Thank you so much. I needed this since I'm an 11 year old girl. At the moment, I'd like to be an artist/animator when I'm older. But, of course I can't go to art school. This video was so useful and I appreciate this!
Thank you so much for this video! I’m in the age of 14, and very happy that you made this video! I’ll definitely get a head start at art. Actually, I’ve already been drawing, but it could still work
When I was around 14 I refused to learn correctly. I was always drawing the same things over and over and never improving, and then wondering why I wasn't as good as other people my age. It wasn't until I was about 20 that I started taking my art journey seriously by watching tutorials and following along with them, gathering inspiration from other artists, looking at references pictures (important!!!), and getting critique for my work. Now at 22 years old, I've improved SO MUCH MORE in those 2 years than I ever did beforehand. Yuhaino ouo, keep pushing forward! If you stick to Lavendertowne's advice now at 14 years old, you will be INCREDIBLE when you turn 22! GOOD LUCK!
Amy Balmer thank you! I already do watch tutorials everyday, and gather styles from around to create my own. Referencing does help a lot, and I hope that you would continue to improve! I am already wanting to learn animation in college, so I am taking art seriously. I am happy to know that these actually work. Thanks again!
@@snoosh101 oh man i just got a whiplash. i was preparing a portfolio and allat however due to a lot of circumstances, i couldnt go to art college. sad ending :c i still draw from time to time and i have definitely improved but i do not have time at all :/ i actually turn 19 in like a week or two so youre close lol
I feel there are ways formal training can help you and ways in which you have to learn by yourself. I feel that art school isn't too friendly to beginners. You need to do some or most of the work yourself with little guidance. So I really can only recommend going to one if you know you really want to do it. But that's just my thoughts.
I thought this was gonna be a video telling me not to go to art school and I was so confused cause she's posted "pros and cons of art school" so I was like ??? But I was incorrect
As a young person who has been inspired to better my art because of this channel, and has been starting to consider it as a career option, thanks a lot.
Just saying if you want to improve your art a great way to do that is to watch speed paints on RUclips. It’s very helpful to see the sketching process of an artist and how it turns out in the end. (:
I'm really looking for the assignments next week, because my first day of highschool begins tomorrow and I didn't get into the only two art highschools in the country unfortunately. I know this will be mostly uni level art, but I'll make it work. Idk if any other kid that knows they wanna go into art feels it like I do, but I feel the pressure on me to learn and sketch and draw [not because I'm comparing myself to others or things like that] because I feel like a liar, saying I'm an artist, when I can't draw hands but I've got figures and poses down, and can't practice certain things cause they are too expensive rn, like digital art? I've got an Ipad, but that things sucks to try on, I've a feeling other people feel me on that one too. It's just that, when you go into art, and you _say_ that, people get a certain expectation of what your art should _already_ look like. Like you should already be the golden child in the land. It's putting a lot of stress on me, which is making me pick up a pencil less and less, which makes me feel even more stressed for not using my time. Any advice on that?
Instead of identifying yourself as an Artist or saying that you do Art, try saying that you draw sometimes (or paint or sketch or whatever,) even if you do it a lot. Separate what you do from your personal identity and the tribal associations that come with identifying as that thing. That change in mentality helped me, anyways.
My professors mostly just showed us videos. You basically teach yourself in college. It’s good your giving people the opportunity to teach themselves a skill. Who needs an art degree anyway when you can commission your art so readily and easy online.
I’m going to use this when I’m a bit older as at the time I’m more focused on other things even tho I’m a younger age and I want my career more known to my parents like my channel and how I want to animate thank you for making this video ill be sure to use it in some time And my dad has actually said he might get me a drawing tablet so I’m excited for that as I want to do better digital art than my work on my phone once again thank you for this video and also the other one you mentioned in the start Have a great day/night :D
I am only a hobbyist artist and don't want to pursuit career, but I'll definitely try those tips and "start a second degree" (I'm already in college) just for fun :D Also, I'm here for such a long time, and usually I get bored of channels, but yours is truly unique! Your empathy and soothing voice, your distinctive style which I absolutely ADORE (I even try to incorporate your eyes/pupils into my more cartoon drawings because they are so amazing) ... Every video is like Christmas present but without the fear that it will turn out be sweater or socks!
