Haha the snow completely threw me! I have so much admiration for how you stick at a task, wish I had an ounce of your tenacity! Awesome job and shout out for Jo for allowing you to take over the kitchen table 😅
Hahaha yes he filmed that back in March when we had all the snow. It was a good snow day project 👍 to be fair, when he works on the kitchen table, it clears all our other crap off of it 😂
@@joandtim Hi Jo/Tim, wasn't sure whether I should drop this on the leather channel but I just had a thought for a project... I assume you have some kind of captains log book (I don't know if or what you need) but I am sure you could make an awesome leather case for it. Just been commissioned (sounds way too fancy) to make a pilots log book and thought of you and this project. I am also aware you probably have waaaaay plenty of projects in the pipeline.
I have an Etap 30, 1990. It’s a mission to work through that cockpit door! Sailing Britaly has a very good video on the sail drive removal and replacement as you will not be able to put it back the way you took it out, worth viewing unless you have already refitted it! My only leak when I got the boat was through the roller furling fitting so just rebedded it with butyl tape.
Cheers have checked out the video very useful, thanks. Will be reinstalling in a few days. When you say you won't be able to fit it the same way it came out do you mean in 2 pieces?
Just seen your comment on the other video. I take it you were referring to the same realization I had later in the video. Still appreciate your input, especially the Brittany video tip
I have not done this yet with my 30 but it seems to me and other videos of the actual task that the engine has to be shifted away so that the saildrive can be placed back in position and torqued down then the engine moved back to bring the drive shaft back to mate up and into the gearbox. Good job it only needs to be done every several years!
@@andrewgreen7833 not sure to be honest, it might be possible to do it without shifting the engine. You don't see it in my video but I had to remove the saildrive from the engine in one piece as it's not possible to get to the bolts that join the lower saildrive to the gearbox until it's detached from the engine. My hope is that between the size of the hole through the hull and the flex in the engine mounts it will be possible to do it without moving the engine but I will find out in a few days and report back.
Had to pause watching and go do some research as I'd assumed that a sail drive was a motor solely for raising and lowering the sails. Goes to show how much I know about boats (and engines/motors). Getting that thing out certainly looks like it was a job designed for someone about 18" tall with no skeleton but immense strength - bring out the giant slug! Never heard of the vinegar/cola mix for rust removal - might have to give that a try. Agree with @John Boyle on the attitude Tim and with DS on Jo allowing the use of the kitchen table - I half expected to hear some foot tapping in the background of that scene 🤣
Tim, you have inadvertently just made the best sail drive servicing tutorial on RUclips! I can't see anything else that touches this. Bloody good job with the refurb. Is it a Volvo penta sail drive? Could you tell us the sail drive model and type of engine too please?
Cheers bud appreciate it. The saildrive is a Volvo Penta KG120B (or SB). The engine is a 2002 Volvo Penta MD18. At least I am pretty sure, arrived back home from the boat last night and am kicking myself as was supposed to take a pic of the serial plate while I was up there and forgot.
Thanks for sharing this, but I'm definitely leaving any work on the saildrive on my Etap 28i to the marina workshop - it'll be worth every penny :)

Thanks for letting us know, I will make sure I find the video and send it to Tim and he is refitting it this week hopefully 👍🤞

Great Job ,your starting with the right attitude if it doesn’t look good it’s worth further investigation 👍

😂😂😂 to be fair, it means he has to tidy the kitchen up before and after so it's all good 👍
