UPS Boeing 747 Landing at Cologne Bonn Airport (Germany)

What does a plane spotter do when he's on an airport, waiting for a connecting flight? Yes, he grabs a camera, looks for a good location and tries to capture as many airplanes as he can. And that's exactly what I did when I was at Cologne Bonn airport (CGN/EDDK) on my way home from Scotland in June 2015. Fortunately a Boeing 747 freighter arrived during this time and sun was shining marvelously. So, the only thing standing in the way of a really nice video was the fact that I was inside the terminal building instead of at CGN's recommendable observation deck, which which is why I couldn't capture the sound of the planes, but I guess you just can't have it all ;) ... but in return there's music now.
The aircraft shown is N573UP, a Boeing 747-400SCD with "SCD" meaning "Side Cargo Door", telling us that this Jumbo Jet was built as a freighter rather than being converted to one from an airliner. It first flew in 2008 and has been in service with UPS (5X/UPS) ever since. The aircraft can be seen here landing at runway 32R at Cologne Bonn airport and taxiing to its parking position from there.

Ja, CGN lohnt sich auf jeden Fall! Architektonisch ist er TXL wohl recht ähnlich, Du solltest Dich dort also gleich zu Hause fühlen ;) und die Besucherterrasse dort ist ein Traum (finde ich jedenfalls).

+Aviatorspot Thanks a lot! I know what you mean, at my local airport (Leipzig/Halle, LEJ, EDDP) we don't see UPS at all, so capturing one of their aircraft is special for me and getting one of their 747s surely is a highlight.

Yes, of course. The B748 features a large number of improvements over the B744 and the crews certainly have to know about those. But because of the similarities they don't have to go through a completely new type rating. Instead they do a 'differences course', which takes a lot less time and therefore reduces cost.

+chrizzler100 Vielen Dank! Die Anflugrichtung kann man sich eben nicht aussuchen ;), aber da ich in diesem Fall nicht auf der Besucherterrasse am CGN war, sondern im Terminalgebäude, war es so besser, weil man von dort aus schlecht in den 14-Anflug sehen und filmen kann.