Thank you for being such a big inspiration to me! I have been watching you for about a year and if it weren't for you I would still be drawing shoulders the size of watermelons, thank you so much! I am forever grateful.
Thank you so much, your videos are the reason I'm thinking of going to art school and getting a job with my art. I still have a long way to go but I think you are making it so much easier and better.
Thanks so much for the video! Actually on a youtuber's channel on discord there's an "art critique" section where a lot of people share their art and want to get criticized, I of course always throw the full compliment sandwich and I know how to explain my points of view, we really do help each other improve a lot and just in general have fun! Since school for me finishes in December I actually hope to use all of these tips in my free time to make a small home art school for myself, I might offer it to some others on the server, but in general I'm really pumped for every video you put out! QwQ You're one of my top idols so just thank you for sharing this simple information! It really helps!
I just want to say that as an artist with low motivation, your videos always inspire me to actually /want/ to pick up a pencil and start drawing on the spot
If anyone is looking for some people to connect with for critiques, especially if you're interested in comics, entervoid.com has an awesome little community of artists who are all about helping each other improve! There are even a decent number of art students or working professionals who still frequent our Discord chat, so feel free to come by and check us out! (I go by Bobo on there, so feel free to say hi!)
Yeah this site is super helpful, I'm Desichan and been there for a year and have become sIGNIFICANTLY LESS HORRIBLE! ;w;b Its a really good place to learn
Woah, wassup Bobo! I just wanna say, Void is like, the best community I've ever joined. The Discord group is legit on par with online paid courses, in fact it's even better because you get proper feedback, and make actual artist friends!
As someone with anxiety disorder and can't go outside their home, THANK YOU!!! Since I got this problem, I always despised art school and wanted to learn on my own since I don't have the mental capacity to go! I was wondering how I could get the skills while working from home, and you come with this helpful little guide! It feels like Christmas! ( I still prefer Halloween tho)
Lavendertowne, I literally love you so much. I took art and design as my major when I went to university but the art courses sucked so I dropped out. Right now I'm in film school and am contemplating after I graduate to go to animation school. But because of everything I've learned from you and all the great resources I might not. I think art and animation schools are great but aren't the only option. For me, my mental illness and finances set me back a bit in this respect. I think maybe I'll do online courses or go to public workshops, like life drawing classes or stuff like that. I'm really happy you're making this series and I can't wait to continue learning and becoming a better artist and animator.
I’d love to go to art school. I just started my senior year in high school, but I feel like I’m in no position to apply for art school, for 2 big reasons. 1. I’ve always loved art, but I feel like I started taking it seriously too late, so while I don’t think of myself as bad, I know I’m probably not good enough to get into a good art school 2. I really don’t think I can even afford to get into a good art school. Especially since I live in New Jersey, and there’s not really any major art schools around me. And going out of state would make it even MORE expensive. I’m so glad you made this video. I really appreciate the amount of thought and love you put into all of these.
LavendarTowne, you are a huge inspiration to me! You have helped me through many difficult art problems and made me over a lot of art-blocks. I always draw, like all day everyday, it's what makes me happy and what I love to do. Your tutorials and advice makes it easier to become a better artist! Thank you for everything! ❤️💕
Lavendertowne:Talk to people about your project deadline! Me:BUT THATS THE PROBLEM when I tell someone I’m gonna do something I don’t do it and I stop it!
This is great! I don't have enough money to attend any art classes at the moment, and even though I was in 6 years worth of art classes (went to an art high school and then to an art college a year after I graduated), I stand by my belief that as an artist, I can always improve. In regards to taking notes, I agree that you learn and remember more by taking notes. I like to pull out my trusty notebook and pencil rather than using notes on the computer/phone, though. I just find that it helps me more.
I just got rejected for art school and I don't have a back-up plan yet, so this is very helpful! I'm not really sure what I'm going to do next year, but I'll definently keep this in mind.
Tbh I am super scared by the idea of art school. Like, I really would like to attend one but I am super super scared that by the time I'll have to start it I won't be good enough and I'll just fail and get left behind =c Hopefully I have still 3 years of high school so I have a lot of time to practice and get better. So thanks for your videos, they are always super helpful and inspiring!!
