  • John Gielgud disliked making movies in his early career, preferring to act Shakespeare and other great roles on the stage. However, in his later life he often took small roles that amounted to cameo parts in such films as '11 Harrowhouse' where he plays the head of the Diamond Exchange in London. Here a disgruntled employee (James Mason) who knows he is dying of cancer, conceals himself in the vault overnight so to as to assist an American burglar (Charles Grodin) in stealing the entire stock of diamonds. In this scene (which also features Jack Watling, Peter Vaughan and Jack Watson) Gielgud discovers that all his diamonds are missing. (From a 20th Century Fox film made in 1974 and issued on a Shout Factory DVD: uploaded as a tribute to Sir John Gielgud with all due acknowledgements.)

Gielgud and Mason had a unique rapport not exploited by filmdom. The possibilities were endless, with each able to easily fit different roles.
Actually they would have made a good Holmes,( Gielgud), and Watson,(Mason).

      They actually did, only separately.
John Gielgud played Holmes on radio (archive.org) - alongside Ralph Richardson as Watson and Orson Welles as Prof. Moriarty.
James Mason played Watson on-screen, with Christopher Plummer as Holmes.

A beautifully acted "worm turns" scene, where Mason, who has suffered throughout the film under Gielgud's chilly rule, gets to defy his authoritarian boss. Very satisfying to see him screwing up Gielgud--because what does he have to lose? Two prime actors at their best!

This excellent 'it takes a thief' theme film should of been remade more recently, but i dont know any blonde actress that do comedy wit and intelligence with model type beauty,,,,,as well,,,,Possibly JLAW??? Plus the american actor,, that would be an easier choice since many nowadays could fill the Grodin role....
