Mooch is awesome, so interesting and articulate. Seen many of his past interviews but you got this one locked in. Looking forward to the next episode ✌️
I'm a Mexican who was in the punk rock scene in the 90s. The straight edge kids were skin headed. They hated racists, drugs, and anything else they considered bad for your health.
I grew up in England as a greaser and we battled with the skinheads every week. Mooch is dead on about there being 2 factions of skins, those who were Neo Nazis and those who were in it for the music and fashion. I could listen to this guy talk all day long. He is obviously well educated and I will go out tomorrow and buy his book. Thanks Demons Row, always great interviews.
@DemonsRow Sharps are more common in Northern Cailfornia. Racist skins are mostly from southern Cailfornia. But later skins like Peni and other groups became affiliated with the AB. The racist ideology went on the back burner and racism was more about recruitment. They became more criminal and about making money. Lots of regular white dudes went to prison and became skinhead. They knew nothing about punk rock music or culture. It was about gang life. That's why some groups like Society of Aryan Skinheads and others went to war with the brand/Peni because they were about money not white supremacy.

That's the entire Nazi/white power M.O. in a nutshell. They have no culture of their own for anything so they infiltrate, steal, and leech from actual cultures. Even the swastika was stolen.
There was a group of skinheads in the SF Bay Area that were called the S.H.A.R.P. Skins that fought against racism. They had Black skinheads and Mexican Skins as well as Jewish Skins. It was pretty big back in the 80's. It was an abbreviation for Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice. Used to go see a bunch of punk bands in S.F. at a place they called " The Farm" by Army and Potrero St. It was wild!
Fuckin right! I was a member of Anti Racist Action from 91ist through to 97 and there were a bunch of Sharps in the crew! I'm from Toronto in Canada and in the early 90's we chased off all the nazi skinheads that were in town, we were active as fuuuuk! I remember going to Columbus Ohio for one of the big meet up for all the North American chapters, it was a site to be seen :D. Good bunch of people, sad to see what Antifa has done to the movement.

We had skin heads like this around where I grew up. They called themselves SHARP's which stood for Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice. There were a lot of different skin head factions around too, and it was during the time that punk had a resurgence in the mid 90's. Going to local shows and parties was always sketchy. SHARP's were the minority faction and there was a lot of violence in that scene.

None of them beefed. Ever. They partied together. I always thought it was in deference to the owner but maybe just a truce in place. Lot of fun. They all treated us with respect and it was returned.
