What Happened to Chris Davis? | Stat Stories

  • Chris Davis has had a couple of rough seasons. And I mean really rough. Like he hasn't been a valuable player since 2016. But how did this former home run leader sink so low?
In this video, I look at what Chris Davis has struggled with the most on the field (hint: it's strikeouts). I examine why he may be struggling and how he has attempted to adjust.

So I said that Davis's batting average against fastballs was good, but I meant to say that it was good in comparison to his overall batting average. In no world is a .195 average against fastballs good lol

As someone who watched the Orioles everyday during his peak, I feel like this video gives him alittle injustice to being slow and bad defensively. He might be slow compared to base stealers but he’s probably the fastest 1b out there and he hustles on every groundball and you can’t say that for many players let alone a 1b and he was a rock at 1st. Not to mention him filling in for manny and Markakis when they were injured in 2012 and 2014. He played very good in positions he wasn’t familiar with. And who could forget him getting the win in Boston? He’s a super nice dude and I hope he can somehow get a fresh start with another team and play good again.

The fact that CD is hitting less pull and going towards the middle.....
I guess that could be the avg speed of fastball going up every year.... I mean, he's not hitting anything non-fastball anyways, so let's just look at FB.
So, balls comes in faster, and bat catches it not as extended. Which means balls fly more to the middle and weaker.... Kind of explains all the decline of exit velocity and falling to the middle more.

  • @csgolf24
    @csgolf24 3 года назад +1

The 2 biggest impacts on CD’s decline have been MLB taking away his exception for his ADHD medication and the shift. His exception expired in 2015 and we’ve seen what’s happened. Defense’s have put the shift on him over 90% of the time since 2016 as well. It’s easy to say “well he should just adjust and hit the ball to the opposite field”. It’s not that simple. I’ve never liked the shift. I think it takes away from the integrity of the game. MLB is finally looking into it now and I think we may see it banned at all levels by 2023-2024. Looks like it may be implemented in MiLB by next year.
The last thing I want to say about CD is he is a great guy. He’s great to the fans and he and his wife do a lot for the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital in Baltimore. Even amid his struggles, he’s a class act.

To me, this just sounds like he realized his bat speed wasn't there anymore to catch up to velocity, so he was trying to just let more pitches go by and hope for more walks as a lot of more veteran players do, but his historically bad K rate poisoned that, as pitchers just threw strikes at him.
Just a thought with what I've heard with the reason other veteran players have a spike in walk rate late in their careers.

  • @redsballer1904

Adderall is the sole reason he could hit 53 HR's in 2013 and 47 HR's in 2015, and have an okay batting average those years. When the MLB told him he couldn't use adderall anymore while playing, his stats, unsurprisingly, took a dramatic shift downward. In other words, Chris Davis isn't that good and belongs in the minors. Unfortunately, the GM of the Orioles didn't see this and signed Davis to an outrageous contract. The Orioles have a bad habit of signing bad players that got lucky one season.

Team Dirt golf glove isn’t determined by defensive prowess as much as you think, yes being a good fielder helps, but look at the gold glove winners, they all tend to hit well too

Dominick Pizzelanti .281 in his gold glove year, after a huge hot streak and raising his BAA by 40 points, he also won a fielding bible award that year too. Which is the real Gold Glove imo, seeing as fielding bibles are giving to the best defensive player in their position there was also the shit show of the ‘99 Gold Glove at first base in the AL going to a guy that played 28 games at first base that year, but was a DH

excuse me.....he was a good firstbaseman, when he first came to the Orioles, he was hitting to all fields without effort, and with power, then he seemed to just try pulling all the time, and that was it

    I'm an Orioles fan.
Sure, Davis can hit HRs to all fields. However, he has nothing to show for hitting against the shift. Is he even capable of laying down a bunt?

@@robertj.przybylski3866 Lesson learned: when guys coming through the system like a Machado or Schoop lock them in first before throwing money around to someone like Davis. In today's terms, lock up Rutschman. Keep him an Oriole for long as possible.
