted to play my the most favourite song since high school - The Freshmen. Now I'm trying to find some easy tutorial and i find... THIS! A video from a guy who actually wrote it! What an honor! Many thanks for this!
Thank you for putting this together. I still belt out, "When I was young I knew everything." Those lyrics are timeless. Really appreciate your humbleness in the video.
One of my most favorite songs of all time! I met you around 20 years ago. My sister interviewed you and you were so polite and nice. Unexpected pure gentleman.
Well this was pretty freakin' cool. Also, there's something very humbling about you reiterating how you're self-taught. It's inspiring and motivating. (I'm currently learning the piano) and it makes me feel that I'm less of a musical fraud.
Don't ever feel like a fraud. Music is music. Do what you do, and don't pay attention to the negative thoughts (or people). That's what I've learned and life is a blessing for it.
I saw the Verve Pipe in Pelham, NY on 9/18/21. I was lucky enough to have back stage passes. The band totally kicked ass first and foremost. I met Brian after the show, he was the coolest most down to earth person, rockstar or not. It was great meeting him. I’m 38 and the Freshman was a major part of my childhood. Great song, great guy. The band rocked.
First time I heard this song I thought, "Man, I want to learn how to sing like that." It's such a powerful, dynamic performance. The powerful consonances, crisp vowels, and there are a few parts that absolutely arrested me. Like the "Thinks about her now and how he never really wept" part, when you kind of almost yell out "Thinks." I'm not entirely sure what you're doing, but the vowel kind of sounds like it goes from more open to less open as the note inflects, and at the top of it (the transition from the k and s in "thinks" to the "about her now"), it almost sounds like a nose-flaring snarl, as if the pressure raises to the nasal area and soft pallet. I know, I know, that's a ridiculous take, but whatever it is, it just slaps the listener in the face with a massive wall of emotion. And it's the little parts like that, contrasted with the soft, mournful sounding parts, that that absolutely roped me in. And of course, the best part of all: the very last "I cannot remember what made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise" part. Man. I love it. Absolutely love it. Such an eruption of emotion. I could listen to this song 24/7. Okay, if you haven't noticed, this is probably my favorite song. It's just quite frankly a masterpiece.
This randomly popped up in my recommendations. Great to see a lesson from the original artist and you seem like such a genuine and nice guy. Thanks for the video!
The power behind these lyrics provides a sense of understanding, sadness and solace. What is crazy is this song for me never ages, feels as if it was released yesterday. Excellent job Brian & Verve Pipe and thank you for the tutorial! Our son, who is autistic, loves it as well!
Man I want to bring this music back. I’ve been writing 90s pop/alternative/ rock for a while . This is the best time of my life for music being 36 . Thanks to you guys and others from that era! You guys are why I started playing .
I had a weird dream last night that I was listening to this song in the car while being chased by the police. I literally had not listened to this song in years so idk how on earth I just randomly remembered it in a dream. I always loved the vibe this song has. The second I woke up I grabbed by guitar and watched your video. Even though you probably have be told a million times, thank you for making this masterpiece
This song can gently coax my soul back to life by thrusting me back to a time when life was simple, exciting, and full of wonder!! This is my song of a life time!! Thank You!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
you're a saint brian. incredible song, incredible humility that you're self taught and still made music this moving / impactful. thanks for the inspiration.
I have this weird thing where I associate almost every song I've ever heard (if it meant something to me) with a memory of the first time I ever heard it. For this song, it was during a sleepover with by best friend at the time Matthew's place. I was 8. The song was playing in the living room of his mom's 2nd floor apartment. It was our first time hanging out in a while because our moms either had a small falling out or we were too far away for a visit. We played "In the house of the rising son" on a cheap electronic keyboard that day. I both love and hate these weird memories sometimes because I know I can never replicate most of them.
I have loved this song ever since it was first released back in the 90s. This is easily one of my all time favorite songs. This song hits me in the feels every single time, without fail. Thx Brian for bringing us a truly great song.
It's really appreciative. I'm also a self taught guitarist and it keeps me get going after knowing that a famous frontman as you is also self taught. And,The Freshmen is an excellent song to tune on nowadays also.
Always one of my favorite songs. I was in a crappy bar band and we played this. With a full band it's lots of fun because this song builds so well-starts off clean and ends pretty heavy and dirty. Love to play this. Thanks for the tutorial.
When I was playing golf at Gull Lake this song came up, and I learned your inspiration for it and that you were from Michigan! Very cool, and a great, heartfelt song. Thank you for the lesson and the gift of music to the world!
