Tesla Supercharger vs 3rd Party Fast Chargers (Electrify America, Charge Point, Ev Go)

  • I finally did it. I took 2 electric cars on a long road trip. One of them I charged only with Tesla superchargers and the other I charged with 3rd party charging stations... which happened to only be Electrify America due to the LACK of fast chargers on road trips.
Are these third party charging stations reliable when on a road trip?

Another great video Chris! You just demonstrated why all of these other automakers are deciding to jump ship and switch over to the Tesla NACS (North American Charging Standard) network. In other parts of the country, there are even less non-Tesla chargers available, which makes owning a non-Tesla EV very difficult if you plan to go long distance with it.
I think there will be growing pains at first. But with Tesla building and opening so many superchargers, it should be less of an issue over time. Especially if places like apartment complexes build level 2 chargers for their tenants so they have a place to reliably charge at home.

When is working is so easy to DC charge my Model 3, in addition I only pay $0.29 per KWH at electrify America vise $0.68 per KWH at Tesla. So here in Hawaii Electrify America is the way to go.

Their charging network is the #1 reason why I'd still pick a Tesla over all other EVs. I know they're allowing Ford and GM to charge at their stations now, but Electrify America is just so bad. Their chargers bug out A LOT, especially in the cold, and I plan on road-tripping more during the holiday season to save money when that kind of weather is around and plane tickets are stupid expensive.

The EA and EVgo stations are quite confusing at best. The high power stations that have dual CCS1 combo dispenser "hoses" is there for redundancy almost akin to a gas pump. You can use one or the other on that "pump", but not both.
There are some dual CCS1 combo or CCS1 combo/CHAdeMO stations that will dispense power on both connectors at the same time, but the one who is plugged in first has priority of the charging rate and the second one plugged in will get the remaining almost like the v2 Supercharger. However those type of stations are not very common in high traffic areas.
I just like the elegance of the Tesla Supercharger, just plug in and charge. All of the information you need to know is handled by your car including realtime pricing, stall availability, and if a stall is out of service. There's no clunky apps and no display screen for anyone to vandalize.

A Tesla Model S Plaid has a 100 kwh battery correct? So how is it possible to go to a supercharger, get charged for 40 kwh, and the battery level only increases from 10% to 35%? Shouldn't the battery have increased 40% instead of only 25%?

Excellent Video! I thought you were going dump all over EA and Charge Point. You points were very true and insightful. I own a Mercedes EQE. I was deciding between the EQE and the Tesla Model S (not Plaid). Mercedes has plug and charge at EA which works amazing 95% of the time, but the limited amount of chargers does dictate/restrict our road trips some (mostly taking away some scenic routes up the coast of Cali to Seattle). I have had no problems with EA chargers it just waiting in line or finding one on my routes. The range anxiety has currently stopped my wife from going to an EV. And she is not a Tesla fan.