Commit yourself to sitting down every day for however much time you can spare (even an hour or two is good), and seriously devote yourself to improving. Don't just draw as you normally do, but struggle to learn and improve. Improve your linework, learn and practice colour theory, and composition, perspective and lighting, etc. Systematically study your weaknesses away. Hands look bad? Try as hard as you can to draw hands as accurately as possible from reference. Whether that means doing a hundred in a row, or five a day for a few weeks. Whatever. Then move on to the next thing. You can find info on how to do all of this using Google, or RUclips. Three years is a lot of time. People have gone from kiddy incompetence to nearly professional in three years of serious dedication. Even a fraction of that can make a huge difference. Remember though: don't settle, always try to improve, and always make sure to dedicate time to improving. If you want to draw for fun, or without it being a serious effort to improve your work, that's fine, but do that in addition to your serious studying, not instead of it.
The point of art school is improving your art, so if you learn how to improve your art in the three years you have, you'll do fine in art school! If you're concerned about the quality of your drawings, you could see about attending a Portfolio Day event where admissions officers from different schools will critique your portfolio. They all expect a decent amount of life studies and those are a great way to improve, so I'd recommend working on those :) Even if you decide to not go to art school (a lot could change in three years) they'll help you improve.
I feel like as a self taught artist all my life that I've been using criticism for a long time but that project idea could really help me focus my motivation and time management so I'm excited to try that!
The actual reason I love art is because my father is an artist of hobby and he inspires me and I want to follow his footsteps :) Great vid Lavender! ^-^
I'm literally having a crisis right now because I don't know if I want to be a computer scientist or a psychologist. While I do enjoy art, I've heard it's relatively hard to get a job in the art world and I don't work well on drawing under stress and that's like 90% of art school.
For the 2 of you who replied, I don't think I was clear enough. I don't want to go into the art field because drawing while under stress is not fun to me and would probably ruin the whole purpose of drawing to me. I mostly draw when I'm having a bad day because of stress or anxiety or something like that. All jobs are difficult and I am aware. I don't think psychology or computer science are any easier at all in fact they'd probably be harder to pursue, but they seem like fields that are more enjoyable to me.
lemon damn. I’m positive I wanna be an artist but I don’t know whether I wanna go to art school or study some science at university. I’d really wanna do both lmao
lemon Ok, it's good to know what kind of role each thing serves you the best. :) I'm still not very sure about it. So I guess I'll just try to get in different schools and see which I'm accepted in, and I guess I'll figure it out with time and experience. But before that, I want to get my comic going (in Liminka school of arts) and concentrate on that and enjoying my hobbies (scout leadership and horse riding). I don't know if art is the right career for me, but I like it and have a passion to do it, so I'll always do it one way or another. :)
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!! I do plan on going to Art School (for photography rather than drawing/ animation), but my mother wants me to get a bachelors in business so this will help SO MUCH in my decision making!!!!
This is such a wonderful thing to do for people! I hold such high respect for you as an artist and as a person and although I've never really considered going to art school I am super intrigued by all of this and am excited to see part 2!!
As somebody still in the "required" years of schooling this will be really helpful to improve my skills, and get used to how art school works and feels. 👍👍
Reenagi 〜 Working online is definitely an option. I know a Finnish comic artist that works for Webtoon in America through internet, while living in Finland, and he's not the only one. The comic scene in Finland is small and online comic platforms are growing, so it's really becoming something to consider if you're a comic artist. It should work for any company to which art is submitted digitally - you don't have to live there, you just have to find the job. If you're a freelancer, you need a web portfolio and connections. Social media is handy. Internet is amazing.

I actually went to Art School before. I left at least after a month because it wasn’t teaching me anything. I just decided to teach myself, and here I am 6 years later better than I was when I was in art school. It’s better to teach yourself to draw than go to art school. I learned that myself
@@dinoreina If you end up downloading amino and looking for a great community to learn from, and get critiques, etc, I'd recommend ArtAcademy! ( aminoapps.com/c/ArtAcademyAmino ) Honestly, if this is what you're looking for it's absolutely amazing, I've been in it for a while and am absolutely blessed by both the people and the lessons
As for the critique thing, I'm currently on a discord server with at least 25,000 artists on it, and we submit art to channels and let people we don't know critique our work. The best part is there are different channels for different types of art, so you wouldn't have someone who does specifically abstract or crafts critiquing the semi-realism you did. It's a really great way to connect with other artists and share tips and things like that. I've learned a lot from that server.