I appreciate your comment Zachary! I actually wrote much of the song when I lived on Gull Lake (north side I believe, by the boat ramp.) Great times there!
Man, this song brings back so many memories! My brother and I, had very...very different tastes in music but this one song, right here, we shared our love for together. I graduated high school in '97 and left for Basic Training two weeks later and this is the song that brought my brother and myself closer together before I left for basic. It's a beautiful, timeless classic!
I've loved this song for years, so thank you so much for showing us how to play it. There's no flashiness, or wild technique going on here - your genius is doing something fairly simple and making it sound wonderful.
Can’t believe it has so little views. This is one of those songs where when you hear it, it takes you right back to the 90’s. Absolutely love this song man! Cheers, thanks so much for posting this.
Thank you very much for this. Beautiful to learn it from you directly after so many years ... I LOVE how you describe your chordprogression!!! Just like I do , when I record my song ideas at night on my voice recorder, everything in relation to the chords we learned from Hotel California and Yesterday and then counting fingers and frets up and down from there 😄😁🎸
Thank you for sharing this immortal song to us, the 90's was such a beautiful decade cause it sprung what for me are some of the best music to be heard! And the freshmen definitely belong to the top of my list!!! God bless! And again, thanks man!
Villians was a very memorable album to me in the 90s when i was in highschool...Now that i have 2 daughters they have been heavily immersed in great music and we listened to "Myself" on the way to school today.
You're a life saviour, my dad got me into this kind of music. All of those karoake nights and parties influenced my taste in the genre even though I'm only 22, it had a profound impact on me. Thx for writing the chords to this simple yet powerful evoking song, I liked and subscribed! :)
dude! thanks, great song. can't believe I've never thought to cover this, definitely one of the best songs from that era. glad to see you're still active
Your music got me through my teenage years 🖤 I’m self taught guitarist as well and this was so helpful. I consider you one of the greatest songwriters, you definitely need to get yourself back out there.
Love from India. You are one of the best song writers on the planet. It's a pity lyrics seem to not matter in a lot of music anymore. But we have got you Brian! We still got you. Lots of love to all the verve pipe members past/present.
Just wanted to say thank you, but on two levels. Thanks for the perfect tutorial on your song... but thank you more for letting us know it's cool by you to play it. I never feel too comfortable playing songs by artists that are still alive to potentially be upset. This video is a green light for me, and I will proudly and emotionally play your song in my 90's nostalgia set. -from a kid from Michigan who was a freshman when you dropped this. It came into my head out of nowhere the other day, high fidelity. I always take that as the muse nudging me towards learning something. Hope you are well.
Thank you so much! I think it’s great and impressive when the original artist takes the time out to teach their own song. I see you guys are still touring and I will be in for 4 tickets when it’s safe.
Hi Brian i see you replied to every comment. That is a super cool. Its nice to see a creator, artist, over all busy person take the time to interact with everyone.
Thank you so much Brian. This song has been with me through all the good and difficult times from a pre-teen, to my teenage years and now into adulthood. Amazing how such a simple and honest songs meaning evolve with you throughout life. Now as an adult, wanting to mellow out on my playing who else do i find teaching me how to play this wonderful song but you. Thank you for all the magic Brian, we love you.
Awesome! One of my favorite bands of all time. I love all of your work Brian! I swear, you’ve been such a huge inspiration to my own music. Love you man!
Man the thing I dig the most.... you're so real with this. " it's an E but I call it a D cause it is " and " whatever that note is ". It's like you're one of us. Just a guy playing on his bed, not knowing the theory or the verbiage, just playing what sounds and feels good. Man that's so refreshing to see.
I remember not long after this song became popular, I heard an interview on the radio with Brian. I fully expected a typical front man personality and was stunned by how down to earth and, frankly, normal he came across. Thank you for this. I’m a drummer but I still enjoyed seeing how you relate the song to an audience. And as a drummer, I feel like this is one of the most well arranged songs I’ve heard. Every part is perfect including the drums.
Unreal how few viewers this channel has. You’re a legend, Brian! This song is one of the best and most enduring songs from the era. Anytime I play it in a coffee shop or bar, it quiets the room.
