  • In this episode of can you sharpen on it I attempt to sharpen a knife on a file. I would say I had semi successful results. The knife was able to cut things fine but wasn't very refined.
If you had a cheap knife you don't care about this could work for you. I cut some rope, bailing twine, a grass seed bag and some paper.
Some things to consider would be. The hardness of the knife. The harder the knife the less this method is viable. The cut of the file. The finer the cut the more refined of an edge you will get. The length of the file. The shorter it is the closer together the teeth are giving you a finer edge and less chance of it grabbing. I would recommend a six inch file in as sooth a cut as you can find.
Also it also seems to depend on the knife. For example this knife seemed to chip along some of the edge whilst another knife I did didn't have that problem. In saying that I didn't look very carefully at the knife before I started sharpening so they could have been chips that were already in there and I didn't take them out. But even if it did chip from the file a six inch file would be much better and I believe would avoid the chipping issue.

You should try drawfiling the edge! I would imagine it to leave a much finer surface

Interesting! Good to know you can get a working edge if you just have a file on hand and need an edge quickly. Thanks Scott!

I was surprised it cut everything so well considering that it wasn't shaving hair off my arm. But if you were sharpening a cheap knife like the kitchen one i demonstrated on. The one where heaps of steel came off really fast. It would ve a grwat way to reprofile the edge before using stones. If you wanted to avoid power tools. I often get asked if i can sharpen one like that and it is nearly 1mm behind the edge. Absurdly dull. This would make fast work of it before finishing on the stones.

Jepp!! Sounds like the blade is well hardened. Not razor but sharp to the max. Maybe a keyfile will get it a bit better. And of course it depends on the steel how sharp it will get with a file. Nice informative video. Thank you for sharing this Scott. Greetings to down under. 👍like as usual.

Thanks. I think i know the type of file you mean. I have seen some locksmiths files that were basically single cut 4inch long files. Like needle files but single cut. They would be great if i had some. I also think a 6inch single cut file would do much better than what i had here too. I just tried to use what I assumed is probably the most common type people have. Probably in a year or two i will revisit this topic if i am still doing videos (hoping to) with a follow up series on how to get the best edges off various things. But for now the series is just seing if you can sharpen on things.
Also the steel in the folding knife was kinda weird. It felt harder near the handle and then the belly of the knife was cutting easier. I wonder if it was a shonky Chinese heat treat lol. Either way i was happy to get an edge you could use off of the file.

    Hey 👋 Scott
Those files make some good knives too. The soft Victorian gets pretty sharp but wouldn’t hold the edge for very long. Let’s see how sharp they get.

I actually have a bunch of old files to turn into knives. Which I can't wait to get to. I like your file knives but haven't made my own out of one yet.

What would be the narrowest angle, (15 degrees?) to use on a 3-1/2 pound felling axe?

There are too many variables to say for sure. It depends on the hardness of the wood. What else you are going to use it on. I reccomend just trying something and seing how it goes. I put a micro bevel on the edge to strengthen it up. It means you can do lower angles. If you find the edge gets damaged then increase the angle. If it doesn't have damage and you are unhappy with the performance lower the angle. Just have a go and see how it goes.