Yeah I never really understood going to art school when there's literally a bunch of videos online helping you, aside from that art teachers are hella objective, they teach you the style they like.
I'm going to art school in the spring but have been craving that learning experience since I was a junior in high school. I get to go to college for free because my Dad is a war veteran. I've have been taking time off from school to focus on my mental health and try and figure out who I am without school. Considering I have terrible depression and anxiety (now under control with medication) I wanted to get a head start on teaching myself different things so I'm not in the dark when I go to school. Thank you for the video this has been amazingly helpful!
I dont think you need someone your age, just someone who will take your age into consideration. I would think its even better to have someone with more experience critiquing your art since they will know how to get better because they already did, you know? Someone who's the same level of art as you can only do so much.
I'm older than 2 of these people, I'm 12 lol Make sure to actually take the critique, my 10 year old friend constantly deflects critism because "she's younger than me" or "it's her style". Everybody lies to her that she's good but she's far from that. Ok, she's good for her age but she's definitely not good in the general sense. I'm not that good either but I at least accept critism (unless the critism is dumb. Once I was told that I can't draw black freckles because freckles aren't black. Like, who cares about that, it doesn't affect the quality at all).
thanks so much lavender! as soon as you said I should try to figure out what exactly I want to do, I looked up art professions and spent an hour reading. Now I think I want to be an art teacher! if anyone reading this comment has any experience in the career please tell me!!! run me through a basic day. what's it like? anything I should look out for? thanks!!! (by the way, I thinking about teaching middle school)
I actually plan to study to get a career in character design since thats alwsys been a passion of mine. My question is (because i want a degree) would i go for a degree in animation or is there a specific degree for character deisgn?

This is very relatable and I hate it
ikr! 😭
I thought the title was a warning ah
Me too
Haha same I'm glad she changed it
wait what was the title before?
it used to be "don't go to art school" but she changed it to be a little more in tune with what she was discussing in the video.
DONT GO TO ART SCHOOL!
This hits different when you're in quarantine
i Learn Drawing while im bored since 5 and now ive made...
*A perfect stickman*

0o0 I- I still can't- h-how????
Thank you so much. I needed this since I'm an 11 year old girl. At the moment, I'd like to be an artist/animator when I'm older. But, of course I can't go to art school. This video was so useful and I appreciate this!
Same here
Alexia Baiwood sure man! You got a Discord?
@@ravenj2484 Yep! I'm really surprised you responded so quickly-
Alexia Baiwood haha I got the notification and it isn’t too late in my time zone. Anyway my Discord name is RavenJ24 and the number thing is #8558
Alexia Baiwood Yeah I accepted it
Thank you so much for this video! I’m in the age of 14, and very happy that you made this video! I’ll definitely get a head start at art. Actually, I’ve already been drawing, but it could still work
Yuhaino ouo Being intentional about learning something always works. :)
Holy crap you're 19 now!
@@snoosh101 oh man i just got a whiplash.
i was preparing a portfolio and allat however due to a lot of circumstances, i couldnt go to art college. sad ending :c
i still draw from time to time and i have definitely improved but i do not have time at all :/ i actually turn 19 in like a week or two so youre close lol
*"This new art school substitute proposed by LavenderTowne is changing students' lives everywhere, art schools HATE her"*
FIND OUT WHY!
I feel there are ways formal training can help you and ways in which you have to learn by yourself. I feel that art school isn't too friendly to beginners. You need to do some or most of the work yourself with little guidance. So I really can only recommend going to one if you know you really want to do it. But that's just my thoughts.
Ultimately, you have to learn everything yourself. Teachers can only guide you what to learn, or correct you if you go funny along the way.

Perfect for the current...
*situation*
I really like the ideas here for self imposing a structured learning environment. Simple to understand but difficult have the self discipline to do.