Hey everyone this guy is a genuine dude. I covered this song years back on instagram & he seen it & sent me a cool dm that really made my day. Some people want me to cover it now so here I am looking for the chords & vuala I found the original writer of this awesome song that ive heard since a kid, & still enjoy it just as much as the first time I heard the song. I have it in a spotify playlist I run regularly. 90s music for life✌️
Thank you so much for posting this, Brian! I've always loved this song and love to sing it. I've wanted to learn how to play it on the guitar for a really long time and it makes it that much more special learning it directly from you! Thanks so much for the tutorial and the song!
this is so cool. I heard this today on my Pandora on a 90's alt rock channel I haven't listened to in awhile. the song itself is so evocative, starts slow and mellow and really builds to a classic punchy 90's rock song. it always takes me back to a pretty crazy time and place in life. I mean I remember where and the girl I was with at the time and this song was getting a lot of airplay. we're cruising down the highway in the Rogue Valley and I can see Mt Shasta in the distance and everything. wonder how she's doing. anyway I look up on YT tonight to see how to play it and I remember looking it up years ago and it seemed hard to play but leave it to you Brian to make it simple thank God for capos lol. and thank you for this great great song.
Great lesson there, Brian. I finally learnt to play Mileage tonight the way you play it after seeing you up at the 10th and 12th frets in a live video on RUclips. I’ve been playing it lower down the neck with a partial capo for a while. Mileage has gotta be one of the best songs ever written. I heard it on internet radio here in Denmark about 15 years ago and fell out of my chair, then rushed to find out where I could buy Resurrection. I was a fan immediately. Liked, subscribed, commented. Have a good tour!
I appreciate that! Yes, Mileage is pretty simple once you get the hang of it. I like making up those 'lazy' chords where you don't have to change finger positions all that much, only change to different frets. Thanks for your comment!
This song carried me through pretty heavy times (somewhat close to what the lyrics I think are about, admittedly). Can't help being a total fool, but i'm trying. You've honestly inspired me to rethink my decisions and grow as a person. I can't be thankful enough. I really hope there will be more lessons. Please keep this train going and I definitely will grow as a guitarist as well ;)
Awesome! Welcome to world of guitar playing. Your fingers will hurt, notes will sound buzzy, but don't give up - You'll get there sooner than you think!
What a beautiful and moving song, learning this at the mo and to learn from the man himself, toooo much. Does bring back great memories, thank you Brian for your time teaching 🙏
Thank you for taking the time to share this, it's great to see you! And thank you for sharing this music all of those years ago...it has gotten me through many tough times in life...and for that I will always be grateful...some songs become a part of you.
Brother this is one of the coolest things ever. Don't see many so called "guitar gods" showing people how to do their stuff. Meantime this song outsold most of their entire careers. Love it, thank you. PS this song always gets me. It is absolutely fantastic. Thanks again.
I discovered this song when I was a kid on a CD labeled Best Alternative Volume 7, along with Rammstein Faith No More, Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins.... I was like 6 or 7 then and coming from listening to 80ss Metal and Ex-Yu rock this discovery was huge for me. Its been in my personal top 10 ever since. The vibe just gets me. Now I've learned to play it from the OG himself! Thanks Brian!
This was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar but the vocals are what captivated me about this song. I hope to be able to see you all live in concert one day!
Awesome lesson Brian, This was and is still one of my all time favorite songs to play along to on the my guitar. I love the beautiful clean guitar tone on this one. You rock! Thanks -Greg
So cool to see the artist doing a lesson on their song. In fact I’ve only run into a few other. Randy Bachman (The Guess Who) teaching “Undun” is worth checking out as is Louis Nelson teaching his solo for Lionel Richie’s song Hello.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. It really puts life, choices, memories and time into perspective. Especially as the years roll by.
I appreciate that JS!

I used to listen to the radio for hours to catch a full version where the dj didn’t talk thru the intro or cut off the end. Loved this song!
Thank you for putting this together.
I still belt out, "When I was young I knew everything." Those lyrics are timeless.
Really appreciate your humbleness in the video.

Thanks James!
Thanks for doing this for us, Brian. Awesome stuff! It's great when the actual composer is willing to help, especially us noobies!
Thanks Andrew!
dude! thanks, great song. can't believe I've never thought to cover this, definitely one of the best songs from that era. glad to see you're still active
Thanks Logan!
Hello to India! I appreciate your kind words. Thank you - hope to get there at some point. Love!
Thanks Scott! See you on the road eventually.
Hi Brian i see you replied to every comment. That is a super cool. Its nice to see a creator, artist, over all busy person take the time to interact with everyone.
