So happy you’re going to react to this song. John Waite had one of the most distinctive voices on the radio. He eventually has a huge solo hit with “Missing You,” and then joins up with Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain (both of Journey) to form Bad English, a great band that is best known for the power ballad “When I See You Smile,” but which also had rockers like “ Rocking Horse.” Jonathan Cain was actually in the Babys too, but that was actually after “Every Time I Think of You.” Another John Waite/Journey connection is that they both had songs on the hit soundtrack to the movie Vision Quest. While Journey offered up the stirring “Only the Young,” Waite provided a mid-tempo gritty tube called “Change.” The soundtrack also featured two Madonna songs (Gambler and Crazy for You) as well as tracks from Foreigner and Dio.

"Change" is, actually, a cover of the N.Y.C. band: Spider.
...Waite's version is, definitely, the better of the two, however.
-If you know '80s songwriters, you MAY recognize the name: Holly Knight.
She was a founding member of Spider (which, also, included: drummer. Anton Fig - who, later, became the drummer in The Most Dangerous Band In The World/CBS Orchestra [Paul Schaeffer's band on Letterman's shows], after Steve Jordan left.) and wrote "Change" and "Better Be Good To Me" (Both, originally recorded by: Spider), which became a huge hit for Tina Turner.
Holly also founded an electronic band called Device, after Spider.
They got some notice with a song called: "Hanging On A Heart Attack" (if you were a "club kid" in those days, you might remember it.)
...Holly, also, wrote (or co-wrote) "Love Is A Battlefield" which became a hit for Pat Benatar.
...she has a bunch of '80s hits.
Spider has some worthwhile tracks, besides Holly Knight's tracks.
"New Romance" is a cool one.
      "Burning Love"
      (later, also, covered by: Kix
and Lee Aaron - in case you know who those are (you, really, should!)-)
      ... 🤷

Funny story, I saw The Babys and they got booed off stage. This happened at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, 1980. They were the "middle" act, sandwiched between 38 Special and the headliners, Molly Hatchet, two southern rock bands. The crowd was not pleased with their style of rock and jeered heavily from the first note. After about 2 and a half songs, the band suddenly stopped and the singer proclaimed, "We'll come back when you all grow the f*ck up." They then walk off stage to the delight of the crowd. Never saw anything else like it!

    • @MattB-h3n
      @MattB-h3n 8 месяцев назад +1

There is absolutely no doubt that John Waite has had a long, very successful career with bands (The Babys & Bad English) and as a solo artist. However, passing up the chance to first record "Open Arms" is the musical version of the high school basketball coach that cut Michael Jordan from the school's varsity team. Now, for context, there is evidence that seems to indicate that Waite didn't think the song, which was so heavily arranged to be a ballad, fit the style for The Babys. In fact, when Jonathan Cain joined Journey and introduced the song to the band, it was only Steve Perry that pushed for them to record it (as other members were unsure about the band recording such a ballad). It was after the band began performing the song live in concerts and receiving the overwhelmingly positive reactions that the scales were tipped. As for Michael Jordan, the part of the legendary story about him being cut which is rarely, if ever, mentioned is that he was a sophomore (10th grade) and players in that grade almost always played on their junior varsity teams as freshman (9th grade) and sophomore years. Furthermore, Jordan was only 5'10" as a sophomore, 8 inches shorter then when he would go on later to arguably become the greatest basketball player of all time.

The Babys had a similar hit song to this called "Isn't It Time" with the female singers added in. Most of their songs that I've heard are rock bangers, though. One of my favorite Babys songs is called "Back On My Feet Again."

Wife Speaking..., The cool thing about this band is that the lead singer John Waite..had a huge hit in the seventies (didn't hear from him again until the mid eighties) with a hit song...(didn't hear from him again until very late 80's early 90's with a band called Bad English...I agree the generas do kinda swing back and forth in this song excellent observation..but, Hey Ty...Don't be dissing my hometown band Firehouse lol lol😉😉😉

Funny you me think that keyboard. Jonathan Cain was the keyboardist for the Baby's prior to replacing Gregg Rolie in 1980 as Journey's new keyboardist and fellow song writer.

Please react to the title cut of that album Head First. It rocks and they have a video for it where the singer dives on top of the piano.

I think the part of the song where you hear two voices is a woman (I don't know who), followed by John Waite. He had a very successful solo career after The Babys.

"Every Time I Think of You" augmented the vocal of Babys' frontman John Waite with prominent female vocals, with "Every Time I Think of You" featuring Myrna Matthews, Pat Henderson and Marti McCall, Their two other heavy radio play hits also had the female backing vocalists, "Back On My Feet Again" and "Isn't It Time." I'm shocked it didn't make your playlist. Based on your comments it seems you don't care for songs with different parts. This song didn't even have a key change. You're going to have trouble with Meat Loaf songs and even some Rush songs where the music isn't straight forward. Great video as always guys!

Yes this is poppy rock and light and easy to make fun of but at 6:50 in this video you guys see how good some of this song is and give it some respect. Bravo

Probably should have done Isn't It Time first, maybe with the video. I think John Waite deserves much respect as a singer and feel you were a little dismissive of the song. But to each their own, keep on bringing us great tunes and memories guys.

This hit the charts in a big way when it was released! And Isn't it Time. A band i was in in the 80's covered a song of their's called 15, 16,17. A great song, even if a bit naughty! I hope this made your play lists!

Music would be boring if it was all the same tempo and lacked dynamics. In fact, that;s why so much modern music is boring.