I'm not in art school, but I will have an "arts" degree, so I started a drawing class, and I'm so excited! Lol
Just saying if you want to improve your art a great way to do that is to watch speed paints on RUclips. It’s very helpful to see the sketching process of an artist and how it turns out in the end. (:
This is actually how I started drawing lol
I used to watch a bunch of speedpaints and it's very helpful!
Thank you!
I have found artists like that in the Anime Art Amino. They are also really nice people.
I didn’t pick art for middle school, instead my young me had to just pick orchestra.
But I still want to become very good at art.
My professors mostly just showed us videos. You basically teach yourself in college. It’s good your giving people the opportunity to teach themselves a skill. Who needs an art degree anyway when you can commission your art so readily and easy online.
I’m going to use this when I’m a bit older as at the time I’m more focused on other things even tho I’m a younger age and I want my career more known to my parents like my channel and how I want to animate thank you for making this video ill be sure to use it in some time
And my dad has actually said he might get me a drawing tablet so I’m excited for that as I want to do better digital art than my work on my phone once again thank you for this video and also the other one you mentioned in the start
Have a great day/night :D
I am only a hobbyist artist and don't want to pursuit career, but I'll definitely try those tips and "start a second degree" (I'm already in college) just for fun :D
Also, I'm here for such a long time, and usually I get bored of channels, but yours is truly unique! Your empathy and soothing voice, your distinctive style which I absolutely ADORE (I even try to incorporate your eyes/pupils into my more cartoon drawings because they are so amazing) ... Every video is like Christmas present but without the fear that it will turn out be sweater or socks!
*This is really going to help right now*
Thank you for being such a big inspiration to me! I have been watching you for about a year and if it weren't for you I would still be drawing shoulders the size of watermelons, thank you so much! I am forever grateful.
Really like the last part were you were like a story time youtuber or something by those lines
Well...we're in quarantine so GREAT!
I'm very inspired by your art Lavender! Thank you for posting.
So, thank you. Your content is so great.
When ur literally in the middle of a conversation with ur dad about art school and the notification for this video pops up on ur phone 😅
1. I’ve always loved art, but I feel like I started taking it seriously too late, so while I don’t think of myself as bad, I know I’m probably not good enough to get into a good art school
2. I really don’t think I can even afford to get into a good art school. Especially since I live in New Jersey, and there’s not really any major art schools around me. And going out of state would make it even MORE expensive.
I’m so glad you made this video. I really appreciate the amount of thought and love you put into all of these.
LavenderTowne, you're like one of my top ten inspirations to draw. I love you're videos please keep up the good work!
Heyo lavender I JUS WANNA SAY THAT I LOVE ALL YOUR VIDS AND ALL YOUR ART!
You helped me develop a new art style!
Me: Quarantine is boring. Good thing I have this!
"Getting and giving critique."
*Hek*
I just got rejected for art school and I don't have a back-up plan yet, so this is very helpful! I'm not really sure what I'm going to do next year, but I'll definently keep this in mind.
Tbh I am super scared by the idea of art school. Like, I really would like to attend one but I am super super scared that by the time I'll have to start it I won't be good enough and I'll just fail and get left behind =c Hopefully I have still 3 years of high school so I have a lot of time to practice and get better.
So thanks for your videos, they are always super helpful and inspiring!!
T0MMY221 Trust me, you can get pretty good in just 3 years (or less) if you want to :D
Thank you all! =D
Thank you also for the advices, I'll follow them for sure!! ^^
I'm in art high school. Still, I'm pretty sure you'll improve a lot in 3 years.
thank you lavender towne
LavenderTowne: and if you’re n in a position to go to art school
Every Artist: *laughs in school is cancelled*
I feel like as a self taught artist all my life that I've been using criticism for a long time but that project idea could really help me focus my motivation and time management so I'm excited to try that!
1:15 lmaaaooo, both of my parents are from art schools and always diss my drawings 😂
The actual reason I love art is because my father is an artist of hobby and he inspires me and I want to follow his footsteps :)
Great vid Lavender! ^-^
I'm literally having a crisis right now because I don't know if I want to be a computer scientist or a psychologist. While I do enjoy art, I've heard it's relatively hard to get a job in the art world and I don't work well on drawing under stress and that's like 90% of art school.
lemon Art is as difficult as any job, just in a different way.