I try to reply to everyone, though some get lost in the shuffle. Thanks for pointing that out Michael. Rock on!
@@thebrianvanderarkchannel2408 lol thanks for the reply dude. from one guitar junkee to another rock on dude!
Thanks Richard - glad you can appreciate that! Trying to keep it real.
I appreciate that David! Thanks for watching.
It's good to know I've been playing it correctly all these years. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for teaching the song, Brian! I loved this song the first time I heard it. I am going to play it on my guitar.
I remember first hearing an early version on WIDR, and thinking, “Goddam, this is a hit!” So happy it was. Great job, Brian.
This song is timeless and and iconic! As a small time songwriter, I very much appreciate it!
One of my all time favorite songs, that I still listen to... all the time. All these memories are captured in it
Thank you!
Unreal how few viewers this channel has. You’re a legend, Brian!
This song is one of the best and most enduring songs from the era.
Anytime I play it in a coffee shop or bar, it quiets the room.
I really appreciate your comment - and the fact that you play my tune. Thank you!
One of my all time favorite songs. Thank You
Hey everyone this guy is a genuine dude.
Thank YOU Aaron - hope it works for you!
this is so cool.
Please keep this train going and I definitely will grow as a guitarist as well ;)
Thank you for the kind words, and I'm happy that the song has had a positive impact on your life!
Awesome! One of my all time faves. Thanks for sharing .
Thanks Shano!
One of most beautiful songs ever written. Thank you.
Thank you Josh!
Thanks man! This song still belongs to my very favorite ones and one I love to play on my guitar over and over again.
You bet - I HAVE to play it over and over again lol. Have fun with it, and thanks for the comment!
Just picked up a yamaha acoustic guitar yesterday, one day I'll get to this level. Loved this song growing up!!!
Awesome! Welcome to world of guitar playing. Your fingers will hurt, notes will sound buzzy, but don't give up - You'll get there sooner than you think!
@@thebrianvanderarkchannel2408 Thank you man, I can't wait!!!
I always love this song. Trying to learn how to play it now so it's great to get the details straight from the man. 🤙
What a beautiful and moving song, learning this at the mo and to learn from the man himself, toooo much. Does bring back great memories, thank you Brian for your time teaching 🙏
Absolutely!
I can’t even begin to tell you what this song means to me. It’s so amazing. Thank you!!
Thank you for taking the time to share this, it's great to see you! And thank you for sharing this music all of those years ago...it has gotten me through many tough times in life...and for that I will always be grateful...some songs become a part of you.
I appreciate that! I'm happy to know the music means something to you. Rock on!
Awesome that you would take the time to make this video, Brian. Reaching for the guitar now 😉. Thank you!
I hope it works out for you!
Wow, thanks for sharing! I’ve always wanted to learn this and what better tutor than the man himself. Thanks again…great lesson!
Brother this is one of the coolest things ever. Don't see many so called "guitar gods" showing people how to do their stuff. Meantime this song outsold most of their entire careers. Love it, thank you.
PS this song always gets me. It is absolutely fantastic. Thanks again.
Thanks for saying that! I appreciate it.
Hey thanks for this great comment! Sorry it took so long to respond. Rock on!
I've always love this song. Thank you for sharing. You look great!!!!
This was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar but the vocals are what captivated me about this song. I hope to be able to see you all live in concert one day!
I appreciate that! We are going back on the road in May - East Coast, then we'll see if things open back up everywhere else.
2020 and this song still brings a tear or two, after all this time. Thank you for this.
Thanks Nathan!
Awesome lesson Brian, This was and is still one of my all time favorite songs to play along to on the my guitar. I love the beautiful clean guitar tone on this one. You rock! Thanks -Greg
Thanks Greg!

@@Mr27Fit Great job dude!
The Brian Vander Ark Channel It really means so much coming from you, Thank you 🙂
You the MAN!!! Loved this song in college and it is SOOOO COOL to learn it from the source! Wish I'd seen you guys in concert.
Thanks Christian!
So cool to see the artist doing a lesson on their song. In fact I’ve only run into a few other. Randy Bachman (The Guess Who) teaching “Undun” is worth checking out as is Louis Nelson teaching his solo for Lionel Richie’s song Hello.
This song is absolutely timeless
I appreciate that!
Great song! Thank you for taking the time to show us the song. This will definitely be going in the repertoire
I appreciate that! Thanks for playing it. Rock on!
That's so generous of you brother! Thank you!
My all time favorite song ❤️ during my highschool days