I highly doubt your difficulties with stress are going to go away if you enter a different field.
I'm still not very sure about it. :)
I don't think I've ever clicked a video so fast, this has been really helpful, thank you!
Wait-
Lavender Towne can see the future!

As somebody still in the "required" years of schooling this will be really helpful to improve my skills, and get used to how art school works and feels. 👍👍
Corona: let me introduce my self
this is so helpful i feel so much better about the prospect of learning more in art
Can you PLEASE make a video on the best art jobs (the problem is, i live in Saudi Arabia, so the options are limited)

I just started art-middle school and it's pretty fun so far. And I can see that it's going to be great
I actually went to Art School before.
I left at least after a month because it wasn’t teaching me anything.
I just decided to teach myself, and here I am 6 years later better than I was when I was in art school.
It’s better to teach yourself to draw than go to art school.
I learned that myself
Do you know any artists group where I could post my art and get critiques?
@@dinoreina You could download the amino app and join an art community.
@@hhaannaahh thank you Hannah!!!! ❤
You can't expect anything just from a month when they r trying you. You can't compare 1 month and 6 years. You missed so much things actually.
@@dinoreina If you end up downloading amino and looking for a great community to learn from, and get critiques, etc, I'd recommend ArtAcademy! ( aminoapps.com/c/ArtAcademyAmino )
Honestly, if this is what you're looking for it's absolutely amazing, I've been in it for a while and am absolutely blessed by both the people and the lessons
The small animatic at the end 😍😍😍
As for the critique thing, I'm currently on a discord server with at least 25,000 artists on it, and we submit art to channels and let people we don't know critique our work. The best part is there are different channels for different types of art, so you wouldn't have someone who does specifically abstract or crafts critiquing the semi-realism you did. It's a really great way to connect with other artists and share tips and things like that. I've learned a lot from that server.
can you give a link to that discord server?
Find other people and talk with them about your art and critic
Me, a bad at socializing introvert: god damn it-
I wish I could give this all the likes in the world...
It's actually pretty nice that you say what you really think about Skillshare, and you didn't really lie about it in your sponsored videos either.
i never really even needed art school to learn how to draw xd
Yeah I never really understood going to art school when there's literally a bunch of videos online helping you, aside from that art teachers are hella objective, they teach you the style they like.
Same I literally taught myself and gave myself critique throughout my whole life and here I am now
You go to art school to learn to draw something that isn't noodley looking humans and wonky animals
hey jawa its me :3
If you want to become a professional artist it’s good to have an art agree, because it will be easier to find a job
I swear to god every time i run into a problem, lavandere town's always there! You're videos are so convenient, thank you so much for your uploads
“Because you’re not in a place to go”
“Because you’re too young”
Ehmmm I’m too lazy to actually go :P
I'm going to art school in the spring but have been craving that learning experience since I was a junior in high school. I get to go to college for free because my Dad is a war veteran. I've have been taking time off from school to focus on my mental health and try and figure out who I am without school. Considering I have terrible depression and anxiety (now under control with medication) I wanted to get a head start on teaching myself different things so I'm not in the dark when I go to school. Thank you for the video this has been amazingly helpful!
Omg one time I was drawing bendy fan art in school and someone pointed it out and told the teacher and I got intrable
Why tho
Thank you SO MUCH, LavenderTowne! This was super helpful. I'm so happy you made this!
I would love to have my art critiqued but it is hard to find people my age :/
Me too, I'm 11
Emzz Q Same,because I'm 11
I'm 15 ;-;
I dont think you need someone your age, just someone who will take your age into consideration. I would think its even better to have someone with more experience critiquing your art since they will know how to get better because they already did, you know? Someone who's the same level of art as you can only do so much.
I'm older than 2 of these people, I'm 12 lol
Make sure to actually take the critique, my 10 year old friend constantly deflects critism because "she's younger than me" or "it's her style".
I loveee the little animation at the end sooooo cuteeee
Hiya! Please read this... do you have a PaigeeWorld account? If not, then someone is stealing your art and posting it on there, just trying to keep you safe:)
OH MY GOSH THE LITTLE UH ANIMATIC THING AT THE END WAS SO CUTE
